Hey there! My name is Dakota Cates, but many people will know me on the internet as Wizard of Barge! I'm a full-time illustrator and cool thing-maker from Houston, TX. I've always been inspired by fantasy, monsters, the occult, and basically any weird mysterious forces of the universe! Which brings me to my latest project....
THE WIZARD'S TAROT!
If you follow me online you probably know I took on this project months ago and it's completely taken over my life. Well I've finally finished it!
The Wizard's Tarot is a 78 card full color tarot deck, featuring four suits (56 Minor Arcana), and all 22 Major Arcana, all of which contain the brightest and most epic scenes my brain could conjure up!
But wait! This is no ordinary tarot deck, we're gettin' weird! Instead of the standard four suits, (swords, wands, pentacles, and cups) I decided to go a different, and dare I say? More magical route!
The suits in the Wizard's Tarot are..
That's right! A whole 14 card suit dedicated to the creatures that crawl in my head! This suit is meant to replace the traditional suit of wands!
Oh boy, if you remember my zine "Black Magic For Dummies" you'll know this one is right up my alley! Spells, ghosts, hexes, oh my! This suit is meant to replace the traditional suit of cups!
It's always been a dream of mine to be the leader of a cult. Not a mean or evil one, but like, maybe one where all you watch is cartoons and live in a castle made of slime. This suit is meant to replace the traditional suit of coins / pentacles!
AND FINALLY.. SWORDS?
Yeah I know I said I had new suits, but like, swords are cool and we need to accept that. Don't make me stab you!
So those are the suits! But don't fret, I didn't create an entire new set of guidelines based around you getting cursed or eaten by a beast. You simply just use the traditional translations through my outlandish artwork!
I decided to stray away from most of the usual symbolism in typical tarot decks in order to mesh with my art style and create the most imaginative, fun, strange world that I could. Although I have monsters and cults and kind of dark subject matter, this is a very bright and fun deck made up of kooky characters in imaginary worlds that I love. Nothing more nothing less! Immerse yourself in the weird!!
The cards will measure traditional Tarot card size at 2.75in x 4.75in (70mm x 121mm). The deck will be printed on 300gsm smooth cardstock, shrink wrapped, and delivered in a custom matching tuck box featuring a devilishly handsome wizard! Also the cards feature a reversible back design so you'll never know the orientation of the card until flipped over!
*UPGRADED* Since we went way over goal I'm upgrading every deck to come with a fancy, sturdier 2 piece box instead of the aforementioned tuckbox, NOW IT'S LIKE, 6% COOLER!!!
I wanted to keep the rewards for this fairly simple since the main goal is just to create the tarot deck, but I did want to make a couple new prints for backers to get their hands on!
These babies are epic! Goblins? Dragons? Wizards? Unicorns? I mean, come on!! I had a blast making these and think they look great together, so there is a reward for just the prints, or one with the prints and deck included (recommended for maximum magical sorcery) Frame these babies up and they'll conjure a magic force-field of radness around your home! *PS: i am not liable if someone breaks through the force-field and burgles your home, lock that door dummy!* Each print measures 5x7!
THANK YOU FOR YOUR SUPPORT!
And at long last every single backer will also receive one of these 5.5 x 2.14 stickers to proudly show your allegiance with wizards, witches and warlocks everywhere!
Thanks so much for looking/backing this project! It's been a huge work in progress and I'm really stoked to finally make it a reality. Whether you're a tarot collector, a fan of my artwork, or you're just lost and got this mixed up with your grandmother's gofundme page, thank you for the support!
You can keep up with my artwork and see more of the cards I'll be posting throughout the campaign here on my Instagram!
Risks and challenges
I've been producing and shipping my own products for years now and am pretty well versed in the entire process. Of course random acts of chaos sometimes pop up and cause delays, but I honestly don't see any of that happening here! All of the artwork is done, and I'm making the very final tweaks before they're ready to go off to the printer! Now I just need help funding this bad boy!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
