Welcome to the Sister Continents, an Epic Fantasy setting with its genesis dating back to 1984!
Trail of Pyres is the sequel to Eve of Snows, an Amazon #1 Best Selling Epic Fantasy in the US, UK, Canada, and Australia, as well as hitting #2 in the Kobo Canada Epic Fantasy Chart. Eve of Snows recently enjoyed its first International Bookbub promotion, driving its sales to #1 (multiple categories) in three countries for a second time, and into the top few hundred in sales in the overall Kindle Store. Eve of Snows was followed by the release of Meliu, Book 1.5, a novella which bridges the story of the character Meliu into Trail of Pyres.
Eve of Snows has been critically well received by Kirkus Reviews and readers alike, with world building and writing most often compared to Robert Jordan & George R.R. Martin, while other mentions have been J.R.R. Tolkien, Brandon Sanderson, Terry Brooks, and Joe Abercrombie. As the author, I hesitate to make such comparisons, but I will accept the honors when I receive them. Several of the most vocal fans of Eve of Snows are hard core fans of Jordan's Wheel of Time. The reality is, whatever depth Eve of Snows has in world building, it’s a mere ripple in the greater ocean of the world’s story.
I am raising funds for Trail of Pyres (and the Sundering the Gods Saga) for several reasons, first and foremost to help pay for the cover of Trail of Pyres. Additional funds beyond the Kickstarter base goal will be utilized for an extra professional editing pass, audiobook funding, hardcover funding, book trailer, poster art, and professional mapping services. Funds will also reload the promotional war chest, from a potential Bookbub Promo in the US, to stocking hard covers for personal appearances, to ad campaigns on Amazon, Facebook, and other online advertising resources.
Most of these things will happen regardless of Kickstarter success, BUT the more money raised here the more time I can dedicate to getting the books written, which is what readers (and the author!) really want.

Maximillian Breed narrated Eve of Snows, and will continue throughout the series.
Though the novel is dense in plot and characters, debut novelist Rice maintains a surprisingly sharp focus... The final act boosts the action, introduces menaces, and involves a few shocking revelations... Brimming with well-defined details and characters; augmented by bountiful enthusiasm and spirit. - Kirkus Reviews (Full Review)

Characters are efficiently imbued with rich personalities, places are rendered with a blend of stark realism and underlying power. - Amazon Reviewer
As an avid fan of the fantasy genre from Tolkien to Brooks this book was a fantastic surprise from a new author. Slow, purposeful and in depth character development pulls you in and prevents you from being able to put this book down. - Amazon Reviewer
Lots of action and adventure. A great and exciting read. - Amazon Reviewer

Having lived in his own world for many years, LJ Rice decided he might as well share that world with folks otherwise trapped in reality, and got serious about writing. He has made enough wine to no longer enjoy wine. He has not eaten enough steak or pizza to no longer enjoy steak or pizza, but is working on it. Challenges are good, he maintains.
Having managed to graduate high school only rarely turning in homework, he moved on to a university to find it even more forgiving of lax study skills. He celebrated with copious amounts of beer. With scant few memories of either educational facility or anything they reputedly taught him, he refuses to confirm or deny their usefulness. Probably because he is wishy-washy, but I'm not sure of that. 98% sure... or maybe only 50%. Hell if I know.
His proudest success in life does, however, harken back to high school. In geometry class a teacher set a remarkable challenge by saying (paraphrased) "In ten years you might forget everything you ever learned in class, but you will not forget..." Taunted by this teacher's arrogance, LJ Rice managed to not only forget what it was he learned, but the name of it too. And for good measure, the name of the teacher. But not the challenge itself. That would've made the exercise of forgetfulness pointless. To pile on insult to injury, he does remember the name of a spell from the video game Wizardry which he played often during this time: Tiltowait. Take that, geometry!
Born and raised in the midwest, US of A, LJ Rice has a lovely wife and two beautiful daughters, the names and birthdays of whom he remembers most of the time. Plus, two dogs, an unknown number of chickens (always in flux with predators and other natural causes), and a gosling he assumes will someday be a goose who lays non-golden eggs... stupid goose anyhow.
Risks and challenges
This is a minimal risk project, with Books 1 & 1.5 already available, and Trail of Pyres not far from release. Rewards involving books 2.5, 3, and the longer term project of A Kingdom for Sinners and Saints, involve a little more risk, because I could be struck by an asteroid or killed by ninja at any given time. Other than my untimely demise or impairment, nothing should prevent their completion. However, the more money the Kickstarter raises the quicker releases will come as my time is freed up. My projection for release time is 2-4 months for smaller books (like Meliu & Solineus) and 6-9 months for full epic novels. If books begin to stretch into the 750+ page range, this could also change. However, my intent is to keep most novels in the 140-160k word count area, or 450-600 trade 6"x9" paperback pages.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
