The Horrors is a frightening collection of cryptids, monsters, and ghosts from around the world, drawn in crisp black ink, ready for you to color! The idea for the book came from a series of sketches I had done of various creatures that scared me. After finishing ten of the sketches in pen and ink, I decided to expand the horror art into a book. For each of the 30 nightmares, there is a short story explaining their origins and history.
Since some of the illustrations include guts, gore, and possibly (monstrous) nudity, this coloring book is not suitable for children, only for adults. I've been working on these illustrations since august of 2013, and plan to finish them, and print the book, by june of 2014. Twenty of the thirty illustrations are complete, and the written stories and history of the monsters are ready to go as well.
After putting so much work into these monsters, I want to share them with every horror fan who has a deck of crayons. That's going to require getting review copies to a variety of reviewers, horror industry websites, cryptid and parnormal bloggers, and other people who can review and help get the word out. It's going to require another month or two of drawing time, as well as organizing to sell the book at conventions. For that, I need money.
I'm seeking $2500. with those funds,
- some will cover Kickstarter (5%) and Amazon (3-5%) fees.
- $600 will cover costs for printing and shipping books to me. Those will be used to fulfill rewards and for book promotion activities. This includes print costs at createspace.
- $200-400 will go towards costs of packaging and shipping rewards. This cost could vary widely, depending on how many backers there are and which rewards they choose.
- The remaining funds will be used for other expenses related to book promotion, and to pay me a bit for the work of making the illustrations, as well as supplies for making them. I'll be presenting the book for sale on my own site and will use some of the funds to also promote the book with ads.
- I plan to have a booth at an upcoming horror convention to sell them, some of the funds will cover the booth fees and setup.
I plan to be finished with the book by the end of May, 2014- which means the print run should be done by July first. I estimate these dates, because there could be delays, but a few months is a reasonable time frame to edit the book, get it to print, and ship out reward copies.
For the bigger reward of painted originals, I expect to take an extra three weeks to finish them- although this could vary depending on how many I end up doing.
I'm planning to kick it forward, as well: http://kickingitforward.org
Risks and challenges
I am working on this project at the same time I am completing another- a coffee table book of tattoos and paintings I have done. This necessitates having a relatively tight schedule for several months. I started on this in August, hoping to be finished by October for Halloween- and I was only halfway there when october rolled around! I am allowing ample time to finish the last few illustrations, and to get the book to press.
I think it may be difficult, after this book is finished, to market it well. It is for adults, after all, and contains adult themes and scary images. While there is a solid fanbase for horror art and the paranormal, the fact that these works are all original, not based on any well-known story, or on any copyrighted characters, means that it may not sell as well as something such as fan-art. Working with original materials and concepts means that this project does not have the benefit of any franchise's hard work to give it a boost.
I am not a marketing genius, and I'm not sure how much publicity this project will get. I know that basing art on something unoriginal but popular always sells better than actual original artwork- I think that's a shame, but it is how things are. I plan to do my best to get this project some visibility. I am in some doubt about whether this kickstarter will be fully funded, but I have high hopes and plan to do my best!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
