We want bad weather to be the only thing preventing women from having a perfect day at the beach.

Because of that, we are creating custom, made-to-order bathing suits that fit women's unique bodies and style and all made with a compassionate, technology-driven approach.

We believe that women should not suffer from the least amount of tailoring when they are showing the most amount of skin in public.

Our team of product designers, technologists, ethnographers, swimwear fitters, and technical designers spent the last year collecting data from women and found the swimwear or bathing suit try-on experience to be in desperate need of a re-design.

A New Approach is Needed

From December through April 2016, we will offer custom, made-to-order bathing suits by appointment only in our studio at the Brooklyn Fashion + Design Accelerator. This spring, we’ll move into a NYC pop-up and offer appointments in time for the summer months.

In each appointment, we’ll listen intently to the things our customers need to feel confident lounging around and swimming in public and we’ll make collaborative design decisions with them based on each person’s unique set of needs and fears about their bodies.

We’ll also take the contours of a person’s body and their appetite for showing skin into consideration. These needs will be applied on top of our customer’s choice of five base designs. Sometimes a subtle tweak in the shape of the neckline or the width of a strap is enough to make someone feel more secure or can highlight a part of their body they are proud of.

The base designs are common swimwear shapes like: a classic tank suit or maillot, a triangle bikini, boy shorts, halters, or adjustable briefs. Throughout the campaign, we’ll show you our prototypes, but for now, here are our inspirations.

Old ways of doing things

Consider this: Did you know that over 96% of women report having a negative body image? Did you know that it sometimes starts as early as age five? The combination of poorly lit dressing rooms, commission-driven salespeople, and poorly-sized garments brings these deep-seated issues to the surface and women look in the mirror and blame themselves for a poor fit. 88% of the women we surveyed described trying on a bathing suit as being traumatic.

But it's not women's bodies that are the problem, it's the system by which bathing suits are made.

Swimwear manufacturing works off a grading system where a model (typically a 34B bra size and small bottom size) are the basis for testing the fit of a new bathing suit design. Once the manufacturer gets it right with a woman of this size, the pattern is made larger or smaller and averaged into sizes Small, Medium, and Large so the swimsuits can be produced in mass quantities quickly and inexpensively.

We’ll also take the contours of a person’s body and their appetite for showing skin into consideration.

We’re keeping it simple to start and offering fully-lined bathing suits in high quality, durable black swim fabric that’s met all swim testing requirements. All bathing suits will be Made in NYC.

 We need your help!

Funding from this Kickstarter will help us work through our technology and processes so we meet our goal of making 50 bathing suits for 50 women. We can’t wait to learn from each and every one of you.

Your support of this project will go towards:

  • A swimwear sewing machine
  • A dressing room prototype
  • Software licenses
  • A Wacom tablet, Microsoft Kinects, and a computer with lots of power
  • Epic amounts of spandex, mesh, rubber, and elastic!
  • Consulting fees for software integrators, fit experts, legal experts, and technical designers
  • Overhead like studio space rent, sewing wages, and supplies

We would be remiss in saying that launching this Kickstarter campaign would not have been possible without Lam Thuy Vo's help with this video. Thanks also to Simone Rubi for the song!

Unreasonable Women was founded in 2015 to put women's needs at the center of product, service, and workplace policy design. We aim to eradicate the unnecessary disempowering experiences women have with common products and services. This project is the first of many experiences we want to improve for women across many different aspects of their work and personal lives.

Risks and challenges

Women’s swimwear is as a category holds pros and cons for mass customization. Because the materials in swimwear (like Spandex and rubber) have elasticity, lack of precision in the technology is easily forgiven in the final product. However, women are notoriously the most difficult to please when it comes to fit and their bodies often have more complex shapes than male or children's bodies.

In working out the user experience and the technology needed to make it happen, we’ve modeled out different scenarios with increasing levels of manual processes, so in the worst case scenario, we can deliver a custom swimsuit using tailoring fundamentals and subcontract production within NYC.

We’ve built a nice network of expertise outside the team that is willing to work with us when unforeseen problems arise.

    Body Scan

Body scanning is a new way of capturing accurate measurements of your body. The person being scanned steps into a scanning both wearing tight clothing and within seconds, a scanner detects the space their body occupies and translates it to a digital model you can spin around on your computer or tablet. It does not hurt.

The scan data can be used for fitting clothes, making video game avatars of yourself, 3D printing figurines of yourself, etc.
