Fabled was started 4 years ago by me, Sam Rapley, I play saxophone and clarinet in the band and also write the music. The music we play aims to connect with people, share our experiences, allow the listener to escape the real world for a few minutes. It aims to blend the freedom of jazz with the melodic fluidity of folk and ebb and flow of classical music. Above all, it aims to tell stories.
Alongside me in the band are 4 of my closest friends who I've been making music with for a long time and who take Fabled's music to levels I couldn't conceive of on my own. The band is:
Sax / clarinet - Sam Rapley
Piano - Matt Robinson
Guitar - Alex Munk
Double Bass - Conor Chaplin
Drums - Will Glaser
The Album - 'Short Stories'
Following the release of our EP back in 2015, we have now recorded our DEBUT ALBUM and will be putting it out for all the world to hear in March 2018. The music on this album, as you may guess by the title, 'Short Stories' has been influenced greatly by literature, in particular stories by Ian McEwan, Roald Dahl and Arundhati Roy among others. These writers inspired me to create music in a different way, to find new ways to convey a story through sound and to immerse the listener in that world. This led me away from traditional jazz forms and sounds and opened up a more fluid, through composed way of writing, more akin to classical music, whilst all the while keeping the essence of jazz and folk music. The end result is something that, I hope, will speak to people and make others feel how I felt reading those stories.

So far, we have self funded the recording and mixing of the album, which involved 3 days at Fieldgate Studios in Wales, several days of overdubs, countless hours of mixing with the wonderful Alex Killpartrick and of course, paying the musicians in the band. So we've have come a long way and are incredibly proud of the result so far but to get us over the last few hurdles, we're enlisting the help of YOU, our trusty fans. We need to raise £4,000 to cover:
- Printing CDs
- Press & Publicity
In exchange for your support, we've come up with a load of things that we think you might like, ranging from simply pre-ordering the album to having a piece specially composed for you by me. We're also really excited that Romanian born, London based writer, Irina Nedelcu will be writing some actual short stories based on 2 or 3 of our pieces - I've worked with Irina on 2 short films over the years and she's an amazing writer! Any amount will be hugely appreciated and of course as pledgers, you will become part of the Fabled family, which means exclusive content, special offers and being the first to hear about upcoming shows.
If we manage to exceed our target, then that extra money will contribute to our UK tour, which we are currently planning for March / April 2018.
A huge thank you to all of you who have supported the project so far and for all of you who have managed to read this far! We hope to be seeing more of some of you and if you want to know more about the album, the band or about me, then feel free to visit www.samrapleymusic.co.uk or get in touch with me at firstname.lastname@example.org
Also, huge thanks to Andrew Lawson at Fieldgate Studios who filmed our Kickstarter video.
Risks and challenges
A project such as this inevitably comes with some risks and challenges. Plenty of challenges have been overcome already and I have no doubt that any challenges that we face in the future will be surmountable. The potential risks and challenges are:
Album release date - at current we are scheduling to release in March 2018, however this may be slightly delayed to April 2018. Because this project relies on so many different people doing various jobs, the challenge is trying to coordinate everything to be done at the right time. So far, this has all worked out and we are confident that the launch date won't have to be pushed back any further than April.
We might not raise enough money from this campaign - the rules at Kickstarter are that if we don't raise 100% of the £4,000 we're aiming for then we won't get a penny of it. However, we've got an amazing team on it and members of Fabled have successfully funded their own projects through Kickstarter so we know we can do it!
Labels - at current we are planning to self release our album, however we have recently been in talks with one or two labels. This won't affect the money that we need to put the album out but of course if anything changes with this, we will be completely transparent and let you know of any developments.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
