About this project

Why Choose Organic, Homemade Baby Food

Choosing organic is choosing to live a healthy life. Organic food is produced without the use of potentially harmful chemicals, pesticides, genetically engineered ingredients or growth hormones from animal-derived products. This is especially important when considering infants and toddlers.

Store bought baby food – including organic brands – has a shelf life of between 18 months and 2 years. This means that food needs to be sterilized.  Sterilized food is heated to a very high temperature to ensure food safety. While necessary for shelf life, sterilization kills vitamins, nutrients, taste, color, and aroma in the process. Homemade baby food retains all of these elements because it is only lightly steamed and not overcooked.  This results in a more exciting eating experience for a baby as he or she is able to taste richer flavors and smell enticing aromas.  Babies who are fed homemade, organic food tend to become adventurous eaters who make healthy choices for themselves because they are consistently introduced to a variety of different tastes and textures.

Additionally, commercially prepared baby food often contains additives and fillers that contain no nutritional value. Such items potentially cause allergic reactions while contributing to hyperactivity. There are no additives, fillers, or empty calories in homemade baby food.

Homemade, Organic Baby Food

  • Organic ingredients grown without harmful pesticides
  • No Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs)
  • No added salt, modified starches or refined sugars
  • No artificial flavors or colors
  • No preservatives, additives or fillers

Homemade baby food is lightly steamed during the cooking process, ensuring all nutrients, flavor, and aroma are kept entact.  Unlike commercial baby food, homemade baby food has a shelf life of 3 days (refrigerated) to 3 weeks (frozen).  This is because no preservatives or sterilization is used to keep the food "good".  This means that the food you provide for your little one is entirely fresh, organic, nutrient-rich and chemical free.

Risks and challenges

In order to complete this project, I will need to purchase fresh produce and meat, food containers (jars and pouches), and coolers for food transportation. Additionally, I will need to create and print food labels for each food container unit as well as individualized invoices per customer.
