Make 100: The Grand Tour - 200 Travel Photographs Restored
Take your pick from 200 rare travel photographs from 1870-1930 that I will restore to crisp perfection.....or select them all!
What is The Grand Tour about?
Relive a bygone age of discovery and romance. Before the age of jet-travel and Eurorail, intrepid men and women explored the four-corners of the world via sailing ships, ocean liners, trains such as the Orient Express and the Trans-Siberian Railway, or via bicycle, camel, donkey, or foot.
This was an era when traveling the world was a thrilling new possibility for those with the resources, time, and pluck to take those first steps outside of their home. Few individuals had even seen photographs of such exotic places as Bali, Kenya, or Brazil and yet were brave enough to embark on extended journeys to places unknown.
This campaign is a celebration of that era.
Two-hundred ( 200 ) rare travel images from archives around the world have been selected and will be brought back to their original splendor by being digitally restored to high-definition sharpness. You will be the recipient of these newly-restored photos and can enjoy them in digital format or by taking your pick with an 8x10" print.
Last year, during Kickstarter's Make 100 initiative I chose to unearth 100 rarely-seen historic images for a restoration project entitled "The Past in Focus". The support I received from the Kickstarter community was tremendous and humbling, too. Little did I realize that so many other people were interested in seeing these rare images digitally restored!
This year, I am continuing the restoration work with this new endeavor - The Grand Tour. The Grand Tour is your passport to experiencing the romance, elegance, and adventure that enthralled passengers of the golden age of travel. Take a journey back in time along with me!
What Kind of Images Are Being Restored?
The pyramids of Egypt, ancient ruins, Turkish mosques, the bustling Riviera, snow-capped temples of Japan, the Grand Canyon, the rushing falls of Niagara, ooh-la-la Paris..... you'll see all the locations that travel agencies such as Cook's Tours would have offered in the late-1800s.
At the conclusion of the campaign, all 200 of the restored images from "The Grand Tour" will be available for viewing online and you can then make your pick of which image you want to frame for your home. Enjoy a mystery? I can surprise you with a print!
If you can't decide which photo you would like to own, then you can own them all - The Grand Tour Image Collection will include all 200 images fully-restored as downloadable hi-res jpegs ( 1200-5800px ) so you can make 5x7", 8x10", or 16x20" and larger prints yourself.
The majority of these images will be unearthed from the largest and most magnificent photo collection in America - the Library of Congress - but I will peruse libraries from the far corners of the world as well... libraries such as the Rijksmuseum, the National Maritime Archives of Australia, The J. Paul Getty Museum, and The British Library.
Libraries make it a practice to scan photographs and then upload them to their archives untouched and unrestored. Most need color correction, sharpening, and a great deal of spot cleaning to bring them to vibrant life again. It takes me anywhere from 10-45 minutes to clean and restore each photo. If "The Grand Tour" gets successfully funded, I'll be taking time off from my small business to focus on the digital restoration of these 200 images.
The original image scans will come from a variety of different photo types: albumen prints, glass plate negatives, photographic prints, stereoviews, photochroms and autochroms.
My sister and I operate a home-based photo business, so making beautiful photographs is our specialty. All 8"x10" photographs will be printed and cut by hand in our home studio. They will be printed on Canon premium luster photo paper with Chromalife inks ( 150+ year lifespan ). All photos are archival so you'll have a print that one day will be as old as the image printed on it!
THE GRAND TOUR COLLECTION
This grand image collection contains all 200 photographs restored for this project. Each image is in JPEG format at 300dpi, ranging in size from 2500-5500 pixels ( 1.5-6mb each ). Since this makes for a very heavy file, they will be zipped up neatly in one downloadable .zip file. Since the project is not completed yet, I don't know what the full size of this zip would be, but make sure you have space on your computer!
What could you do with these files? Just about anything you like. Almost all of the photographs are in the public domain meaning you are free to be as creative with them as you like. The few that are licensed as Creative Commons or Attributive will be marked as such. You could use the photos for a book project, make albums with them, frame them as wall art, or if you want to open up your own photography gallery and sell prints, you could do that, too!
The collection will also include a listing of with each photo's title, the photographer ( if available ), date, and source ( this is especially useful if you want to browse more photos on your own! ).
THE PAST IN FOCUS - SECOND EDITION
The second edition of The Past in Focus was completed last July but only offered as a pre-order to those who backed the first Make 100 project. Now it is available for everyone!
This collection contains 100 rare historic photographs dating from 1851-1946 and, unlike the first edition of The Past in Focus, each digital file is sent in its largest hi-res size so you can make prints for yourself. All images are in the public domain. This, too, will be sent as one downloadable large .zip file containing all one hundred individual JPEGS.
Here is a tiny sample of some of the photographs included in this edition:
SAILS & SPARS COLLECTION
This bonus set of 25 photographs includes images of yachts, three-masted sailing ships, steamers and ocean liners dating from 1870-1930. All images are fully-restored hi-res jpegs sent in one downloadable .zip file.
THE BONUS SETS
Take a peek at my first Kickstarter campaign - The Past in Focus - and you will see that as the campaign grew in size more and more photos were added onto it. These "bonus" images amounted to over 175 photos. With The Grand Voyager you will be receiving all of these bonus sets as well. Pretty neat, huh?

Risks and challenges
The Past in Focus Second Edition and the Sails & Spars image collection have both been already completed, so no risk there. Work on The Grand Tour has already begun so not much risk there either. I'm backing up all of the photos on multiple drives so I don't lose them all during a power surge, and the only other risk I can think of is that your print may get lost in the mail....but if that happens, just send me an email and I'll mail you a replacement. This isn't a very risky project, is it?Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
