Folks,

It has been another fun sprint for us here at CSE. Even though Tyler had the plague and we had a fair amount of lost time among the team, they came through with an awesome sprint. Our only misses were on low-priority items and on two of them, our misses were due to making a decision that will help us in the long term. We also had a couple of nice bonus items and I can say, without reservation, that we ended the week strongly. The full update can be found on our website here.

Complete missed tasks from last sprint

  • Working on infrastructure to support rendering in the editor, paperdoll. views, GM and stats views, and other non-gameplay contexts. Completed.
  • Improving prediction and smoothing for character movement. Completed.
  • Make stats available via JSON – Completed.
  • Finished real logins – Completed.
  • Evaluation of third party software for possible inclusion in game. Miss - 50% completed.

  • BONUS – New team member working with us on update and redo of the website. This slowed down the two items above but will result in a better website in both the short and long term.

Not bad eh? It was a great sprint and wait till you see some of the things Michelle and Sandra put together for the first round of armor concept work. Very proud of what they did with limited time. I know our Founders will be as well (except for those few who might, for some misguided reason, want Camelot Unchained to look like WoW) when they see the concept work for the armor system.

  • Finish next race Becoming tale. Note: At this rate this Becoming tale is rapidly transforming into “The Never, ever, ever ending Becoming Tale.” ☺

That’s the list for the next sprint. With the Thanksgiving holiday coming up here next week, we will extend out this sprint for an additional week. As you can see, it has lots of good stuff with more of the items being obviously geared to the opening of IT in January than in other sprints. 

 FYI, for those who haven’t seen it yet, I did another interview with Gary over at GAMEBREAKER TV. Lots of goodies in the interview, including a bit about my first trip ever to the Middle East this past summer. Here’s the link. I think it’s a pretty interesting listen and my trip to that unnamed country was one of the highlights of my career. I met some really intriguing people and the outcome, and my thought process, should offer a lot of insight into how seriously I’m treating my personal commitment to Camelot Unchained, our studio and our Founders.

Afternoon Update - November 14th 2013

Folks,

Today’s update is to announce a bit of news that won’t come as a surprise to anyone who has joined us on our forums. Even though we are still in pre-production, we have a very active Community and an integral part of that has been the presence of our Founders, regardless of country, on our forums. When we started this campaign I was quite clear that, unlike in the past, our European players would not be forced apart from our North American players. Further, I promised that we were not going to license this game to anybody in Europe and that we were going to make a great effort to include our European counterparts at all stages of development. This message was conveyed directly by me but also through the efforts of two fine gentlemen, Charles and Sascha, who were working with us at the time. I’m happy to announce that as part of our ongoing effort to keep our communities part of one Community, that Charles and Sascha are officially part of the CSE family. They will continue to work with us as they have for several months as, at a minimum, our European Community Manager and Forums Moderators. They have done a great job so far and we look forward to our continued relationship over the next two+ years. Without further ado, here are Charles and Sascha in their own words.

My name is Charles, I’m a French guy living in Madrid, being as some of you may know, a recent immensely happy daddy.

I’m a programmer / web security consultant for a French company – and well, I just love spending my time coding (from C++ stuff to jQuery plugin dev.)

I’ve been playing MMOs since AO / EQ – and been through a lot of them during the years. I played DAoC in the beginning on EU servers, and later on US servers. I mostly play healers / support – because I like to be blamed all the time. In DAoC I had a shaman / healer on mid, and a *cool* druid on hib.

I’ve also been playing a lot of other genres, from FPS with Counter Strike (where is my 1.3 valve?) to some strategy games (War III / Starcraft, at which, honestly, i sucked).

I really enjoy managing the French community since the beginning of the KS campaign, and a lot of French users have been speaking to me through the Facebook page and/or Twitter. I’m really looking forward to some more enjoyment here in the next few weeks/years, with all of our nice users (not only the French ones of course!), and then switch on to the battlefields and fight together in joy.

My name is Sascha, I am thirty years old and from Germany. I just recently moved to Berlin with my wife. I have a background as web programmer, and I’m currently finishing my Master of Arts with a Major in History and a Minor in German at the University of Southern Denmark. I know, its an odd combination for a background story. I have heard that one before I joined the online world fourteen years ago and since then I’ve been part of a whole lot of different communities, playing genres like RTS, FPS, MMO or TCG. As for many others here, it was Dark Age of Camelot that really made me fall in love with MMORPGs. It obviously didn’t take me very long to get hooked on Camelot Unchained with such a past.

The community of an online game is, in my opinion, really what makes the difference and it has a great impact on the success or failure of a game. So as the German Community Manager I’m really looking forward to share in the excitement of the development with you and I hope for an amazing time after launch for all of us.

Ich bin vor vierzehn Jahren ein Teil der Online Welt geworden und war seitdem Mitglied einer Vielzahl an verschiedenen Communities und Genres, wie zum Beispiel RTS, FPS, MMO oder TCG. Wie für viele andere hier, war es Dark Age of Camelot, was mich wirklich in die Welt der MMORPGs gezogen hat. Mit so einer Vergangenheit, dauerte es natürlich nicht lange, bis ich auch von Camelot Unchained völlig begeistert war.

Die Community eines Online-Games ist es, was, meiner Meinung nach, wirklich den Unterschied ausmacht und einen großen Einfluss auf den Erfolg oder Misserfolg eines Spiels hat. Als deutscher Community Manager freue ich mich darauf die Aufregung der Entwicklung mit euch zu teilen und hoffe auf eine unglaubliche Zeit für uns alle nach dem Launch.

Morning Update - November 11th 2013

Folks,

First, a nod, bow and respect to all the Veterans out there (including one who is part of our team) who might be reading this. Growing up, my father, who immigrated to the US after WWII, used to tell us about his time serving in a MASH unit. He was proud to be a citizen of this country and of his service to it. Those who serve our/their country deserve our respect.

Second, today’s update will be a Becoming™ tale for the next race of the Tuatha Dé Danann. For those Dark Age of Camelot™ fans or other folks that had been hoping that we would reveal a short, humanoid race as our next TDD race. Well, all I have to say is, wish granted. However, as always, be careful what you wish for. ☺  

Like the story of the Phouka, it is not as dark as some of the other ones I’ve written but this story too fits the race quite nicely and it certainly isn’t without its bit of darkness and loss as befits a Becoming tale.  The full update can be found on our website here.

That’s it for today. I hope you liked the story and our take on a classic being from literature, films and games. As usual, Sandra and Michelle did a great job on bringing these beings to life without relying on some really bad stereotypes types of leprechauns.

Sornin asked: Many MMORPGs let guilds create heraldry and apply it to tabards and cloaks. Is there a chance of expanding this to other equipment, like shields?
 

Quite possibly so. We love the idea of realm and guild pride as well as unique character customization. So there is a chance you will see guild emblems on more than just cloaks. As Mark has said many times, the key is the effect on performance. It may seem trivial, yet when you are looking to have large-scale battles, every little bit helps.

Sornin also asked: What do you envision the first round of internal testing to look like?

Think Smackhammer with a 60,000 mile tune-up. Runs smoother, but you couldn't say quite why. Plenty of non-visually glamorous improvements. We warned folks, IT is necessary, but perhaps not all that exciting. The main goal of our first IT testing is to see how the new server performs with a lot of living, breathing players beating on each other with sticks.

Doulos asked: Are their any thoughts on an in game cash shop? And what kinds of things you might sell there such as pets? Absolutely, Mark has a lot of thoughts on in-game cash shops within a subscription game (even if the price is below average). Unfortunately, none of them are suitable for printing here. I shall summarize for you though, “BLEEP, and BLEEPING, BLEEEEEPITY BLEEEP!” :)

Phyl asked: any chance for a time lapse of your VERY talented artist's creations? I love watching these things.

So do we! When I was a kid I sat glued to the TV watching Bob Ross paint for hours :) There is more chance of this for post-launch artwork. Now that we are funded, well, we have a game to make! The artists are most often hard at work on things that aren't yet revealed. This is not to say it won't happen. We know how much you guys love it. As I mentioned in the previous PtV, we may livestream for our PayPal relaunch, so perhaps we can work some in then.

Dazed asked: Will there be blood spatter during combat?

Not bloody likely. Sorry, sorry, couldn't resist. It's not that we are particularly for or against it, but we are hyper focused on performance here. While things like spell effects are needed, blood spatter is not and therefore would be an unnecessary load on servers. However it's possible that there may be a call for a bleed animation in response to a certain attack/spell. There’s also the issue with blood/gore in some EU countries so we want to be careful here.

Centrile asked: Will crafters have any defensive/offensive abilities to allow them to run away like big girls rather than being a free kill?

There are no 'free' lunches, and there shall be no 'free' kills! Crafters will have some escape and/or defense mechanisms. We want our crafters to be busy, and part of that means having them in the field at times. By the way, boys run too, I've made them do so more than once, in game of course...

Fanglo asked: Will /dance and other silly emotes make it into the game?

So although MJ is weary of /dance himself (can we blame the fella?), it's likely we will have a variety of emotes to allow characters to express themselves.

Leiferon asked: I love making gear templates for different classes. It's fun when there are many important stats (including resists). Unique items and drops ensure that very few people ever have the same exact gear on. How will Camelot Unchained encourage unique template builds?

Since there won’t be gear drops in our game, all the gear must come from our crafters. They will have the ability to make really powerful, diverse and unique items. Those looking for a WoW (or even DAoC) style system where item bonuses are the key to success (and for the popularity of certain items) will find that this won’t be the case. Gear from our crafters will be useful, though not crucial, in helping the wearer. Mark has spoken about avoiding some of the typical MMO tropes when it comes to gear. He points out that gear is generally used by designers as a carrot to keep players playing (and paying). We won’t rely on such things in Camelot Unchained.

Saicon asked: Any plans for CSE to attend any game exhibitions like Gamescom or PAX? If not next year maybe 2015?

Sure thing! Although, that is not in the budget at present. We need to focus on making a great game and then we can consider hosting an exhibition at a convention closer to launch.

Oakblade asked: Will you put stuff in the game that has minority support in the forms if you feel there is a good reason?

Only a small minority of our Founders are, as expected, regular participants on the forums. So the question becomes whether we would put something in the game if there were internal support for it, even if some or most of the people on the forums state that they are against it. The answer is yes. Our job is to make a great game. Even if some of our Founders don’t agree with the decision, we’ll implement something if we believe it is in the best interest of the game.

Tumtumm asked: How are your overall goals progressing and do you think that internal testing will still be around same time estimated before?

Our goals are progressing well and we do hope to keep our January 2014 schedule for internal testing.

Tarsir asked: Can you comment at all on bringing active posters into Internal Testing as was mentioned in the Kickstarter campaign? How many additional people will you bring in? Will they come in the first wave, or subsequent waves? etc.

While we can't say if this will happen for the first wave of internal testing, it will happen. As to how many, that will depend on need. Certain things we test will require a mass of willing bodies, so when we get to that stage we will be looking to our active posters for their support.

Hellraise asked: Have you ever tasted Phooka meat? Or horse meat as the nearest comparable thing?

Umm, clearly you've never tried to catch a Phouka! All you end up 'catching' are flailing hooves in your teeth. We won't eat horse meat, for personal reasons. My personal reason is that their noses are sooo soft.

Jagp asked: Can we expect any new members to CSE in the near future?

Yup! We are working on it. We are interviewing some promising programming candidates at the moment. We still need to add a lot of new talent to our merry band, so if you know any programmers who want a shot at working on a very cool project and don’t mind being underpaid for their efforts (at least until the game ships), let them know about us!

Morning Update - November 8th 2013

Folks,

It is time for another “end of sprint” update. Unfortunately, this sprint was not as successful as the last one. Due to illness and travel, a number of items either were not fully completed or in a couple of cases, didn’t get started. Life, as always, has its own plans. I have always been honest with the Community regardless of whether it is good news or bad news so expect these little hiccups over the next two years. Now, we still had a good sprint but it wasn’t as good as the last one. Here is the breakdown:

  • Working on infrastructure to support rendering in the editor, paperdoll views, GM and stats views, and other non-gameplay contexts. Miss. While we have made a lot of progress on it, it’s still a miss. I’m pleased with the progress we made, especially considering the whole “life” thing.
  • Improving prediction and smoothing for character movement. Miss.
  • Basic combat up and working, with triggerable abilities that have cooldowns, can be cancelled, etc. Completed. 
  • Building the framework for very-low-latency communication with the server on these, for that extra-tight game feel. Completed.
  •  Last bit of initial work on data stream encryption. Completed. 
  • Logins and accounts in patcher and game, and connected to the persistent character work from last sprint. Completed. 
  • Ongoing character animation and editor work. Completed. 
  • Continued work/fixes to pledge transfer system after internal test with usability and UI changes. Completed.- Finish work of functionality review with feature lock for initial testing of PTS. 
  • Create a Transfer log viewer. Completed. 
  • Evaluation of third party software for possible inclusion in game. Miss
  • Environment artwork: Tree set with LODs (Level of Detail). Completed.

So, not a bad update but we did miss out on a few items that we hoped to take care of this sprint but so it goes. We’ll be a little lighter on the tech side next sprint as we do have to take care of the old items first but we are still on track for the opening of our IT testing in January as scheduled.
