In a nutshell:
My name is Meghan Rose and I'm a writer and musician based in Madison, Wisconsin. Darryl Neudorf is a Grammy-nominated producer (!!!) who has produced all of Neko Case's solo albums (!!!) and he is producing this album (!!!) at his studio, Operation Northwoods, in Orangeville, Ontario, just an hour north of Toronto.
Why it will be awesome:
My mission is to write and perform songs that are visceral, refreshing, catchy, and make you want to sing along in your car. In writing songs for this project my goal has been to do something different; to challenge myself and break some rules. After years of learning the ropes as a local musician, collaborating with others, writing, editing, recording demos, and honing my voice, I have a set of my own songs that I want to give the ol' "let's go make a record in the Canadian northwoods in the wintertime and go stir crazy" treatment. These are songs that don't quite fit with my other projects (my beloved bands) - it's definitely a very personal labor of love. I look forward to long days, long nights, long johns, inspiration and lots of soup and hot toddies in my quest, and I'd like you to be a part of it. Influences to the sound of the record (besides the inherent romanticism of 'Canada in November'): Fiona Apple, Liz Phair, Neko Case, Jenny Lewis, Courtney Love, Regina Spektor. So if you like any of these artists, I bet you *at least* $1 that you'll like my songs too (see reward #1...).
How it will be awesome:
The incomparable Emily Mills will be my drummer (as she will always be and has been for the past five years in various projects), and the talented and charming Jake Ripp-Dieter will be adding bass and guitar, and even adding some bowed upright bass (which means we are hauling one of the biggest instruments there is up to Canada. Woo!). Which, let me tell you, friends, if you haven't had the pleasure of melting into the crumbly dark chocolate sound of a bowed upright bass, you owe it to yourself and others. I'm also pumped to have Dan Myers (Lumi Photo) to take pictures of me and things and stuff in cool places, and for Kelly Maxwell to add her design magic to the cover art and inserts. Then, did I mention Darryl Neudorf was nominated for a Grammy?! Mind-blowing.
Much of the work is already done. I have 10 complete songs, each with demo recordings and Darryl's thumbs up. They have a life of their own now. The studio is the magic part and I'm excited to see how the songs will evolve. I'm proud of them not only as a musician, but also as a writer. I have shit to say. Roar.
Lastly, as an independent local artist who loves to collaborate with others, I'm excited to learn as much as I can from the experience of working with someone in the music industry who's really got it going on. I know I'll gain some great insights from working with Darryl and I hope that connection lasts and will help me produce quality work in all kinds of cool ways in the future with all kinds of cool people, including many of you.
For Darryl's creative direction and engineering, and for Emily and Jake's contribution, the studio time, equipment, mixing, mastering, and travel, it takes an investment. While I'm very fortunate to have some money saved up for something like this, I'm still not able to fund it on my own. Recording with a cool guy like Darryl takes some $ and although I'm *willing* to go into debt for this project, it's way cooler to involve you and give you cool prizes. Kickstarter is incredible and I've backed several projects through it, all with very positive results, and it's also a great way to connect with backers. I hope you find the rewards appealing and fun.
THANK YOU so much for being a part of this project!
Risks and challenges
I guess the van could break down. If that happens, we'll fix it.
Emily's flight may be delayed. If that happens, we'll wait for her.
If something happens to Darryl, we're just out of luck and I'll refund your money. Then I'd probably write a song about it and release the album myself.
If Jake forgets how to play bass, I will play it.
If there are bears, we will run.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
