People of the internet, PigPen Theatre Co. here.
3 years ago, you kind, generous, and certainly-better-than-average-looking folks kickstarted our debut album, “Bremen”. You gave us $12,951 and it changed pretty much everything. Really! We’re a band now, as well a theatre company. And that album, “Bremen”, was ranked the #10 album of 2012 by The Huffington Post! Which sent us out on tour – playing concerts in over 40 cities all across the United States. Alongside the concert tour, we performed award-winning runs of our play, “The Old Man and The Old Moon”, in Chicago, Boston, and Times Square in New York City.
So let’s do it again, shall we?
We’ve been writing new songs. A lot of new songs. We’ve been playing some of those new songs at our concerts and you all seem to be enjoying the new songs. And we've acquired new skills too. Matt shreds nasty solos! Ben's beard can grow a beard! Arya is totally bald now! Did we mention the new songs? Here’s one called “Weathervane”:
And there are many many more. But we still need your help to get them to you. Making an album is expensive. Animation is also expensive. Touring is even more expensive. And we’d like to keep doing all these things, with your help, until someone asks us to stop. Here’s how much this is going to cost:
THE “DREAM” STUDIO – $10K
We recorded “Bremen” in 4 days in the financial district of New York City. While it was an amazing whirlwind process – we want to try something different. We’re going to leave the city and drive up to the legendary Dreamland Recording Studios in Woodstock, NY to live there for 12 days and make a record. Dreamland is a beautiful converted church that has hosted many of our favorite artists (Fleet Foxes, The National, and Arcade Fire, to name a few) so there will be plenty of inspiration abound. Just check out this view:
THE PRODUCERS – $5K
The goal for this album is to capture more of the energy of our live concerts, while retaining the instrumental specificity of “Bremen” and “The Way I’m Running”.
We can’t wait to get back to work with our long-time friend and collaborator Ron Robinson Jr. (the man behind “Bremen” and “The Way I’m Running”), our work is his work, so he needs no introduction. Our new friend, and addition to the team, is Jesse Lauter - producer/engineer/mixer extraordinaire! Jesse has worked with some incredible folks (Langhorne Slim, Glen Hansard, The Low Anthem, Lucius, etc) and we couldn’t be more excited to have him collaborating with us on this new sound.
MASTERING – $1K
Once the new songs are recorded and mixed (all dressed up), we send them off to get mastered (hair and make-up). Those masters are what you hear on the album (and this analogy ends up on a red carpet somewhere).
PHYSICAL PRODUCTION AND ARTWORK – $2.5K
We have to make these super cool CDs so we can send them to you.
TRANSPORTATION / SUPPLIES / MISC. EXPENSES – $1.5K
The logistical costs involved in transporting, housing, and feeding 9 people in the middle of the winter in upstate New York. Must remember to buy blankets. And hot cocoa.
With the initial 20K hit - it's time to REACH FOR IT! All new money is going straight to the “Be Our Own Label Fund".
And with that money (as well as the savings in our Piggy Bank) we'll be producing:
A 30 CITY CONCERT TOUR - Costs $30,000
Did we mention we’re going to TAKE THESE SONGS ON THE ROAD and play concerts around the country? Because we are. More info on that forthcoming… But here's how much that costs us:
- Transportation - $10,000
- Food - $7,000
- Shelter - $5,000
- Gas - $4,000
- Insurance - $3,000
- Tolls - $1,000
- Trolls (our first born children)
- Therapists (you don't even want to know)
- Air Fresheners ($10 - but you can never really have enough)
A NEW ANIMATED PROJECT - Costs another $10,000
We've been waiting for the right time to team back up with our friends at Buffalo Picture House, the talented filmmakers behind the "Bremen" animated short, to create something new. And that time is now. We'll choose a song off the new album and create a video that combines more of our live puppetry and concert performance with a new animated world.
Risks and challenges
We've been making music and theatre together for 7 years and have a really solid track record of fulfilling our debts and obligations. Or else we probably would have stopped doing it by now.
That being said, as far as rewards go, some of these things are out of our hands - particularly when it comes to production and scheduling. We'll promise to get you your rewards as soon as we have them! And some of the bigger prizes (your own cover, dinner, unique songs) could take months to organize, depending on our touring schedule, but you'll be in direct contact with us the whole time!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
