What is Constancy: Roa?
Constancy: Roa is a 2d side-scrolling combo oriented platformer/shooter in development for PC, Linux and Mac. You control Roa as she fights against her other sisters and acquires specialized facsimiles of them called "databanks". Using these allows Roa to mimic her sisters in her own style, changing all of her stats, abilities, and gaining a new set of moves for each form. These new forms can be changed at will once acquired. In addition to this Roa will acquire several abilities as she begins to "awaken". Since she is a non-combat unit she is substantially weaker then her sisters, so strategy is required in many cases. This is not a button-masher friendly game. You will have many choices to confront a given situation but whether or not you'll be successful at it will depend on your skill and reaction. The AI for this game is inspired by recent Ninja Gaiden games, and especially the bosses will be highly elaborate and intelligent.
Images represent a work in progress and the final product may be somewhat different than seen here. The final game will also be using "dynamic lighting" which is why background shadows and shading are minimal right now, they would interfere with it. You'll be able to see more of this in less then a month.
Features and Modes Planned
- Databanks: When Roa fights one of her sisters, she will gain a "databank" based on who she defeats. This facsimile changes not only Roa's various attacks, but also her movement, defensive properties, and may also bless her with new abilities. You can switch databanks on the fly, and can even customize the order of your databanks! Some of the differences include somersaulting, throwing blades even while running and speed running over water with Ishida's, Skating firing ice shards that freeze enemies and creating frozen platforms you can jump off of with Adama, and with Aria's you can do flips, mid range heat slashes and a wide range attack that leaves Roa doing extra heat damage to enemies for a time as well as damaging the environment. These are just some of the cool abilities you get with databanks!
- Dual hand firing system and combo attacks: Constancy: Roa has two firing buttons, one for each hand. You can do different attacks depending on how you press said buttons in various situations. This also applies to each of her databanks. You can alternate between hands, use them simultaneously, and even combo one attack into another, provided you have enough energy. You can even change databanks in the middle of a combo!
- "Unlocked" Abilities: As Roa completes stages she'll learn abilities like air dashing, hovering, and a special shield ability she gets very late game which lets her absorb damage even if it would normally be lethal!
- Emergency Escape System (EES): When Roa runs out of energy, hits a lethal hazard or falls into a pit she will use a flash bomb/EMP burst to disable all onscreen enemies and escape to the nearest "safe zone". If she runs out of EES she'll have to return to the hub area to recharge them. All changes made to the level during the initial run will remain.
- Stage alteration: Stages are altered depending on the order you tackle them in!
- Multi-phase boss battles: Bosses will be fought in phases and have a variety of environmental and ability changes during the fight!
- Infinity Mode: In Infinity Mode areas are randomly generated with a boss at the end. New bosses and enemies can be encountered in this mode. You can also use other characters from the game in this mode!
- Exceed Mode: This mode changes the rules of the game and changes the story into a completely crazy version of it's former self. When activating this ALL modes and difficulties are effected by it. It's like a whole new game!
- Difficulties: After beating the game you'll unlock Advanced difficulty. In this difficulty there are new enemies and bosses and Roa's reaction time to hazards is reduced but, her defense and the damage she does to enemies remains the same as standard. There's even higher modes of difficulty like Extreme which ups the ante even more and Insanity for well....... crazy people! Difficulty wise you'll find something for everyone.
- Secrets Galore!: There are tons of secrets in Constancy: Roa, from hidden bosses to secret abilities you'll discover many things you didn't expect to find! There is even a hidden ultimate boss!
- Downloadable Extra Content: Yes, we plan to add a couple extra stages to Constancy: Roa at some point containing new boss fights. However, you won't be paying for them as long as you have paid for Constancy: Roa. They'll be entirely free!
- Online Scoreboards: The regular game in Roa as well as Infinity Mode has a score system which is based on a lot of factors, not just speed! What rank can you earn?
- Achievements: Constancy: Roa has it's own achievement system which upon beating the game you can use the points gained to unlock extras like starting the game with Roa "unlocked" having all the databanks already and lots of other cool things!
It is sometime in the second Millennium. Garrett Oswald, a brilliant scientist, manages to find a means to combine organic and inorganic tissue. This is accomplished through the injection of a special compound that he calls "U". With the assistance of a highly sophisticated computer running specialized software implanted in the back of the human brain, a subject can learn to completely control their own cells at will. This allows them to remove usual human limitations such as a finite lifespan, irreparable neural injuries, and susceptibility to disease. The end goal was to send these cyborgs to colonize new worlds in the name of expansion and exploration. Shiki, a near perfect specimen of humanity, becomes the first successful cyborg.
However, when the same process is attempted on a male, unexpected results occur. The man is transformed; his mind subsumed into the program and his body merging with and encasing itself in metal, becoming incapable of reproduction and turning him into a emotionless machine. As a result, the cyber-genesis project is reclassified as a military application to produce tools for the United States government. Instead of giving these subjects names, they are given armor classes and IDs. Shiki is given the classification: "Omega". To society at large they do not exist, but are merely secret tools of the government, not even considered truly human.
Following a string of successes and shortcomings, several new cyborgs emerge, and mankind is on its way to a new golden age. But recently, a string of disasters begin to strike America. As this goes on, a relatively new subject of the cyber-genesis project, Roa, awakens as a cyborg for the first time only to find a gun pointed directly at her face...
Roa (Pronounced - "Row") was once a sickly girl, trapped in a hospital bed due to a degenerative illness that doctors said would claim her life before she turned 18. On one of her rare good days, a nurse took pity on her and she was invited to accompany her to a martial arts tournament. It was then that she met Shiki, who was a contestant. Getting to see Shiki personally after the match changed Roa's destiny when Shiki took a liking to the young girl and developed a desire to save her. Though the reasons for this are not completely known, Roa was placed in the cyber-genesis program by Shiki and her procedure was a success. However, for some reason, Shiki insisted that she be relegated to a support role.
Shiki was the first successful cyber-genesis subject, and has assisted with the growth and security of the project ever since. She believes that failure to achieve the greatest accomplishment in one’s field renders their life worthless, and this has driven her to achieve physical heights unimaginable by most people. Several years ago she met Roa and for reasons not really clear she decided she would help her at all costs, eventually adding her to the ranks of the cyborgs in order to save her life. It wouldn’t be long before something would cause Shiki to turn against those who had been using her and her kind like mere tools...
Rylia Griffon (Pronounced "Ray-la") is one of three navigators assigned to assist with the cyborgs in various fashions. She serves as Roa's navigator throughout the course of the game. She is normally quite friendly but gets annoyed easily when asked to repeat something or when people cannot understand what she says.
Adama (Pronounced "A-da-ma") was once a quiet reserved girl who enjoyed the company of animals and rarely opened up to others. She joined the cyber-genesis program due to the urgings of her father, who was a prominent scientist. She met Roa in the lobby and her contrasting, cheery personality eventually won her over, causing them to become close friends. After becoming a cyborg, she became far less reserved then she once was and now tends to speak her mind without hesitation. That said, she still likes nature more than she likes people.
Aria (Pronounced "A-rye") used to be your typical New York rich girl. She thought she had everything she could wish for in life: more money than she could ever use, beauty that made other girls envious, and a powerful boyfriend. Her life changed forever, though, when that boyfriend betrayed her to his associates, and they brutally attacked and violated her. After the attack, she received an invitation to undergo the Cyber-genesis process. She saw it as an opportunity, and vowed to carry out her revenge. In the aftermath, she is sullen and quiet, rarely willing to look another person in the eye. She works hard to maintain her beautiful, sexy appeal, though now this is a stark contrast to the way she feels inside.
Ishida was a victim of a car accident that left her comatose and her mother dead. Due to her parents' background she was brought to a military hospital where, she was eventually chosen as a candidate for cyber- genesis. Her transformation turned her into a feared assassin and killing machine. There is little information on Ishida, other than she is extremely blunt and fiercely loyal to Oswald. She is an expert in strategy and planning, and will not hesitate to kill anyone who stands in his way.
Selene was a deeply religious person who grew up with her Amish grandparents. However, as she got older she began to see technology not as an affront to God but a medium for spreading God's love, and she eventually ran off to join a radical religious movement. Unfortunately, this cult was eventually raided by the FBI, and in the ensuing firefight Selene was critically injured. Taken into custody on the brink of death, she survived that night on will alone. It was then that Freya decided she would make a good addition to their kind. Upon awakening, Selene realized that she had lost her eyesight. However, after Shiki allowed her to discover her new ability to hack into various cameras, she found that she could see more than she ever had before. She believes that her faith saved her and that becoming a cyborg was her calling. Selene is very calm and difficult to anger, as she sees everything as a test of her faith.
Freya was once a popular opera singer, but seemed to be on the tail end of her career as her voice had begun to crack from age. She had begun taking experimental drugs, hoping to hold off the end of her career. It was at this time that Shiki approached Freya and told her of a more permanent solution. Freya's intense willpower allowed her to become a cyborg and gave her what she desired most: eternal youth and beauty. However, she had also grown narcissistic, and has decided to abandon her old life, leaving behind a husband and daughter, who she has not seen since.
Aqua has lived almost her entire life in the water. Her parents, both eccentric marine biologists, intended her upbringing as an experiment; an attempt to make a human being that empathized with sea life more than with her land bound ancestors. They succeeded, but their methods inspired a radical human rights group to raid their ship, and when they resisted they were killed before Aqua’s eyes. She was placed in the custody of the state, a heavy burden, as she would become violently ill if she were out of the water for long. It wasn’t long before she came to the attention of Oswald, who offered her the chance to become what her parents had always intended for her: a fully aquatic human being. She has a forceful and unflinching personality, though she can be pleasant enough to those who bow to her whims. She has gained the ability to communicate with nearly all forms of life using specially designed sound frequencies emitted by her cyborg armor, and thinks of herself as having been crowned Queen of the Oceans; representative of all aquatic life.
Misha comes from an expansive middle-eastern family with very strict morals, but she routinely rebelled against said morals, having a lack of interest towards men as well as serious insecurities about her appearance since she was born. She met Oswald when she tried to push him out of the way of a collapsing building, but her spine was crushed in the process. Although ultimately saved by Shiki, Oswald was impressed by Misha's sentiment, and gave her a choice while she was in the hospital. Either she would go back to her old life good as new, or she could become the person she always wanted to be. She chose the latter.
Yuimei (Pronounced "you-may") was born and raised in Chinatown as a half Chinese - half American. The treatment she received as a result of this made her despise her heritage. She sought ways to disguise her heritage and so she dyed her hair pink with white stripes. At the age of 14 she fell in with an anti-governmental terrorist group called Red Dawn, and learned to become an explosives expert. She used these newfound skills to attack government installations. One day though, she made a mistake. She found out that a close friend was inside one of the buildings she had set to blow and tried to save them, but failed and was caught in the explosion. On the brink of death she met Shiki and her sad last words convinced Shiki to let her join the cyber-genesis program. Yuimei is fond of acting cutesy to fool people when she's being devious. Her cute appearance hides a genius level intellect and a playful but often times dangerous mind.
Should we be funded we plan a full 4 stage + hub area demo in roughly between 3 - 4 months. You'll be able to try 3 new databanks and 2 new abilities!
Hardships and triumphs
Some years ago we decided we wanted to make a game that took some of the concepts from 2d side-scrollers of old and combine them with ideas that 3d games made more prominent, such as combination attacks, enhanced AI, and deeper stories. After musing over it a bit we came up with the first sprites of Shiki, Roa was born from that and the result years later is what you see here today.
Constancy: Roa, like any project, has had it's ups and downs. A number of talented artists we had starting out on the project left, and the project continued along slowly. While this went on for some time we were always able to get new people. Then one day about half our staff just up and left us all in the same month. It was at that time that we put up an ad for a sprite artist and Heavy Cat Media responded. Working with them for the past several months has been a very different experience. They have shown incredible dedication and commitment to our project, and they guarantee their results. However, they are work for hire and need to be paid before the project is completed, so that's why we're here.
There are several reasons for this. Our intention is to make choices as a company with as much freedom as possible. We cannot do that if we are hampered by publishers or PR departments telling us what we can or cannot do. We believe that very few games are completed as the vision their creators intended. We want Infinity Ark to be about complete visions, and for Constancy: Roa to be the absolute best game it can be. This means high quality art, a full cast of voices for everyone who speaks, high quality sprite work, and artwork to promote the project. We have everything we need, except for money.
Kickstarter also serves as an excellent means to garner interest in our work. If enough people back this to make it successful then the demand for it is obvious. Lastly, it's a great way to communicate with fans in an open and fun environment. By pledging you're helping to bring Constancy: Roa out as intended in a reasonable amount of time.
How much do we need?
We have done the figuring and come up to an amount of 60,000 for the entirety of Roa's production. Here is a pie chart showing how your money will be used to fund Constancy: Roa
Living expenses $15,000: We need to eat, pay bills and things like that in order to devote our full time to Constancy: Roa, we can't be working other jobs. This is the living expenses for Damian Moss and Abram Lenten. We live in the same apartment and we're the only ones that require living expenses for the project.
Voice Acting $20,000: We plan to have every character in the game to be voiced with high quality voice talent. Prices for voice actresses range from 100$ to 1,000$ depending on the number of lines/hours. Roa, Shiki and Rylia have the longest amount of voice time and we expect them on the higher tier. We're confident this is enough to cover the expenses.
Heavy Cat Media $20,000: They guarantee their work but it's work for hire so we need the money before the game if completed. This is for sprite work, backgrounds, animated sequences, and artwork for the game. Here's the breakdown: level designs: 5,000$, artwork: 5,000$, spritework: 5,000$, misc work such as modeling, effects and things like that: 5,000$. This is for the entire project so it's more then reasonable.
Other Expenses $11,600: This includes all misc expenses such as Kickstarter/Amazon's cut, marketing, legal expenses, backer rewards, a new website domain and overall business expenses. This is created by adding 20% to the amount needed to create the game and is a "safety net" of sorts in case problems pop up. If we where to cut this we might be fine, or we might be in trouble if problems arose later on. Think of this as your product guarantee.
If you add it up you'll see there's a missing amount of 600 which is no problem we'll easily cover that with our own money. We've already sunk a substantial amount of money into this project. That's why we need your help to keep funding it!
Roa running! Roa's entire sheet for basic form is done and contains about 300 sprites. Each databank form will be done as the respective boss is completed. The final total of her sprites will be somewhere around 500-600. Average animation size is between 12 - 16 frames. We want to keep the animations smooth but fast.
The cast in sprite form! The one on the far right is Briggs, who will get his own bio and art in due time!

$70 - Constancy: Roa Limited Edition physical disc (limit 8)
$60 - Constancy: Roa 1/8 figure (Choose between Roa and Aria limit 8)
A poll for the third figure is up here
We've made of list of things we'd like to add to the game beyond it's initial version. These items are at our cost of creation and are meant to add things into the current game as well as thank our backers for their support!
$61,000 - Roguelike mode
Infinity Mode gains a new option that allows you to start from scratch and gain abilities and databanks as you finish areas instead of loading a save file like you normally would.
$62,000 - New Databank and character for Infinity Mode
You'll get a new Databank during the course of the game. Like the other databanks using this will change all of Roa's abilities and moves! This will bring the total possible databanks to 11! It will also be possible to unlock a new character to play as in Infinity Mode as well!
$65,000 - Roa's new clothes
Early in the game Roa comments that someone dressed her funny. Roa's actually a pretty classy girl and prefers pretty dresses to skintight body suits. With this reward we'll give her what she wants a pretty flowing blue dress. So if you'd like to see Roa wear something she'd rather have on here you go! This outfit will be unlockable after beating the game and come in a variety of possible colors in addition to Roa's preferred blue.
$69,000 - All eight main cyborgs playable in Infinity Mode!
We intended to make Aria, Misha, Yuimei, and Adama playable in addition to one character not to be named yet and Roa. With the earlier stretch goal you get one additional playable beyond that. However, we think there's plenty of people who'd like to use the all 8 of the main cyborgs right so, why stop there? With this Freya, Aqua, Ishida, and Selene will all be playable as well!
$79,000 - Console ports to Wii U, 3DS, PS3, PS4 and PSVita
We'd love to put Constancy: Roa on any system that can play it properly. If we reach this stretch goal we'll get the ball rolling on that right away. We'll do our best to have it rolling out on all platforms simultaneously. It's unlikely we'd be able to offer physical copies of games on these consoles but we can likely get them up on the various online systems.
$88,000 - Playable Shiki and Shiki story mode
If you ask anyone who has been working on or known about this project for the years we've worked on it you'll find out we've flatly denied any intention of ever making Shiki playable. When you see her in game you'll know exactly why that is because Shiki would be a balancing nightmare! However if we reach this stretch goal we'll break that taboo and not only will she be playable in all modes including Exceed mode, but she'll have her own full game story mode as well. We'll find a way to balance her properly as well. We're not expecting this to be reached of course. : )
