About

This project will develop a portal on the web for people to see into the daily lives of young people in Uganda, as pictured in their own art. This will be a continually evolving web-based art gallery, where you can see the art of the young people change and become more inspired, as they become exposed to more and more stimuli, whether by film, travel to new places or the events taking place currently in Uganda.

The idea has been born out of some sponsorship from Bayimba Foundation who offered money for these Imagine us Here kids to produce some art for their Arts Festival in Kampala this September. Jointly coordinated by Social Enterprise Africa and Kushinda (kushinda.org), the project provides opportunities for the children to learn practical art skills from leading Ugandan artists. Although these kids have only been learning how to paint for a few months, people have been queuing up to talk to them and buy their art and by backing these young people yourself, you will be able to do the same.

The web-site will be fully interactive, so you will be able to communicate directly with the artists, through posting, text chat or even video Skype chat, if you become one of our premium backers. Who knows, you could be the one to influence the development of a future great. Every artist will have their own page and their works will be dated, so you will be able to see their progression. You could even ask them to paint something specifically for you and it'll be shipped directly to you, wherever you are in the world!

These pictures will encapsulate the lives of these young people. You will sense the cramped conditions that they live in through their pictures. Sometimes they will picture the squalid environment, but also you will sense their hope, when they paint flowers or their inspirational visions for the future. Communicating their lives to others around the world is crucial, to demonstrate the talent that young Africans have in every field, but also that with investment, they can strive to support themselves and their fellows in these difficult places to live through their talent. Africa needs investment, not handouts.

By backing the project, you will provide the means to develop the Imagine us Here Portal, provide the artists with training, mentorship and art materials and allow them to set up a sustainable long-term window on their world.
