An Inner Place That Has No Place is an evening-length performance work
created in 2012 by Shannon Stewart in collaboration with filmmaker Adam Sekuler, composer Jeff Huston, and performers Meredith Horiuchi, Mary Margaret Moore, Aaron Swartzman, Rosa Vissers, and David Wolbrecht. It is a culminating work in a two-year exploration of memory and memory loss at the personal, corporal, and societal levels.
An Inner Place That Has No Place was selected by a Seattle and Philadelphia panel of artists and programmers to be part of the SCUBA National Touring Network in 2013.
We are asking for your support in remounting An Inner Place That Has No Place in order to bring it to Philadelphia and perform it again in Seattle. We are honored to represent Seattle and excited to learn from being in front of a new audience. Your contribution goes directly to buying plane tickets, rehearsal space, and costume supplies. IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO MAKE A DONATION IN SOME OTHER WAY please email me: shannonkstewart(at)gmail.com.
More About The Work
An Inner Place That Has No Place is the culminating piece in a suite of work called the memory (loss) bank. The memory (loss) bank is a container for the ephemeral, ever shifting, cinematic, mythic collections of time that we accumulate in our bodies, buildings and communities. It started with a common experience of watching a loved one advance through the stages of dementia, an experience that is shared by many and has created an onslaught of anxiety and confusion about identity, recognition, and interdependence in today’s culture. It took us through a process of research, experimentation and collaboration to create a series of works about memory and memory loss.
Through a year’s process that included site specific rehearsals, films, open public salons, and efforts to bring our work to intersections of historic events taking place at the time we worked together to formulate a piece in which characters morphing in ages and identities create a repeating collection of scenes, commenting on the illusive nature of memory and the obsessive nature with which we cling to it.
Video that Adam created interfaces throughout the piece and original music composition was created by Jeff Huston. Our original lighting designer Jessica Trundy created a beautiful framework to support the performers and video.
The creation of An Inner Place That Has No Place was supported by 4Culture, the Seattle Office of Arts and Cultural Affairs and dozens of individual donors.

In order to participate we need to revise the work down to half its length and fly our 8-person cast and crew Philadelphia and then back for a show in Seattle at Velocity Dance Center. We are also bringing in costume designer Rachel Ravitch to create new costumes for the piece, since it is something that fell out of budget in the first iterations.
In order to buy plane tickets and cover our most basic travel and supply costs, we need to raise $5,500 this month. Touring support from Philadelphia Dance Projects and Velocity Dance Center gets us off the ground but we have a way to go.
