Morning Update - September 19th 2013

Time for another two-part update. Today's update focuses on the first "class concept reveal" for Camelot Unchained™. The class is called HelBound™ and they are a Viking class. You can find all the juicy and wriggling details here. This update has the first “To be a…” tale that unveils the class through a combination of story and lots of early concept art for the HelBound’s masks, armor, and weapons. As always, these are very early roughs and are meant to demonstrate some concepts stylistically, not the final art for the class. When you look at the armor concepts you’ll see a more realistic style as well as two-toned armor that is meant to represent Hel’s dual nature. The same holds true for the weapon concepts. Please keep this in mind as you read the story and look at the very early art work from the team.

Once again, the update can be found here.

Have a great weekend everyone (though this is a day early)! :)

I really like the story and the artwork here. Keep up the good work!

As for the discussion, I myself fundamentally disagree with a few comments here about the role of healing, multi-purpose classes, etc. But that's a bar brawl to have somewhere else. :-)

( I used Dragonlance just as an offhand example )

@ Mel A - I like to "step in" to different worlds. So to speak. In my mind, I am walking into the world of Dragonlance, experiencing it, if you will. I don't just "sink my teeth" in to a good book .. I like to step in to it, as though I were experiencing it and immerse myself as best as I can. Appreciate it none the less. :P

Mark, I'm really bummed about WAR closing. I've played a huge roll in that game and I'm really bummed out. Can you hook me up with Alpha so I have something to do next year. My contribution to class balance and roles will be helpful. I'm the tester you want. plug plug, ya ya, but I wanted to try to get in. I couldn't afford the upgrade :( Anyways, let me know.

Great work. The class sounds really interesting. The only thing I don't care for is the art for the spirit of the ancient ancestor masks; all the rest of the concept art looks amazing though.

Wow, i like the direction of the kind of class. Reminds me very much of the Disciple in Vanguard SOH. If there are many targets to smack around, then you can heal the heck out of people. But if your buddy is poisoned by a trap or hit from an unseen sniper you are powerless to aid them or yourself for that matter.

Love the half mask concepts. Especially the ones with he hanging chain veil's.

Keep up the non traditional thinking while flushing out other concepts of the game. Make it feel new and confusing versus tried and true.

The concept arts look cool and they remind me of the anime called Bleach.

    8. Mel A on September 19, 2013

Very cool, Mark! I think I see three options here, if I read correctly: healer, dps, tank or light-tank. Yes?

I agree with previous comments that it would be fun to have a combination of dps/heals, or melee/heals (very cool bladed staff concept.)

Question: will Helbound be completely identifiable from a distance due to the mask/armor? I mean, if they are, then someone will always know how to fight you before they engage, which is a disadvantage. In DAoC, unless there are pets along for the ride, you don't always know what's coming, even if you have a pretty good idea of the possibilities (shield size, some definitive armor characteristics, etc.)

(note to Matthew: the saying is, "sink your teeth into..." Not being critical, just trying to be helpful.)

Very happy to see this MJ! Awesome concept and feel to it. Now of to read the “To be a…”

I love the duality concept, but as @Stiler Orion said earlier, I worry about the choice between healer and dps. Does choosing one lock off the other entirely?

My favorite classes to play are multi-purpose. I hate it when classes are highly restrictive- when you're a healer, but if you do anything but Heal!Heal!Heal! you're 'wasting precious mana', or dps who has no extra bells & whistles and all you're good for is damage pure and simple. Sure, some people like that, but to me it's simply boring. So I'm hoping the HelBound brings more to the table than 'just heals' or 'just dps' after they make their choice.

(I also agree with Stiler on the Goblin Shaman, but I'll also add the Disciple of Khaine, because it was fun to heal with swords.)

Just as a sidenote to the art team - I am a HUGE fan of bladestaves. They are one of my all time favorite weapons. Speed, agility, defense, offense and acrobatics that can performed with one is quite fun to watch. That said, I absolutely love these bladestaves. I also love the fact you're giving them custom FX. That's something I've always appreciated about weapons is unique special FX on a per weapon basis or per weapon type basis on top of glowiness that can alternately be placed onto it. Animated weapons are by far some of the catchiest and most interesting---usually. Sometimes you get a non-animated weapon that is just too gorgeous to deny.

Artistically and aesthetically I find this very interesting.

Story wise, I also find this interesting.

Class wise - I am no longer interested. It's no offense to you, I just don't like playing healers! Hehe.

I have a curious question for you and team, MJ. Will you guys be releasing a Lore compendium or perhaps books in the same manner that so many other games have done? I think it'd be a pretty awesome way to flesh out the story further and give us something to seek our teeth into prior to launch or alongside of launch.

After reading the other lore elements that you've come up with thus far for the game, I think it'd be a very interesting and unique universe to step into book wise!

I'm liking the concepts and looks of the class, the duality aspect and runes, etc are very fitting and looks awesome.

What I fear though is that the class makes you choose between either a "healer" or "dps."

I have tried to play healers in mmo's but most of the times I have tried it has been the usual "sit in back watching health bars and tossing heals on people that need it." You feel like you aren't really "fighting" or doing anything in-combat. It gets boring to a lot of people and this is one of (imo) the reasons why in most mmo's the healers are the least played classes (even the new FFXIV healers are the least played class along with tanks).

However there was one healer class that "fixed" this and did it well, and it's one you may know Mark, the Goblin Shaman class in Warhammer online.

The way the shaman had this "duality" where they HAD to deal damage and actually fight, in turn increasing their "waaaagh" meter which made their healing better.

I absolutely loved that class and one of the few times I tried a healing class that was actually fun to me. I felt like I was actually part of the combat, and their dps wasn't super-small and didn't feel powerless compared to other classes either, the dps didn't feel like a "tacked on" aspect or cheap.

I hope there's at least a similar type of healer in this game compared to them, something more involving with combat and taking part in it.

I'm loving it! Who knew a healing class could look so cool?

    15. simon bartley (Beggar King) on September 19, 2013

Ok these sound pretty damned cool, a duality class, MJ have you ever been to see a DR with a comfy couch to lie on because I have no idea where these ideas come from lol ;)

Wow, I am floored! Love everything about this class so far. Great backstory, cool classconcept and awsome looking art! Very excited to hear about more classconcepts soon, much more fun than races. ;)
