Matchmaker is an interactive card game for 3 to 6 players that brings together characters from Jane Austen's novels - the heroes and heroines, the scoundrels and schemers, the downtrodden and the desperate - all of them looking for one thing: marriage.
As a matchmaker, you must find the best connections for your ladies and gentlemen. Sometimes they’ll marry for money, sometimes for love. Wealth will give you an advantage over your rivals but you must find lasting happiness to win. Beware of charmers who offer nothing but a smile, and look out for superior characters like Mr Darcy, who possess wealth and virtue.
You don't have to be familiar with Jane Austen's novels to enjoy the game, but if you are a fan, you're sure to enjoy recreating your favourite romantic adventures. Of course you can rewrite the stories entirely, as characters cross over from the pages of their novels. Imagine Mr Darcy proposing to Emma Woodhouse or the scandalous Willoughby eloping with Fanny Price!
In Matchmaker, love is always on the cards.
Here are some player reviews of the classic edition from around the world...
I've been designing games for the past 15 years, working with companies such as Games Workshop, Hasbro and Sony. My most recent projects include Lewis Carroll's Puzzles in Wonderland (Carlton Books) and Spy or Die Trying (Warm Acre Games). I developed a love of Jane Austen's novels while living in Hampshire, not very far from where she grew up. After reading her six best-known works, I was inspired to design a game that captured the subtle machinations of Regency-era romance.
Matchmaker was released last year in its classic format (with silhouettes representing the characters). It had always been my intention to create a fully-illustrated edition which would be both an enjoyable card game and an attractive collectable item for Jane Austen fans. My first attempt to realize this goal was unsuccessful, primarily because I chose a rather costly approach (full-colour illustrations at £200 per card) and possibly because there were four other Jane Austen projects running Kickstarter campaigns at the same time.
With time to reflect and thanks to the proceeds collected from the classic edition, I have commissioned artist Emily Hare to illustrate all 52 character cards.
This Kickstarter is to fund a professional printing from renowned playing card manufacturers Carta Mundi. If the goal is reached, I will do everything possible to have the game delivered to you in time for Christmas.
£5 BENEFACTOR - you will receive a pdf of Jane Austen's Matchmaker to print and play.
£10 GREETINGS - a set of beautiful greetings cards depicting couples from the six novels.
£15 MATCHMAKER - you will receive a copy of Jane Austen's Matchmaker. Please add £15 for each additional copy required (£20 for orders outside of the UK)
£25 MATCHMAKER & GREETINGS - a set of beautiful greetings cards depicting couples from the six novels. You will also receive 'Matchmaker'.
£100 RETAIL PICNIC - You will receive 10 copies of Jane Austen's Matchmaker plus 20 x A5 promotional flyers.
£250 YOUR PERFECT MATCH - a double profile portrait of you and your partner/spouse/soulmate/bestie designed and signed by our illustrator Emily Hare. You will need to provide good quality photos of both subjects in profile. You will also receive 'Matchmaker'.
This will fund a larger print run of the game. Not the most exciting stretch goal I grant you, but it will enable us to distribute Matchmaker world wide.
