Following the success of the first two editions of AdA - Author directing Author – which resulted from this unique international collaboration between us and culminating in the presentation of international premieres of four new plays performed in three different languages (Spoleto Festival of Two Worlds, Fringe Festival Madrid, La MaMa Theatre New York, Biennale Internazionale Teatro Venezia, Grec Festival Barcelona) we are now back at work for the third edition which is scheduled to open at La MaMa Theatre of New York.
After HOME and DESIRE, this year’s theme is POWER and the Spanish playwright/director Marta Buchaca joins us for this edition of AdA. Each of us wrote a one-act play that one of us directs.
These three US premieres will be performed together in a single show, creating one provocative and passionate evening of theatre.
Three authors. Three plays. Three directors. One show.
"Both playwrights are known for their pitch-black views of human nature, [which] seemed to promise a Halloween-worthy orgy of creepy misanthropy. The entertaining results of this union turn out to be more delicate and complex." -- Ben Brantley, The New York Times
“Calvani's thorny, elliptical work introduces an exciting new voice with a reverence for the 20th-century masters. [...] As directors Calvani and LaBute are finely attuned to each other's verbal rhythms and their characters' buried animosities.” -- Diane Snyder, Time Out
AdA is a simple yet winning concept that should enthuse many NYC theatregoers. AdA is a triumph.” -- Brett Epstein, Theatre is Easy
“A must-see." -- Nick Russell, TheaterMania
“Author Directing Author is an innovative idea, and a smart way to celebrate the collaborative process... The perfect play for La MaMa." -- Marcina Zaccaria, Theater Pizzazz
Risks and challenges
For this third edition of our project we really need your help!
We invited a third playwright/director from Spain to join us, as we believe AdA deserves to be addressed to a larger group of artists.
Most of the needed fund is to allow Marta Buchaca to come to New York city and work with us for one month.
The risk we are now facing is that Marta can't come to New York and so to lose the chance to open the show at La MaMa.
We truly believe we will make it happen once again with your support!
Our dream is to expand AdA with many other writers/directors worldwide. So we need your help to make it possible!
