An outdoor exhibition of photographs of Newburgh, NY; the overlooked city on the Hudson River, where hope remains.

We are planning an outdoor exhibition of mural size prints, 4ft by 6ft, of citizens of Newburgh, NY. My subjects are people I encountered during the last 16 years on the streets of this beautiful but neglected city. The photographs will be displayed on the side of The Ritz Theater in the heart of downtown Newburgh. The exhibition will run from July 14 through October 31, 2012.

The outdoor display of the photographs will allow all the citizens of Newburgh constant access to them. The display will be organized by the Ann Street Gallery and will coincide with the publication of the photographs by W. W. Norton.

Newburgh is the historic city on the Hudson River with more than 55% African American population in its downtown area. Since the mid-1950s, when urban renewal began and then quickly failed, the city has been overlooked and ignored. For the past fifteen years I have been taking portraits of those who came my way as I walked around, together with the fine Victorian architecture that remains. Please click here to view more Newburgh photographs.

In this video below, we asked people what they thought the effect the exhibition would have on Newburgh's citizenry and relations with the world outside.

I am asking for contributions to pay for the printing, mounting and installation of the work. This is a re-launch of the project at a reduced goal. It has been made possible by the generosity and support of Peter Bynum who is lending me his printer, together with volunteers to help with the fabrication.

Our goal is now $4000.00. Additional funds raised beyond our pledged goal will be used to pay volunteers and add another row of portraits.

The Ritz Theater is an affiliate of Safe Harbors of the Hudson, a not-for-profit organization whose mission is transforming lives and building communities through housing and the arts. They are collaborating with the exhibition and will help us by donating space to print and mount the photographs, and arranging for  people interested in the fabrication to visit and assist.

I would like to thank the following people for their help: John Benjamin, Kim Connor, David Dasch, Emily Dupree, John Froats, Michael Green, Nick Groombridge, Tricia Haggerty-Wenz, Caroline Kasterine, Emily Lansbury, James Mairs, Earle Mack, Terry Quinn, Richard Saunders, Lisa Silverstein, Virginia Walsh, Carole Wolf, Margaret Warren.

A very special thank you to my subjects for their willingness and patience.
