A prototype is a preliminary model of something. Projects that offer physical products need to show backers documentation of a working prototype. This gallery features photos, videos, and other visual documentation that will give backers a sense of what’s been accomplished so far and what’s left to do. Though the development process can vary for each project, these are the stages we typically see:
Proof of Concept
Explorations that test ideas and functionality.
Demonstrates the functionality of the final product, but looks different.
Looks like the final product, but is not functional.
Appearance and function match the final product, but is made with different manufacturing methods.
Appearance, function, and manufacturing methods match the final product.
About this project
Introducing: The Orange Peel the best way to store, recycle, and reuse your surf wax. It's designed to fit into your automobile's cupholder and collect leftover bits, dirty bits, or even old bits of wax and turn them into a new bar. We know you have probably experienced getting surf wax all over your car's interior and we also know The Orange Peel will be the perfect solution to fix that.
The goal of the Orange Peel is to help every surfer make even the smallest impact on the environment and keep their cars from becoming modern art pieces covered in melted wax!
Storage: Once you place The Orange Peel in your car all you have to do is throw those left over chunks of wax from each session inside. Quit leaving them in your board shorts, on the beach, or all over your car's interior.
Recycling: The internal heat of your car and the sun's direct heat will melt down those bits of wax into a new bar, without you having to do anything!
Not everyone lives in a state as hot and sun filled as Florida so we made The Orange Peel microwave and oven safe. Once The Orange Peel is full, pop it in the oven and melt down a new bar of wax in just a couple minutes!
Reuse: Stop throwing away wax if it has a little bit of sand on it! Any old or dirty wax can easily be recycled. Once melted, the sand and particulate will sink to the bottom. When it becomes solid again the sand will be on one side and it can be easily scraped off.
While surf wax may not be the most expensive thing on the planet, it does add up and it's environmental impact is even more detrimental.
Tapered Design: The exterior angle of The Orange Peel allows for it's placement into most modern cupholders, even those oddly large or weirdly little cupholders.
Silicone construction: The silicone that makes up The Orange Peel is extremely flexible but rigid enough to stand on its own. The flexibility makes it extremely easy to remove the wax with little effort.
The Orange Peel is resistant to heat and UV light, making it last longer in the environment it works best in. The properties of silicone also make it so nothing can stick to it. You won't ever have to worry about wax sticking to The Orange Peel.
Wax Splitter: That bar that runs down the middle of The Orange Peel helps you split the soldified wax into a crescent shape that is easy to use and still feels good in your hand.
The environmental impact from petroleum based waxes can be a lot larger than we notice at the time. Outside of the obvious litter that leftover wax can become, most wax is toxic to the ecosystems wildlife. Having an easy way to store and recycle that leftover wax can help every surfer make the smallest of changes.
The personal impact is something you will notice right away. We have probably all experienced the absurdity of getting surf wax on our cars interior. That one forgotten block can destroy thousands of dollars worth of rugs and upholstery.
It's also incredibly simple, There is very little you need to actually do in order to make an impact on the environment. The Orange Peel is a "set it and forget it design." We want you to place The Orange Peel in your car and forget about it. Let the sun be hot, let your surf wax melt, and let The Orange Peel keep it off your car.
Peel Surf Co. is dedicated to bringing you a unique product that helps surfers recycle and reuse surf wax with little effort. We strive to change the way surfers affect the ocean without affecting the way we surf.
Peel Surf Co started with a single product idea that we thought the surf community could benefit from. The creation of The Orange Peel stemmed from events we witnessed while out surfing. First was the inability to use that last little bit of wax from each bar, it usually ended up becoming a part of our cars upholstery, being left in our board shorts, or worst of all, ending up somewhere on the beach. A perfectly good piece of wax would sometimes just end up covered in sand and discarded.
We decided to do something about those situations, and we hoped to prevent some of the petroleum based waxes from being discarded on the beach, as well as give you a way to recycle and reuse your wax. How many times have you scraped your board clean of wax, smushed it all into a dirty ball, and then discarded it?
We hope The Orange Peel will be the product that not only saves your wax, but also your car seats, your board shorts, and hopefully our beaches.
Risks and challenges
Shipping internationally is going to be one of our largest challenges during this campaign, we are constantly looking for cheaper ways to get The Orange Peel to you guys outside of the US. We will continue to update the campaign as we pursue better shipping options for you.
Another challenge will be the production process, limiting error in any mold process can be challenging, but continuing to work with a quality factory can help us assure a higher level of quality control.
