Smeagull the Seagull tells the story of this remarkable bird who taught himself to knock on our door to be fed, of our affection for him, and what happens when he unaccountably disappears. It's a wonderful book, all of it true!
Kids love it! But there's a problem:
Most children cannot afford the hardcover copy of Smeagull the Seagull, and we want to include them too.
And that's what this project is about.
Seagulls are ubiquitous, voluble, intelligent and WILD, making them the perfect avatar for the Natural World. Seagulls want to know you! That means children, easily, get to know and like and become attached to them! Which in turn teaches a child, in a most personal way, about the value and importance of Nature and all the life that lives within it.
That's why we want to put this book and the ideas it contains into the hands of as many children as we possibly can.
How can we possibly do that?
Digital Multimedia Book!
One with animation, live sound, a professional recorded reading (by Mark) and all Valerie's illustrations from the hardcover original.
In our multimedia digital book almost all the cost is up front. So any child or parent can own the digital Smeagull the Seagull for any contribution, however small. Or, for FREE!
Our Kickstarter video starts with a VERY ROUGH DRAFT of only the very beginning of Smeagull the Seagull. And that was major work. What now?
On the Up Side:
We already have all the "stuff." That's why our goal is relatively low. Mark Seth Lender is a producer for wildlife content and the Explorer in Residence at PRI's Living on Earth. He has all the photographs, wild sound, and writing skills we need. Valerie Elaine Pettis, the book's illustrator and beating heart, is a graphic designer of international reputation, known especially for her work in human rights, women's rights in particular, and for her works for the environment. We are contributing all our time and our assets. Our digital designer, Robbie Mikel Savage, is working for almost nothing. Our composer, Stacey Rose, is writing an original musical theme for Smeagull the Seagull. Stacey is an internationally known concert pianist and Steinway Artist and is also working for a token amount.
WE CAN DO THIS!
All we need is, a little help from our friends (we'll get by with a little help... )
Risks and challenges
Our Kickstarter video starts with a VERY ROUGH draft of the digital multimedia version that this project hopes to fund. As you can see there's a long way to go. And of course it has to be "kid tested" which will surely result in revisions - time consuming, but doable. We expect to complete the video by the end of 2019.
The larger problem is distribution which is why we're relying on you, our friends and supporters, to spread the word. Spread it far and wide. Help us make this happen, you'll be proud that you did.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
