Someone Editions is thrilled to be creating a folio of prints, Year of the Quiet Sun. This will be a limited edition run of 62 folios, hand printed, signed and numbered. Year of the Quiet Sun will contain 18 unpublished collages by Ludwig Zeller. Throughout the folio we will print Zeller’s poetry, taken from his vast body of work, in both the Spanish original and in English translation by A.F. Moritz.
For Someone Editions, this is a postmodern bookmaking venture. Combining the fine and literary arts, this project reaches deep into histoire du livre as printed art objects and unites 19th-century etchings and print technology with the precision of modern design processes. The finished object will be an acid-free folio that houses an edition of 18 loose-leaf prints. Each folio will be an art object full of tactility and visual magic, moving printing away from information delivery, thereby reinforcing the enduring importance of material culture.
Pursuing a New Letterpress Tradition To print the folio of prints from the fine line originals using letterpress, Someone Editions will produce digital scans of the images. Using these, we will separate the art into line and ground creating letterpress plates that faithfully capture the soft tonal ground colors in the originals for under printing, and separately, the delicate engraved lines.
The next stage will be the actual letterpress printing of the content, making many successive imprints, one color at a pass, in a limited edition of 62. This process, which requires extreme precision, will employ traditional and contemporary methods and materials to ensure maximum authenticity and accuracy.
The acid free folio, designed to cover, protect, and preserve the limited edition fine art prints will be an object of art in its own right, as well as containing the carefully re-rendered works of visual art.Throughout the folio, Zeller’s poetry will be printed next to each image, in both English translation by A.F. Moritz, and the original Spanish. All the elements of the folios will be produced to exceed Someone’s own demanding reproduction standards, using highest quality papers and materials to ensure their viability for collectors of print, art, and ephemera.
This project is the result of decades of passion and dedication to the literary and fine arts. We welcome you to join us in celebrating Zeller's compelling creations at the peak of his career, and Someone Edition’s building of an all-new letterpress tradition.
"Surrealism persists, because it is necessary." - Ludwig Zeller
Ludwig Zeller is renowned as a poet and artist. His contribution is unique and irreplaceable to Spanish-language poetry and international Surrealism. Zeller has published 40 poetry collections, many poetry chapbooks and five books of collages.
Someone produces extraordinary limited editions, creating new aspects of print culture
There is a deep sympathy between Zeller's collages and Someone's printing. The original etchings that Zeller uses date from the same era of printing technology as our in-house 19th Century equipment. Here, we share the same sensibility of hand-made quality and fine craft.
The Someone Editions team, headed up by Deborah Barnett and Beatriz Hausner, includes artists, designers, letterpress printers, and bookmakers. Creating exquisite design, Someone’s techniques merge combine digital design technologies with carefully hand-set type and letterpress printing, on original 100-year-old equipment.
What will the money be used for?
Making and printing folios by hand is exacting and time-consuming. With your patronage, you will have funded the purchase of the finest archival quality paper, printing plates, and the collaborative energies of Someone’s team of fine printers, designers, editors, and artists.
Kickstarter is all-or-nothing funding: this means that if we don’t raise $9500 in 60 days we won’t be able to create this remarkable hand-printed folio of Ludwig Zeller's work.
Since this is a limited edition, there will be only 36 copies of the complete folio created, ten of which include original art by Zeller. Get them while you can! Kickstarter backers will receive early bird discounts on the price of the individual prints and full folios.
You can also receive rewards including original letterpress printed books, broadsides, and posters, all featuring art and poetry by the same artists involved in Year of the Quiet Sun.
If you want to receive more than one reward, add the values of your choices together, pledge the total for an individual piece though it's more than the value of that one entry, and let us know at someone.ca the other picks you'd like included in your reward.

Risks and challenges
There's a risk that people will be dissatisfied with how small an edition we are making. We might make a different edition, a SECOND edition, created with different properties and for a wider audience, if there is a very high demand.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
