A prototype is a preliminary model of something. Projects that offer physical products need to show backers documentation of a working prototype. This gallery features photos, videos, and other visual documentation that will give backers a sense of what’s been accomplished so far and what’s left to do. Though the development process can vary for each project, these are the stages we typically see:
Proof of Concept
Explorations that test ideas and functionality.
Demonstrates the functionality of the final product, but looks different.
Looks like the final product, but is not functional.
Appearance and function match the final product, but is made with different manufacturing methods.
Appearance, function, and manufacturing methods match the final product.
Since most of us today suffer from a lack of space in our homes, the Shrinkable Sofa provides the ideal solution by expanding and shrinking as needed, in just a few moves and a few seconds. This function can be applied to various designs and furniture styles. The purpose of this sofa is to help save space in your home, without compromising on looks.
Context: Which piece of furniture takes up most of your living room space? Your sofa. But does it have to be that way? Not with the Shrinkable Sofa that can turn into a love-seat or an armchair depending on your needs.
Scenario 1: You are comfortably seated in your armchair, waiting for the game to begin.
Ding - dong: Unexpected guest arrives. No seats? No problem. Your comfortable armchair knows just the right thing to do. Expand: from armchair to love-seat. In seconds. There, you and your buddy can now watch the game together.
Ding - Dong again: Oops, you forgot your neighbor is a fan too. Thinking of what to do? Expand some more: from love-seat to a full 3-seat couch, again in a matter of seconds. Let the game begin!
Game over: Your guests leave. They leave you with a messy living room. But your sofa knows just the right thing to do. Shrink in a blink! Before your people can even get to their cars, your living room has gained back its space. The Shrinkable Sofa is now an armchair again, allowing for fast clean-up.
Scenario 2: You want to host a dance party. But you have a sofa that takes up a lot of space in your living room. Should you maybe rent a hall? Wait! With the Shrinkable Sofa, your problem becomes no problem. And you can dance at no expense!
Scenario 3: Your dining room is nicely decorated with an expandable table and 4 chairs. Your guests arrive. Expand the table and....the chairs! You had almost forgotten that you can fit 12 people on your amazing Shrinkable Sofa, chair-styled this time!
So any other advantages? Quite a few:
Great looks: leather, fabric, hard or soft
A 3-in-1 concept: you choose what you use - sofa, love-seat or armchair
Fun to move around: a sofa shrunk to the size of a chair is a lot easier to move. No more fighting to push it up and down the stairs
Save on shipping costs: certain designs can be shipped via FedEx; a sofa in a box doesn't require 2 people to carry or a pick-up truck to transport. And it arrives fully assembled
Storage space when you move: you need a smaller truck (I moved my second prototype in my hatchback, it's the only 3-place sofa of which I know that can be transported in a hatchback.)
SO WHY NOT THINK SHRINK?
TO CONVINCE YOU, HERE'S WHERE WE'RE COMING FROM:
I started with a prototype to show that this idea works. The wooden chair can expand from 1 to 5 places and anything in between in seconds, it's very easy to use, with all the seats being at the same level. With minor modifications, nice curved plywood, this could be your next dining room chair set.
I built an upholstered prototype, to show how versatile this idea is. I know the design doesn't look like much, but for my first ever built sofa, I was quite proud of it.
I managed to work with a furniture company and built a 3rd prototype, closer to a production form. This is not a set, but a single piece of furniture that you can collapse or expand into whatever furniture you need in seconds. Gone are the days when you had to buy a piece of furniture and you were stuck with it for years. Now you can have a 3 - in - 1.
For a fully comfortable sofa, this prototype has a 4'' foam cushion and is just as comfortable as a regular sofa or armchair. You cannot tell the difference between this Shrinkable Sofa and a static or a reclining sofa. You can have it as a comfy armchair, when you need the space, but it can sit 3 adults when expanded.
WHERE WE'RE GOING:
This is a new function in furniture and it takes time and money to develop into a ready-for-production item.
I know how to adapt this function to an existing design, but I need a manufacturer's expertise to build it and to upholster it.
In order to be able to bring the Shrinkable Sofa to you, I need to have:
a fully-functional design
the bill of materials
the cost of labour time
a manufacturing price
Design: adapt the "Shrinkable" function to a design. That means:
reinforce the central position to support the sides
integrate the slides
integrate the drawer for cushions
design the mechanism to hold the cushions in place
design the locking mechanism for the slides
design the sides with integrated slides.
frames, wood or metal
central position that holds everything together
sides, depending on configuration (one or more, armless or with arm)
drawer for cushions
mechanical slides for sides
locking mechanism for sides
springs for comfort
textile, leather or other materials
Manufacturing costs involved:
Cost of time to cut all the parts
Cost of time to assemble all the parts
Cost of time to upholster all the parts
Help me help you regain your space!
I need your help to choose a final design, a price range and your support to fund the manufacturing of a full production-ready prototype, with all the specifications and all the details ironed out.
2- Shrinking sofa, 3-in-1, modern design, sits 3 adults
3- Love seat, 2-in-1, more comfortable, sits 3 adults, thick cushions
This idea can be applied to multiple designs, let me know if you have interesting proposals and I'll add them to the option list to be voted by you. A voting page will allow the backers to vote on the final design.
