More and more barriers are created everyday--we believe stories and storytelling are bridges over any barrier.
By engaging women refugees to tell their stories of strength and resilience, our multi-media project aims to represent the hope generated through women relating to each other beyond personal hardships, beyond language or culture, and beyond borders.
With this belief that storytelling is the best way to connect, Finding Roots & Wings will gather stories of strength and resilience and present them in such a way that opens hearts and minds. Remaining sensitive to considerations of various levels of anonymity required, and allowing people to present themselves as they wish, we will use the tools of various multimedia platforms, and build trust while expanding singular experiences to a shared experience and, most importantly, stay connected.
This video was put together from cell phone footage shot by Alexandra along a migration path in Serbia, October 2015--an experience that fueled that Finding Roots & Wings Project.
I want to thank everyone for all the encouraging support---our Kickstarter is off to an amazing start!!
I thought I should give a little more information about why this project, Finding Roots & Wings, speaks so much to me. It is something I think about often, but often find hard to explain. It came out in the words below as I reflected on my time traveling--off on my own, and how difficult it can be to maintain a sense of connection. My travels are ones I choose, as I try to learn more about cultures and histories and the ways people interact with each other. But, crossing paths with people who are fleeing for safety, they do not have many choices about where they can go--and, I wonder how they stay grounded and carry that feeling of home along with them.
What is it about women traveling alone that stands out? There is something about it--a woman on a journey that makes us take pause. I know a lot of women who travel alone, strong women, fierce women and I often try to see myself that way, but I just kind of fell into a nomadic life and don’t see myself as particularly stronger or braver than any other women I meet--especially not those on the road--and not those on the road escaping war, hunger, persecution. Those women, the refugee women deserve pause and an applause. And, they deserve to have their stories told in their way, on their terms.
Women traveling alone, off on their own is something I know about--something I can portray and it is one of the roots of this project. We seek to gather women’s stories of hope so we can spread it all around and all be stronger for it, together.
