We are Monica, Silvia and Anna: 3 Italian women & foodies who live in Bologna, London and Detroit. Despite the distance, our friendship has grown stronger thanks to food and being foodies, so a couple of years ago we founded our food blog. Our daily chats and our friendship are the inspiration for our food-blog Tortellini&CO.
Every day we speak of, write on, photograph and cook food. Every day we learn something new about our own food culture and, at the same time, we have the opportunity to discover different national cuisines. Powered by our pen-friend chats and tips and motivated by the goal of sharing our passion for food, has come also the idea of “Kitchen Notes”. We got the initial inspiration from Monica’s recipes notebook: after keeping it secret for years, she finally decided to share her recipes, magazine cut-outs and cooking tips. We loved the idea of Kitchen Notes being a notebook rather than a traditional cook-book, to make it closer to Monica’s one. Silvia wanted to make this a beautiful lifestyle piece and Anna decided to fill it with colourful illustrations. We aimed for something special and unique that represents the beauty of Italy but at the same time the things we discover and love everyday living abroad, in the cities we have chosen as our new home.
In a nutshell: Kitchen Notes is creative, genuine and cosy. Exactly as we are!
The book & the recipes:
Kitchen Notes recipes are accessible, versatile, easy to make and, often, farm-to-table recipes. Perfect both for the every-day and for the table feast! Our recipes are grouped in eight different sections based on occasions we love like breakfast, brunch, tea time, picnic, aperitivo, chic and cheap, feast table....and one central very special chapter: “Cooking with Nonna”, where you’ll find how to make, cook and serve genuine and original pasta fresca. Some of the recipes come from our own family traditions – from Emilia-Romagna (especially from Bologna!) and Veneto, two Italian regions with a unique cuisine. You can also find very classic Italian recipes, so widespread from the Alps to Sicily that we consider them a true national food heritage. Finally, we have chosen some recipes born under the sign of Tortellini&CO, our friendship and living abroad experience. Unconventional recipes we developed day by day, inspired from the seasonal and organic ingredients that we can find in US and UK and you can find pretty much everywhere but still in our fresh Italian cuisine style.
Over 40 illustrations and over 60 recipes! Some recipes you’ll find are:
focaccia with tomatoes, burrata and fresh basil - authentic ragu’ bolognese - strozzapreti with clams, zucchini and cherry confit - mortadella mousse - Granny’s ciambella - chocolate salami - our original tiramisu.
The illustrations and colouring pages:
Four amazing illustrators joined our all-women team and when they did we were super excited! We see every illustration as a unique piece, because we are so in love with the style of every drawing! And they all contribute to making the book a colorful piece of art.
We like to think that each of those illustration can be framed and hanged in our kitchens, our homes or offices. For this reason we created the collection of illustration cards, that can be purchased separately and can be used as recipe card as well as a picture to be framed. Some illustrations are in black and white and will become kids and grown ups favorite colouring entertainment! You will also find white pages for your notes, doodles and drawings.
Kitchen Notes and the illustrated recipe cards will be delivered in fall 2018, in perfect time for Christmas!
Paper and texture:
The cookbook and illustrated cards will be printed on a unique textured and elegant paper. This paper is just perfect both for a messy table or an elegant and tidy desk!
Why kickstarter and the goal:
We love our project and kickstarter is the ideal community to share it with people who’d love it as much as we do! Kickstarter and its community are not afraid of distances and so are our friendship and recipes-book!
26,000 UK pounds is an ambitious goal but it’s what will allow us to print the first 1,000 copies, cover the initial costs and ensure our recipes can spread all over the world!
Kitchen Notes is a project about friendship and respect: we put people first! That’s why we want to guarantee a fair pay to those who worked and will work so hard at the artistic production: our 4 amazing illustrators and our tireless video maker.
We would also like to print in a sustainable a green way, using high quality materials, thus the higher cost for copy of the first print.
HERE IS “KITCHEN NOTES”! THE PERFECT BOOK TO HAVE IN EVERY HOME, A WONDERFUL PRESENT FOR A FUTURE YOUNG CHEF OR AN AMAZING GIFT FOR THE FAVOURITE COOK IN YOUR LIFE!
Kitchen Notes is a project that has been near and dear to our hearts since we started it almost two years ago. It has been shared with talented women who contributed to make it come true. Our hearts burst with gratitude for our illustrators Elisa Martinelli, Alessandra Meli, Giorgia Roncati and Lida Ziruffo, our fantastic videomaker, Valentina Cafarotti, and for our dear friends, Martina Burolo and Federica Pecis, who are helping us spreading this Kickstarter campaign all over the web. A big thank you also to Gwen Calisch and Alicia Seidita for helping editing the English translation, to Amy Ragheb for the US shootings and to all our friends who participated in the shootings! We do have a few men we have to thank: Federico Landi, the most smiling and sweet videomaker buddy, and Roberto Carisi, both a tiramisu and kickstarter lover who introduced us to the crowdfunding world. And, last but not least, Andrea, Andrea and Guido, who made many Italian (made with love) coffees all those evenings we had to work long hours on our kitchen Notes project!
We’re also grateful for all of you who will support us in this amazing journey!
Risks and challenges
Any project has its risks, but luckily all the recipes and illustrations have already been completed and mostly what remains is the printing.
There are always possibilities of delays with printing, but we have a great partnership with our suppliers, that delivered the first pilot copies already, and can’t wait to print the final ones!
