Ascendant Destiny is an exciting highly flexible tabletop role playing game (RPG) system that focuses on players being able to build and develop any high fantasy character they want. Whether that character is an honourable holy warrior, a spell-flinging sorcerer or a fast-talking goblin trader, Ascendant Destiny has the tools to create and grow this character the way you want.

The Game

Originally inspired as an amalgamation of any fantasy d20 system and most d10 systems, Ascendant Destiny has a high fantasy feel with fantasy races such as elves, dwarves and goblins, medieval combat and powerful magic. Despite this though Ascendant Destiny comes with no fixed setting and is designed to be used as a system for any fantasy RPG setting that you can dream of.

Similar to most d20 systems Ascendant Destiny has 6 primary attributes and uses polyhedral dice to determine the outcome of skill checks and combat rolls. Unlike d20 systems, Ascendant Destiny is skill-based rather than class-based, where characters can choose from 8 trained skills and 8 natural skills called abilities. Essentially players can play whatever they want by buying skills, feats, attributes and spells using experience similar to that in a point buy system!

Aside from Attributes, Trained Skills and Abilities characters can also spend their experience on the following:

  • Feats - A feat is a special ability that a character has that either gives them a new capability or improves an ability that they already have.
  • Education/Professions - These custom skills can be used to capture those very specific skills that you want your character to have that are not covered specifically by another skill.  They can alternatively represent a specialization in an existing skill.
  • Magic and Spells - The ability to cast spells from one or more of the four different types of spell magic, each with many schools/domains to choose from.
  • Divinity - As a character's power increases they start to figure out the secrets of the world, their own importance, and the effect that has on the people around them. The divinity stat allows character to start transcending the mortal limits and develop remarkable powers such as super strength and eternal life.

Despite the high level of customizability, Ascendant Destiny focuses on fairly simple rules and fast play.  Character sheets are just one page (two if you have the notes page) and characters can easily be made in around an hour even if you have no role playing experience.

System Preview

Ascendant Destiny has a flexible easy set of rules.  The story teller can interpret the rules as they see fit for maximum enjoyment and has the final veto on all of the character abilities.  The system includes guidelines for making your own professions/feats/spells etc. and a set of optional advanced rules.

Mechanically, Ascendant Destiny uses a dice pool system based on a character's skills. If the Game Master asks for a skill roll, such as a stealth check, the player will roll a number of d10s (10-sided dice) equal to their skill and count up their final result. There are a number of modifiers that can change the number of dice rolled (such as wound penalties, feats etc).

Combat takes place in rounds where each round takes up approximately 6 seconds of time. Each participant in a fight can make one or more actions per round. These actions can be anything from making an attack to moving, casting spells, and a large range of other things. A character can attempt to make more than one action in a given round, however, the more actions the character attempts, the more difficult each action becomes.

About the Author

My name is Chris. I have had a fascination for high fantasy tabletop RPGs since I first left high school. I first started playing Dungeons and Dragons (3rd edition) and I started writing my own campaigns within months of first being introduced. However, I have always found the class-based system to be too limiting and unrealistic for the kind of campaigns that I write. So I developed my own system that I have been using, play-testing and improving for over 14 years!

My goal is to see other people using this system and enjoying it. I would like to make a professional book that I can be proud of, and to see others out there to get as much enjoyment out of it as my friends and I do.

The artists who are helping me in this journey are amazing and you should definitely check out their work. You can find these artists and all the art I have commissioned so far for the project at the Deviant Art account http://cdfie1.deviantart.com/. You can also check out our webite http://krunchygames.com.au/ascendant-destiny.html

In particular check out Luiz Prado who is responsible for all the fantastic art you see in this kickstarter! http://savedra.deviantart.com/

What other people say about Ascendant Destiny

Here is what others have to say about Ascendant Destiny:

  • "Classless; you can create reasonably unique concepts."
  • "It Classless; it scales well from low to high power levels."
  • "I think you could easily lower or raise the crunch level (the complexity) if you so desired."
  • "Could easily be used with a different campaign setting; not too reliant on specific source material Flexible and versatile, supports highly customisable, rich, and distinct characters who grow into beings of legend throughout a campaign."
  • "Progression system that is class-less, where characters develop in their own way. Many different approaches and styles are supported."
  • "Progression system that is meaningful, with a strong fantasy feel for different skills and approaches including distinct types of magic, fighting styles, and ways to influence and support others. This continues into significant and memorable powers in the late game as characters ascend."
  • "It has an elegant and fast core system that supports creativity and variety if choosing a narrative approach to running the game. But there is enough depth to satisfy those who prefer a more tactical approach, with rewards for character optimisation and numerous optional rules for added detail."
  • "A customisable system, with support for creating your own feats, powers, and specialities, as well as the ability to adapt the system to any setting or genre including beyond classic fantasy."
  • "The unique core dice system combines the advantages of multiple dice (skewing the distribution to the middle rather than the flat distribution of a single die system where every result is equally likely), with the simplicity of a single numerical result for a fast determination of success and failure, while still preserving and celebrating extreme results."
  • "The thing I like about Ascendant Destiny is it's adaptability. If there's something you want you character to be able to do that's not there, you can design your own stuff pretty easily and add it in, without it breaking the game if your sensible. I like it because you can be very creative. I think it's just very adaptable."

The Kickstarter

This kickstarter is for raising funds for and promoting the first edition of this upcoming soon-to-be independently published tabletop RPG book, Ascendant Destiny. This money will help pay for art and professional editing for the book.

Assuming we hit the $5000 goal of the project, here's an estimate of what the budget looks like:

  • $500 - For fees
  • $2500 - For additional artwork
  • $1500 - For editing/design
  • $500 - For promotion

Any stretch goals for this project will go into buying even more art and further promotion for Ascendant Destiny!  If I exceed my goal by $2000 then I'll include an additional chapter: Bestiary!

Further Development

Depending on the success of Ascendant Destiny there are a large number of directions this RPG could go. One of my good friends made a companion guide for the system called Star Core that made it possible to use the system to run Sci-Fi games.

Further possible expansions for Ascendant Destiny include companion books containing more examples of creatures and monsters, more feats (there are already more than 200), more spells, further expansions on theology and paladins, and even an actual setting for Ascendant Destiny. I have developed a setting that I have personally used for all my RPG campaigns. The setting is huge and contains over 4500 years of detailed history.

The Character Sheet!

Here is the character sheet!  I've been keeping it hidden because we were working on it!  This version of the character sheet was created by Kyle Krauter http://www.khepri-creations.com

Risks and challenges

Since the book is already written and all the play-testing and balancing has been completed there are only two main hurdles remaining. These are: completing the illustrations, and editing, formatting and layout.

Most of the illustrations are complete and can be found at my Deviant Art account at http://cdfie1.deviantart.com/. A total of eleven artists have been involved in the project so far. I now have to commission the more detailed and expensive colour illustrations for the front cover and chapter titles. This hurdle requires some money but mostly just comes down to time; the artists need time to complete their work.

I am currently proof-reading the whole book and making minor changes to the rules. I am in contact with an editor who says she is able to make the book more professional. Mostly this hurdle involves time and money. (Edit: Basic edit is now complete, onto the design!)

Since I will be utilising the print-on-demand services of RPGNow, you don’t have to worry about all of the typical supply-chain issues involved with printing and shipping books. Fulfillment of the physical books should be a smooth process.

Of course there is always the chance of delays. Delays may happen because life is unpredictable, but I promise to keep you informed and be responsive to your inquiries.
