About this project
Archive is a collection of adventure sites, NPCs, and events ripped right out of history and perfect for your campaign. It’s a 265-page book with 80 subjects. All have everything you need to make them come alive at your table: sights, smells, history, local color, and even plot hooks and ideas to help you adapt them to your campaign setting.
Need a villain? Throw your PCs against Ching Shih, the notorious pirate queen, presented with the tactics and schemes she used to wreak havoc across coastal China! Need a random encounter during travel? Recreate the 1861 encounter of the French corvette Alecton with a dying giant squid, and the social consequences that followed. Need an adventure site? Why not Fort Jefferson, complete with real historical secrets for your PCs to uncover?
Archive is the sequel to a book we successfully Kickstarted five years ago: The GM’s Real-World Reference. We were humbled by the overwhelmingly positive response to the first book, and we’re excited to create a sequel with all-new topics, higher production values, and a physical product. Just like the first book, Archive is designed to help you easily find the perfect plot, site, or NPC for tonight’s game, but it’s also fun to just crack open and read as a history book.
$10 – PDF Only. One PDF copy of Archive. The book is complete, so you’ll receive your PDF copy shortly after the Kickstarter campaign concludes.
$30 – Book + PDF. A physical copy of Archive. You also get a free PDF copy of Archive. You’ll get the book by December, and the PDF shortly after the Kickstarter campaign concludes. Note that shipping will be paid separately, after the Kickstarter is over.
$100 – Game Night + Book + PDF. Identical to ‘Book + PDF’, but we will run a single session of an RPG in the style of Archive for you and your friends on Roll20.net. Limit six players.
Need a memorable NPC? Choose from twenty historical figures ready to drop into your game. How about a Soviet POW turned Nazi war criminal hiding out in Connecticut? Or a Newfoundlander sea captain who skippered voyages of discovery into the frozen Arctic? Or even an internationally-wanted dictator who’s thumbed his nose at justice for years?
Sending your PCs into the wilderness? Archive has twenty real-world landscapes to inspire your backcountry adventures. Lose your party in a chilly rainforest full of mosses and ferns. Or a far-off galaxy with a mysterious ring-shaped void around its center. Or an abandoned World War One battlefield where unexploded munitions slumber beneath the poisoned soil.
Looking for an event in which to entangle your party? Archive has twenty historical events of all different scopes. Throw your PCs into a crazy financial scheme that bankrupted onion farmers and permanently shut down the Chicago onion futures market. Embroil them in the rise and fall of a free state of American Indians and runaway slaves on the wild frontier. Challenge them to survive a heinous shipwreck, where passengers and crew were set adrift and slaughtered each other in a seventeen-day bloodbath of paranoia and cannibalism.
What about manmade sites? Check out twenty total cities, towns, and buildings for your party to explore. Let your PCs explore a West African market where healers and vodouists peruse racks of animal skulls, horns, and talismans. Maroon them aboard a beached Philippine warship in contested tropical waters. Send them to an Afghan shrine where a single family protects a sacred relic from evil.
$8,300 – Free Book! All backers receive a free PDF copy of The GM’s Real-World Reference, the book to which Archive is a sequel. We’ll also take advantage of the opportunity to make some small tweaks to The GM’s Real-World Reference.
$12,000 – Free Book! All backers receive a free PDF copy of Look Where You’re Going: Prime Landscape Sites for Storytellers by Dr. Scott Rice-Snow. The book is a collection of sixteen geologically-interesting sites in North America and how to use them as settings for complex, engaging encounters in your campaign.
As stretch goals are unlocked, new ones will be revealed.
Archive is complete except for printing and shipping. The heavy lifting is done, but printing and shipping are the most expensive parts of the process. That’s what your support makes possible. We hope you’ll join us in this exciting journey. And thank you!
Risks and challenges
This is a low-risk project. The book's already laid out and ready to print, and we're working with a very reputable printer. We've also built several months of flex into the schedule to account for unexpected delays. Our previous Kickstarter delivered the core reward on schedule, and we are confident this one will as well.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
