Rabbit Moon Bakery is a community-owned venture in Downtown South Bend that is setting up the world's first Oneironautical Headquarters. Our goal is to restore the first of many empty buildings in the area and turn it into a thriving hub of art, culture, business, and community. We have created a new model of doing business (that is really a new model of living) based on the simple truth that when we work together, everything is possible. The bakery is known locally for its delicious treats, and we're looking forward to sending out heavenly boxes of yumminess to all our backers.
How does Kickstarter work?
Support us by clicking the "Back This Project" button. Enter your generous donation and select the appropriate reward. Kickstarter accepts payments through Amazon and we have 28 days to reach our goal. If within this time we get enough pledges, then your card gets charged with the amount you selected and we ship the rewards you picked. If by January 2nd we collect less than our goal, then nobody gets charged, and we go back to the drawing board.
An oneironaut is a navigator of dreams.
What is your dream? Have you ever had one of those amazing ideas that filled you with passion and inspiration? Have you ever wanted to do something that you thought was impossible? We’ve all been there. We’ve dreamed big, only to be faced with the obstacles of everyday life: jobs, money, and responsibilities. What was needed at that moment was an Oneironautical Headquarters, a place to go where everything is possible.
We started with the idea of a co-working space, a shared work environment with everything a startup business needs, and expanded the concept to be a space in which any kind of idea, dream, or project could be developed. Whether your passion is an inspirational work of art, an exciting new business idea, ending hunger in your hometown, or even world peace, a cooperative work space surrounded by a community of passionate individuals is what is needed for projects to get off the ground. And because a lot of ideas are hampered by resources, we wanted to supply the start-up resources so that people could more easily do the things they’re passionate about. You want to make a movie but don’t have $15k to drop on a camera? That’s what we’re here for.
Now how do you fund this crazy idea? We developed a new business model and then launched a for-profit bakery. The bakery is just one facet of a co-operatively owned and operated business structure. We've structured our company so that rather than paying out dividends to the co-op members, our members get discounts at co-op businesses, thus allowing us to reinvest 100% of our profits back into the community, fund the Oneironautical HQ and various artistic projects, and launch new co-operative business ventures to continue the cycle of good works.
We have found the perfect building to bring this whole project under one roof. Located in a part of downtown that the city wants to revitalize, the bottom floor has four storefronts, and the top floor consists of 16 apartments / offices. Our plan is to convert the entire top floor into the Oneironautical HQ, creating multiple spaces for collaboration and co-work. Downstairs, we have teams heading up a commercial kitchen in one storefront, a café / restaurant area in two spaces, and a multi-use studio for art, yoga, and community needs in the final retail storefront. There are also four basements that will house additional projects.
We have lots of ideas and talents in-house, and new exciting projects are being developed as new members join. We are a team of diversely talented, community-oriented volunteers with backgrounds ranging from construction to social media to sustainability sciences. We have pooled capital and are raising money through membership, but we need your help to create this amazing vision! We are seeking an additional $20k in funding to allow us to purchase the building and begin remodeling in early 2013.
Our longer term goal is to help facilitate a co-operative renaissance in the area. There are many unused buildings in need of some TLC, and so many opportunities to do good when we work together. Help us 'be the change' and in the spirit of Austin, my college stomping grounds, help us 'make South Bend weird'.
Be sure to check us out on Facebook for all the latest updates from the bakery. And for anyone in the area who wants to help directly, collaborate, or share ideas, contact us via email!
And now for the sweets! Here’s what we’re offering our backers…
If the term macarOn conjures up images of gooey mounds of shredded coconut, then you’re thinking of macarOOns, and you’re in for a delightful surprise. The macarOn is what every cookie wishes it could be. Leave it to the French to turn something as ordinary as a cookie into an experience of rapture, heaven, and bliss. Macarons are almond-based treats that are famous throughout Paris for their amazing colors, flavors, and elegance. Each bite of a macaron is an adventure into a land of yumminess that often leads to near-mystical experiences.
When we started making macarons, we wanted to be unique. So we did away with artificial flavors, dyes, and preservatives, and developed a line of 100% all-natural macarons using only the finest ingredients. After much experimentation, and by local popular demand, our kickstarter flavor list includes: cinnamon-cappuccino, chocolate-raspberry truffle, lavender-blueberry bliss, lemons-n-cream, vanilla rose, and Madagascar-Bourbon vanilla bean.
Like our macarons, our line of classic marshmallows are 100% natural. Each batch is made with only pure cane sugar, water, kosher gelatin, the fluffiest air, a pinch of salt, plus premium flavors like vanilla bean, freshly brewed espresso, or organic oil of peppermint. Classic flavors available for the kickstart are: vanilla bean, cappuccino, chocolate-covered peppermint, and orange cream.
How can you beat a classic? Only with booze, of course. Our ‘Boozy Bunny’ line of marshmallows combines our classic marshmallow recipes with popular spirits. Choose from amazing combinations like Guinness & pretzel, Pirate’s delight (a layer of dark rum and a layer of vanilla), chocolate-covered red wine marshmallows, Irish cream and coffee, or Frangelico cappuccino.
The lovely Samantha Davis, a talented local artist, will be designing our oneironautical t-shirts. The above is a sample of her work, stay tuned for more!
Risks and challenges
We want to have the top floor up and running in 2013, but it's a big project! The building is currently a shell. Everything has to be rewired, we have to install plumbing, heating and cooling, sheet rock, and replace some of the flooring.
There are also some architectural changes and challenges (removing walls, opening up larger spaces) that need to be done, as well as remodeling every surface in the interior.
Our co-op is committed to sustainability and the environment. Another challenge will be affordably outfitting a building built in 1900 to be as efficient as possible.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
