Loranga is a Raspberry Pi compatible board designed by La Fabrica Alegre to make it easier to set up an internet connected LoRa IoT network gateway, anywhere a cell phone signal is available. The LoRa technology enables long range, low power and low-cost communication between end nodes. Loranga works out of the box with the excellent open source gateway software from WAZIUP.
At La Fábrica Alegre we strive to democratize technology, and we can't do it without you. All software and hardware design files will be available for you, for free, on our Github page. Here you will find all the software needed, based on the WAZIUP gateway code, but also all the data sheets, technical specifications and specific Loranga scripts that will help you get going much faster. Watch the demo. Sending a data packet from a LoRa node to the gateway and onto the cloud to ultimately be displayed on a smartphone. In this demo we use the WAZIUP gateway code available at Congduc Pham's excellent LowCostLoRaGW github repository. This code library is by far the best way to get into everything LoRa and IoT. Loranga even has it's own scripts in there to help you set everything up.
You can add additional items or more Lorangas to your pledge level by simply choosing the item(s) you would like and then follow the instructions below to add to your pledge!
All add-ons require a base pledge to be at the $30 tier and above. Estimated delivery will be January 2018.
To add an add-on to your pledge, follow these steps:
- Press the 'Manage Your Pledge' Button above. If you have not pledged yet, it will say 'Back this Project'.
- Increase your pledge in the 'Pledge Amount' box by the total of the add-ons you want to add (including shipping).
- After the end of the Kickstarter campaign you will receive a survey that will ask you questions so that you can explain how you would like the add-on money assigned.
Get the antenna kit to avoid the hassle of sourcing them yourself. If you want to learn more about antennas, check out the WAZIUP antenna tutorial.
The antenna kit contains:
- One wire antenna for LoRa module, with uFL connector.
- One PCB antenna for 2G/3G module.
- Two uFL to SMA female pigtails to connect your favorite antennas.
Different regions of the world have slightly different license-free frequency bands dedicated to your data transmissions. Loranga can, therefore, be ordered with the HopeHR LoRa module tuned to the band corresponding to your region's regulations.
The most widely used frequencies/bands are:
- 433 MHz for Asia
- 860 MHz for India
- 868 MHz for Europe and Sub-Saharan Africa
- 915 MHz for North and South America
Using lower frequencies than the ISM bands at 2.4 or 5.8 GHz, LoRa enables better coverage for nodes in buildings.
Be sure to tell us as to which version you need, and during our final questionnaire we will make sure that the correct version is shipped to you.
Do I need the 2G or 3G version?
The 2G version is more affordable and works well for low data rate applications (500kbit/s). The 3G version is great for slightly higher throughput applications, promising at least 2Mbit/s.
But keep in mind that in some parts of the world, the 2G network is being completely retired, while in other areas, particularly in rural and developing regions it is the only network available. Make sure to get the version that will do the job for your region first and then taken into account data rates.

Risks and challenges
La Fabrica Alegre has been working in the R&D and DIY space since 2006 producing a wealth of complex hardware solutions, so we have experienced a good share of risks and challenges in the past.
We have completed development and have working prototypes in our hands making us ready for pre-production. When manufacturing, there are always concerns around the production and the logistic time-frame.
