Joanna is drowning in the backwaters of 90s England. Her shitty seaside town is slowly suffocating her, and her childhood is lurking round every corner. Her boyfriend, Chris, has always been her rock, but now it feels like he's dragging her further down.
Just when it all seems too much, she finds a strange girl sobbing in the depths of a tidal cave... a girl whose pale light will lead Joanna on a path through devotion and loss, and out into the air.
This first volume is 128pp, perfect-bound, full-colour, with 120gsm interior pages and 300gsm matte covers. The book is sized at w170mm x h240mm, with title design by Paul Duffield.
Please note: this project - including the preview below - discusses suicide, and may not be suitable for everyone. Please take care.

Faith Says You 1: It's Dark Outside collects the first chapter of this story. I aim to produce three books overall, making this a tiny trilogy! All three books are written and thumbnailed; I just need to draw them, and I need your help to print them!
This Kickstarter aims to fund the first volume of Faith Says You. Funds will go directly towards the printing, packaging, distribution, extras (things like the Bookplates, ink cartridges etc.) and fees. Here is a costing breakdown:
Hello! My name is Kate and I like making comics. I live in Northamptonshire with my comic-making partner, Paul Duffield. I've been drawing and writing all my life! My first printed comic was a little strip for my primary school's newspaper about a cat and a dog. I took it very seriously *thumbs*
In 2010, I was awarded the Sequential Art Fellowship for the Arts Foundation, and the funding went towards my first "big" book, Fish + Chocolate, which was subsequently picked up for wider release by SelfMadeHero. In 2015, I made a little comic called The Unicorn & The Woodsman, which was self-funded. I am extremely excited to have the opportunity to begin publishing my new independent book series, Faith Says You, here with you!
Risks and challenges
This is my first solo Kickstarter project, so I understand some people may nervous to back this project. I have recently helped Paul Duffield with the construction and budgeting for his successful Kickstarter, The Firelight Isle: vol1 Heavenly Blue, so I am familiar with the risks and challenges involved.
I have also been creating comics as a full-time job since 2008, and have turned in project after project with no mishaps. This is not a career with room for error...! Before this, I have been making comics for print or digital distribution since 1998. My most recent self-publishing projects include The Unicorn & the Woodsman (self-funded) and Fish + Chocolate (originally financed with funds from The Arts Foundation).
This said, it's best to acknowledge the risks involved when handling other people's money and trust. All my quotes from printers are in, and I am striving to keep this first Kickstarter simple to help avoid any delays. Should any delays be involved (or other significant news) I will immediately update you via Kickstarter and social media (Twitter @autojoy).
With regards to the book itself, at the time of this project going live, I have finished the interior pages and am working on corrections/redraws. I then need to have the book proofed. By the time the Kickstarter is complete, I expect to have the book ready to print as soon as the funding comes through. I have set myself the goal of having print editions ready for Thought Bubble Festival later this year, and so I expect to begin shipping products after the festival has finished. Please ask me if you have any questions!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
