About

Welcome to Tetra

where faith can move mountains- or throw fireballs. These miraculous powers do not belong to a select elite, but to everyone who has come to understand their relationship with at least one of the eight elements- which usually means everyone old enough to enter puberty. Teenage hormones are so much more interesting to deal with when they come with the ability to form metal into battle armour or shape a granite body for your imaginary friend.

In Thieves of Sovereignty, three growing empires and several nomadic tribes are looking for your allegiance, or your life. There are bands of rebels fighting for independence, or for the power to take over entirely. An alliance along the south coast formed between pirates and dragonriders could change everything, and if the dreaded dorudon push past the Ice Guardians in the north, it could mean the end of the world. Everywhere, there are pivot points where a small band of heroes can make a huge difference. And you can start today.

Four Corners: Thieves of Sovereignty is a game about belief and choice. Your beliefs shape who you are and what you are capable of. Your choices can change the world.

Belief

What if the things that you believed about the world and your purpose in it came with the power to control the weather? What if your neighbours held fast to a faith that only people of their bloodline counted as human, that everyone else was for them to use, and this faith came with the power to shape metal into magical armour and weapons? Would you get along with your neighbours, accepting that different people have different beliefs? Would you be tempted to accept their faith as good and true for the power that came with it? Would you spend your afternoons seeing how their metal armour held up to your lightning bolts because their beliefs repulse you? What would the different consequences of each choice be?

The things that you believe are possible, are desirable, are socially acceptable, all shape the choices that you make. In the world of Tetra, it is almost impossible to lie about what you truly believe, especially to yourself, because your core worldview gives you access to powers over the elements. Using the Fate system, your beliefs appear on your character sheets as aspects that define who your character is, often as part of your High Concept or Trouble. It is possible for your beliefs to evolve and change as your character does, but this affects what powers are available to your character, adding an extra dimension to what otherwise might be a mostly internal development.

Clicking on this link gets you to an outline of the Imperial Divinity faith, to give you an example of one of the Tetran belief systems. It is purposefully written as just an outline so that different characters can approach it in different ways.

Choice

As every NPC can swim through mountains or shape weapons out of ice, it is not your powers that make your character stand out in the world; it is your choices. Imagine that your ancestors were conquered by the Ambrosian Empire, but the same faith that gets you mocked by your rulers also makes you a perfect candidate for joining their secret police force and advising the Emperor’s sister as to who should be promoted and who should be quietly killed off. Do you join them? What advice do you give?

Imagine that you spent your life counting fish in an Utopian river because your duties and opportunities come with your family’s rank, but you hear that the Utopian Empress’ court takes interest and ability into account when giving rank and when assigning duties. Will you accept a lower social rank for a role that was more personally fulfilling? Will you push matters to open civil war, if that is what is required?

Everywhere on the face of Tetra are points of conflict where a band of dedicated heroes can make a huge difference in the future of the world.

One of the wonderful things about the Fate system is how much player choice matters, both in setting up the priorities of the game and in how those priorities are addressed. Fate can start with world creation. Four Corners: Thieves of Sovereignty presents you with the outline of a world, including systems of government and education, as well as a few details on fashion and trade. Clicking on this link gets you to a write-up on one of the three empires. Using the Fate system, the game master and players can start with this framework and choose what issues are important to the sort of game they want to play, and what characters and locations they want to focus on.

The main adaptation I made to the Fate system is to help create hypercapable characters to assure that character choices make a difference. Fate Core includes a long list of skills that you choose from to describe what your character is competent at. Fate Accelerated has a list of six approaches every character can have towards the actions they want to take. For Thieves of Sovereignty, I have chosen a modification of Fate Core that falls between these two examples, with twelve angles of approach a character can take to the situations they face, all twelve appearing on the character sheet at character creation.

When creating your character, you choose what angles of approach your character is best at, and through stunts or character progression may become among the best in the world at. With a party of impressively competent player characters, the stories you tell will be less about whether you succeed at making changes in the world, and more about how you succeed, and what the consequences of your choices are for the entire world.

This Kickstarter is not to get Thieves of Sovereignty written. It is written, and I've modified Fate Core mechanics to turn this world into a game. Pledge $10 CAD or more and you can receive access to a copy right now and have some input into how to make it better.

What I am turning to Kickstarter for is to turn what I have written into the best book it can be. This will involve hiring other professionals, which means paying professional rates.

The $6,000 goal will pay for a professional artist and graphic designer to lay out the book in a professional format, design an attractive and usable character sheet, and to create some unique illustrations, akin to the ones you see on this page. If we achieve higher funding, there is more we can do.

Stretch Goals

At $7,000, you can get a map of the Tetran continent.

At $8,500, you can get elemental symbols for the Ambrosian, Konung, and Utopian imperial religions.

At $10,000, you can get elemental symbols for the Dragonriders, the Seabound, as well as the Cosmic, Ice Guardian, and Saga tribes.

At $11,500, you can get elemental symbols for the Agrar, the Syllabarians, and the Living Tribes.

At $13,000, you can get elemental emblems to represent the remaining faiths and philosophies of Tetra: that of the Wayfarers, the Chosen Tribes, the Harmony, and the Juniper.

At $15,000, the book will be in full colour.

Risks and challenges

Will reaching this goal hit the minimum funds needed for the project?

The funding goal described above was reached in discussion with Elizabeth Porter (http://www.snowbringer.com) who I have been discussing this project with for the past year. She is the person who created the logo and sample art you see on this page, the person I have contracted the rest of the design and illustrations with, and I have been incredibly happy working with her. The more money raised, the more that can be done to make this book the best it can be, but $6000 lets us meet our minimum goals.

Will Kickstarter fees take money required for the project to succeed?

Kickstarter fees include 5% of the total funds raised, plus the fees for processing your payments (3% + $0.20 per pledge over $10). So if we hit our $6,000 goal because 240 of you made and paid a $25 pledge, then $528 would go to Kickstarter. Different combinations get different results, but I’ve taken that into account.

Will the book get finished?

The book is written. You can get access to a playable copy of the game right away. The book will improve through your feedback, through editing, design, and illustrations, but if an unexpected temporal anomaly causes me to be eaten by a velociraptor, you still have the write-up of the setting and the game mechanics needed to play the game right now.
