Update #60

Afternoon Update - August 30th 2013

Folks,

Today’s update will be heavy on the visual side and very light on the textual side (<The crowd cheers wildly!>). First up we have a video presentation by Tim Mills on how to build a simple MMORPG-style UI using our current “Make a game out of the web” system. Quick programming note: the UI that Tim is using is for demonstration purposes ONLY. Please do not try to read anything into the style of the UI presented. I asked the art team to create some assets that were incredibly generic and could feel right at home in any number of MMORPGs and that’s what they did. The UI Tim builds is simple and while it only shows a fraction of the power that our system will have at launch, it demonstrates why we are going down this path. Making truly custom and unique UIs for Camelot Unchained™ will be easier than any other MMORPG that I have worked on (or played with) in the past and I’m looking forward to modding it myself. I don’t want to overhype this feature but we do believe that it will be an important part of our game and something that I expect other game developers to use in the future.

Today’s second bit of visual goodness is some early concept art for the Cait Sith. The update has a number of highly stylized drawings (and some of the inspiration for the pieces) as well as four hand studies. There are some additional pieces that we will post with next week’s full update that are quite interesting as well. As per usual, this art is anything but final but I think you’ll see that we are not heading down the path to “Hello Kittyland” or creating a tired artistic vision just to get a cat-like race in the game.  Like all the potential races we have shown for Camelot Unchained, the Cait Sith will be worked on over the next two years and only put into the game if they are great. As an FYI, by the time we select our launch races I hope that we will have shown over two dozen potential races to our backers.

It’s the Friday before Labor Day here and for those folks in the USA, have a great holiday weekend! We look forward to posting a full update next week that will also include the next Becoming™ tale.  I hope you folks will go crazy for it.

 Have a great weekend all!

The Cait Sith are excellent! I was ambivalent about the idea, but this art is the first time I've liked a "beast race". Just a great look.

Awesome an update on my birthday! (that is why I didn't see it yesterday :P) Everything is shaping up great! I love the look of the Cait Sith, with my only criticism being the verbal likeness to Final Fantasy 7. Personally I like the name and can see past it, but my worries extend to the select few that are going to be like "god they are trying to copy FF7" You know they are out there lol..

@MJ I had The Lion King in mind or some other cartoon but it was only one of the artworks (the 4th) and it seems familiar to me. After reading the Lore I imagined them more "ROAR" than "Meow" or "purrr". But anyway I know that I won't like every races, we also need races to hate, this is not My little Camelot, friendship is magic ! :D

Anyway to overall job is great, I love the artists we have here.

Darn this UI update has got me all fired up now! I do this for a living, so being able to use my skills to create my own UI in such a simple way is awesome! I wanna get started already and I guess I can as well! :) Thanks for this! Also love the Cait Sith concept even though animal races aren't usually my cup of tea. Great job as always!

Bearing in mind that I am someone with ZERO html/javascript/etc knowledge, I am wondering if the UI elements will be able to be freely moved around the screen once it is designed. The best example I can give is LOTRO, where you can drag every UI element to wherever you want on the screen. Is that something you have to build into your UI design to begin with to be able to do that?

      [MJ] First, some general comments:

Thanks for all the feedback folks, positive and negative (though I do prefer that people a;ways be polite). Second, in terms of the Cait Sith (or any race) in terms of how they will look in gear, please keep in mind that I specifically asked our artists not to worry about that yet. I want them to focus on form and not worry about armor, weapons, etc. yet. That will come later and frankly, will need its own round(s) of of creation/iteration so putting the two together at this point would have been a mistake. Thirdly, in terms of the CS specifically, these are the earliest roughs of the concept. Unlike creating humans, our artists have no form to follow so whether it is their feet, hands, etc., these are bits that will be worked out over the next two years. Please keep this in mind when you are critiquing the artwork. :)

@Matthew – Wow, long post, thanks. Sucks that you have carpel tunnel, my wife had the same problem at her job and Sandra has been dealing with it for months. It’s a real pain. As why the CS would wear armor, wield weapons, you are mostly right. The other reason they would do that is because armor/weapons make them more effective. They might not like wearing it and they might love to kill something with a swipe of their claws but their fur isn’t very effective at stopping a crossbow bolt and their claws can’t penetrate armor as well as a beautifully crafted sword. :)
In terms of us hitting the mark yet, we know that. If two (sometimes three) concept artists could nail each race in two weeks going from start to finish (while working on other things at the same time), I’d be shocked. I’ve been fortunate to work with some fine concept artists over the years and this stuff just takes time, especially when you are going with non-humans. If terms of your suggestions, they are good but keep in mind the fact that I do want the basic form done first. We nail that and then move on from there.

In terms of your UI praise, thanks it is going to be so much fun to play with going forward.

      @Peter – You’re welcome!

@Saicon – Yep, that’s the plan. I want our team to come up with a huge number of options for all of us to look at before we lockdown the final launch races. That’s one reason we are doing things this way (shorter concept time per race). Now, will we actually have two dozen? I hope so and in this case I’d rather shoot for having more options than fewer.
As to the UI praise, thanks!

@Pouloum – While I don’t think we’re in Aristocats territory, we know we have a long way to go with the Cait Sith before they are ready for possible inclusion.

@CU inc – Thanks! As to male characters (no matter the realm), just wait. Our next race will be a human Viking race. :)

@Christian – You are, of course, entitled to your opinion. Thanks for your feedback.

@Marc – Glad you liked the UI and as to the Cait Sith, no worries. No single race will be for all people. Some, like you, won’t play animal-like races while other people will, that’s why we want to go down this road of creating a lot of different races for review.

@Negura – Thanks for your feedback.

@Chris – Thanks for your feedback on the CS and for the UI.

@Leenak – LOL, well, at least in Camelot Unchained our cats come from the lore of two of the three realms.

      @Alexander – Thank you.

@Dude – Let’s see how the CS shake out over the next two years. We’ve only been working on them for less than two weeks. :)

@Tenebrus – Thanks for the UI love, appreciate it. As to the CS, I’m glad you agree that we nailed the evolved house cat since that was exactly what we were going for. The next step will be to make them more vicious/deadly looking.

@Maxx – LOL. I’m sure that they feel the same way about you.

      @My Cat Kevin – Thanks.

@Eric – Thanks! The UI presentation came out great and the reaction to the Cait Sith has been as expected so I’m quite happy.

      @Baba – Thanks!

@Erev – We’ll keep iterating on them over the next year or so, this is only first pass.

@Steven – Thanks and yeah, rubbing the CS’s belly would probably not end well. :)

Again, thanks all for your feedback. I’m going to stick with the forums for additional Q&A/Give and Take/Rotten Fruit so join me there if you have additional comments!

I could envision a catlike race that essentially 'didn't wear armour' per se, but thier natural defenses got Thicker coats, sharper claws and more muscular. I never thought a catlike race would wear something that would/could slow them down or hamper thier movements.

@ Peter - Yes, exactly. Since they're supposed to be that -- and not necessarily mutated lions or tigers, it fits appropriately. I think people were expecting some transformation into a majestic beast that is irrelevant to its DNA. Housecat DNA =/= Lion DNA.

I absolutely agree about SP-01 being the most ferocious of the bunch and showing the wildcat feel in the middle. It's also going to be the more difficult one to design for as far as weapons / armor / etc go. If they could pull it off though, it'd be absolutely wicked. If ever there were to be what I'd expect a werecat to look like, it would be similar to the black / orange male one in SP-01.

I think that part of the thing that is throwing me / others potentially off in the first two is the tiny feet of the female. While I realize you want to keep in line with proportionality of a house cat, I think they could do with a bit of resizing. That's just me and my personal preference, however.

The MD-02 has this proud, regal adventurer feel to it in the male one. Honestly, I think that the artists nailed the male ones more than anything. I can sense power and predatory destructive power in them much more than I can in the female of the species. I don't think it will take much tweaking to get the male to a more "acceptable" form for some of the naysayers.

Now on the side of the update that involves UI:

I am currently rubbing my hands together in similar fashion to Mr. Burns from the Simpsons. This sounds absolutely easy as hell to play with.

Thanks for the UI update Tim, plus others involved. Looks very promising and it's nice to know that it can be used across the most popular internet access like Mozilla/Chrome.

Also for someone outside of the business and not so great at modding it looks relatively easy to pickup and learn, but also complex at the same time. Hard to describe, i think those with exceptional web skills will excel at making intricate UI's but also perhaps grab stuff from those that arn't too skilled with html and web skills, that just want to work on making one aspect special like a background.

On the otherside of the update, i personally still believe in the concept art from the team as they actually look like real cats would not some fake off shot lion type critter or something with cow ears. They look like a mutated/powered up house cat. I truly mean that, people can't deny that fact! I like the SP-O1 image because the middle black cat looks predatory in that pose.

      Anyways thanks for the update!

Over two dozen potential races to choose from before launch? That is absolutely incredible! I didn't expect that. Wow.... Really looking forward to all of them and the classes ofc.

Even though I'm not into animal races all that much myself I have absolutely nothing against them being in them game if they get picked at the end. I love games with a lot of variety.

I really like artwork no. 4. A very gracile, mysterious and at the same time dangerous look. That's exactly what I expect cats to look like. Love it!

Also thanks to Tim for showing the presentation of "how to build a UI for a MMORPG". Again, variety matters. And this feature gives you a lot of customization and variety. Very well done!

Can't wait for the other updates. So excited! :)

      TL;DR version:

It's at 40%. If you want to get to the 70%+ markers - you need to add a lot more viciousness and power to them. Right now you're teetering on furrydom for some of these concepts without the snarling, growling in your face death trap that is the maw of a lion or bengal tiger. The only thing about the Charr in GW2 I didn't like was the cow ears. Beyond that - it was an excellent example of feline fury. I think Pouloum summed it up pretty strongly.

Took off my wrist brace (carpel tunnel) to be able to write this for you MJ.

Hopefully you will have the opportunity to read this.

      Concept Art:

"I can't imagine a reason for them to wear armor." Why did the Charr wear armor? Because they are an industrious warring people who pride themselves on creating epic machines of war both as vehicles and in their weaponry. While I realize that the CS are not going to be wielding guns, because I think you mentioned you wanted to avoid guns, I recognize this as a concern.

The first ones make for excellent looking felines, but without huge fangs similar to a sabertooth tiger, they just aren't quite reaching beyond cute or cuddly.

SP-01 - This is the furthest reaching into the realm of bad-assery you've got thus far. I would love to see how you incorporate outfits into their beautiful and fluffy fur. I also imagine that you might consider creating claw armor / weapons that extend out from their claws that would make them more viable in combat as a melee fighter. Just a potential there.

The one directly above SP-01 looks far too werewolf too me. The face is going far into fox/canine territory and edging way out of feline.

MD-02 - This is your best of them all I think as far as justifiability goes and feasibility in outfits. If you create them based on this as the "base," but also add features for different types of ears, a mane, fur types, colors, patterns, etc ..in the same manner that the Charr get - but perhaps even more .. you will yield a great deal more interest. I also believe that possibly some horns, large fangs, sharper features and more would help. For the male version, try adding a braded goatee/beard type of thing and a long flowy mane IE: Lion's Mane as an option. I think this will add regaleness that would befit an arthurian race.

There is a substantial amount of possibility here - but I definitely don't think you have hit the mark yet on fierce, furocious, battle-hardened and proud feline warriors. Not quite yet. There are a few elements missing that don't push it over that edge ... but I definitely believe that you are heading in the right direction. Once you've pushed past that line, I am pretty sure you'll know it -- and when you present this stuff to the public again after you've gotten past that line, I think you'll garner a significantly larger group of support.

There are a lot of other directions you can take with this. You can add spikes coming from the forearms -- so long as it's lore-justifiable. You can add blades a la the Shar from DAoC coming from the forearms. You can add a spike coming out of the knee caps from the bone itself to give it this vicious "WTF MAN!" type of thing. You can make oversized paws with oversized claws that are "realistically" not anatomically accurate but for the sake of art and emphasizing deadliness would be applicable. You can make tail armor that is flexible and works on a hinge system with little spikes after every scale down the tail itself. As I said before, I think that large fangs will help push it over the edge into vicious rather than merely regal and confident like the MD-02 shows.

Perhaps if you had them draw some Concepts where they are animated for a "roar" and have their fangs bared / mouths open and they are about to pounce their prey, you might yield some more fans from the "not feeling the vicious ... too cuddly" side of the fence. A piece of art that depicts their bestial and strong nature that isn't so easily conveyed in the current above imagery.

      Hope this all helps MJ.

      - Matt

Loving the UI stuff. Got me excited.

As for the CS, while I admit there is a certain "majesty" to them, I am just not feeling the "badass" part.

I liked @Johsua's idea of a cat and gorilla mix. Maybe shorten up the legs, lengthen the torso and arms, and fill out the shoulders. Maybe even make the head a bit more hyena like (aren't they more feline than dog as well?). Then you could to some creative stuff with their fighting styles by making it more of jumping, pouncing, and rolling fighting style. Not some crazy mad monkey fu fighting, but more like how lions and tigers fight and attack. Low to the ground, then jumping in mauling you with speed and brute force. Just some thoughts.

Then again, it did seem like from their "Becoming" they were originally house cats. And if that's the look and feel you are going for, you nailed it. It just doesn't inspire any "awe" or "fear" for me.

I'll be honest, I'm not feeling the CS. The main, objective reason, is they don't have a reason to use gear. If they're these vicious, killing machines, their claws are their weapons. And armor would seem to be a hindrance, fur is designed to protect against attacks/bites, and adding armor on top of that would seem to cause issues with this vision.

I can't imagine a scenario where these fur covered creatures would be wearing relatively constricting armor (with their fur sticking out) or them wielding a sword while they have these super pronounced claws. I appreciate the whole thinking outside the box with races, but CS just doesn't sit right with me in their current form.

If I had one suggestion I'd say make them more blended. When I see the concept art I think oh bipedal cats. Make them more "alien" and unsettling, combine strange parts from both cats and humans and just see what you get.

Caveat: I have no artistic talent. However, to my eye some of the heads seemed a little small for the bodies, especially the female ones. Also, though I like the look of the big paws and fore-arms, I'd also like a thinner, more sinewy option. In other words, not purr-fect, but close.

[MJ] @Luiz - Thanks so much!

@Stiler - We are really trying to stay away from the typical cat races for our Cait Sith. As to my BSC ideas, our first goal is to nail the look for some possible core races and then move to another group. I'd love to be able to do some truly non-humanoid races but as you correctly point out, that comes at an additional cost. And as truly fun and/or BSC some concepts are, part of my job here is to manage expectations/expenditures no matter how much I would really, really want some BSC races in there.

@Jason - Working with the UI will be fun for a lot of people, glad you are one of them. As to the differentiation between the realms, that's hugely important and something we will focus on heavily. As to an homage to some of the races of Dark Age of Camelot, we'll see. For me it boils down to whether a race/legend can be made to fit into this post-apocalyptic world and be made interesting for our players.

@Simon - LOL. As to the Cait Sith, these cats will definitely evolve over the next two years. The non-human races will end up lapping up more dev time but I think that they will be worth it in the end. As to another session with Michelle, yep, we will be doing more of those once we get into the Fall/Winter.

@Abel - We'll have to see how it works out, won't we. :) It's going to be a lot of fun but I'm actually a little bit optimistic (which is a bit out of the norm for me as I tend towards cynicism after taking a sharp right past pragmatism). :)

Really enjoying the concept art, really talented work. I'm sure there will me but please, please please make sure there's a decent amount of differentiation in art styles and races between the three realms. Would also be great to see some sort of homage to the classic Camelot races somehow.

I really like the middle character in the fifth picture (with 3 different characters). The black cat guy with all the long tufts of hair and the weird mane around his neck and ears sticking up (may be horns, I can't quite tell from the size of the pic).

It just looks different to me from most "cat" races in rpgs and that's why I like it, looks kind of like a mix of a werewolf style race with a panther or something.

Really looking forward to your "BSC" race idea's, I am the type of player who loooooooves the off the wall races and things that haven't been done a lot in other mmo's as far as player races go.

I wonder if there's anything in the pipeline/concept that might be less "humanoid?" (IE not just two legs/two arms like a humanoid model). Would love to see something that plays a bit differently, though those are harder to design (especially when it comes to animating and then designing clothing/armour and things for them.

[MJ] @Andrew - Great point about the practical issues. I want all the races to have an equal amount of visual differentiation. Now, I do have some BSC race ideas as well that might not be able to be as visually differentiated but they are not at the top of the list.

Glad you also like the early work on the CS. They aren't there yet but we're off to a good start with them.

[MJ] @Joshua - And that's why the artists are creating concept art without armor at this point. I want to see if we can make all of our races look cool, interesting, etc. without relying on armor, weapons, etc. This way the artists can focus on the core character without distraction as can our Founders. Glad you remember the Lurikeens, we definitely got lots of reactions to them. :)

@Acron - Glad you are impressed. As of now, we are using Chromium and Chromium Embedded Framework.

@Matthew - Cool. As I pointed out in the update, these are very early concept pieces and, as usual, both Sandra and Michelle over-delivered in both the quantity and quality given the short turnaround and other things that they were also doing. I'm really looking forward to shutting down new racial concept art in a few weeks so that we can then focus on iteration/polish on what we have as well as some early concept classes.

I love the 'fox' (or maybe lynx) look to these cat people. Usually can't stand the more traditional cat-eared humans other games use. That said, one of the biggest issues as a player that I have towards declining to play something that veers away from the standard human model is how often the more unique races in MMOs sacrifice armor visuals due to their body structure being too different and studios deciding against creating entirely different textures/skins for all their items to fit that skeleton.

Will the 'barbie-doll' effect be cast aside for some of these more unique-looking races in CU? Or will the non-standard humanoids have as much visual differentiation via gear as the more standard humans?

Fabulous update! This is something that really strikes a chord with me! I am very curious about your Web UI tech - is it a custom thing? Webkit? CEF? Berkelium? I have done similar in the past but your results are extremely impressive, given the time frame.

You know you're right Mark. I recall having similar feeling towards Lurikeens, all weak and frail looking, but once you put a cape on them they looked like little Yoda's and were extremely fun to play.

Can we see some of these guys in black hooded cloaks?

[MJ] @Joshua - Thanks. I believe that if we can pull off the "UI out of the web" thing, it will be a very, very good thing for our game. Back when I was promoting Warhammer, I said that PQs would end up being one of the most imitated/iterated on features from that game. Well, I think that this could end up being even more useful to other game devs depending on how things work out of course. :)

      @Grim - Thanks!

Still not a fan of the name of the race due to the Final Fantasy 7 character. However, I can get over that though it might take a while before the name "Cait Sith" draws up the image of a cat with a megaphone riding a big cute stuffed animal.

The artwork looks pretty awesome though. Great job!

[MJ] @Jennifer - Both. :) I knew that introducing them would be the cause of lots of debate in the CU Community as our Founders haven't disappointed me at all with their reaction.

@Zakharov - Thanks. We still have a long way to go with all of our racial concepts but these are a good start.

@Joshua - I don't know if you were following Dark Age of Camelot before it launched, but we had some people saying the same thing about the races in that game.

Whether the Cait Sith make the cut or not will depend on how they evolve over the next two years. Fortunately, we don't have to decide on this yet. :)

ONE HOME WITH A VIEW – DIGITAL ONLY ============================== With this tier PLEDGE OWNER ONLY receives the LIVING LARGE rewards and THESE UPGRADES: a REALM-LOCKED PLOT on top of the ONE Realm’s “border mountains” (part of a SAFE zone), a TOTAL OF 300 FOUNDER’S POINTS + RESERVED NAMING RIGHTS for a guild you start (unless the guild's name is trademarked/copyright by someone else and secondary to buyers of Guild Tiers) + TOTAL NUMBER OF BETA INVITES UPGRADED TO SIX + TOTAL NUMBER OF CHARACTER SLOTS UPGRADED BY SIX AT LAUNCH. Your mountain top plot will contain enough room for ONE HOUSE ONLY (the LL reward house) and both plot and house designed with the help of CSE and the plot will be reachable only by flier. While we guarantee that you’ll have a plot somewhere in your server of choice (based on when you backed this game), not all plots are created equal. Plot size in this tier is approximately 20% of the size of our “Island” tier. In addition, pledge owner receives THREE DIGITAL COPIES OF THE GAME (redeemable at the HERO LEVEL ONLY). Backers will be contacted based on when they pledged for Camelot Unchained and gave us their contact information. This tier will not be available after release. MY INN, MY WAY – PHYSICAL REWARDS ============================== With this non-repeatable, limited tier, PLEDGE OWNER receives THIS IS MINE! rewards and THESE UPGRADES: instead of a structure, pledge owner is assigned ONE OF THE INNS IN THE SAFE AREAS of the world + ONE OF EVERY ITEM IN THE FOUNDER’S EXCHANGE + an ADDITIONAL 100 FOUNDER’S POINTS (400 total) + RESERVED NAMING RIGHTS for a guild you start (unless the guild's name is trademarked/copyright by someone else) + TOTAL NUMBER OF BETA INVITES UPGRADED TO SIX + TOTAL NUMBER OF CHARACTER SLOTS UPGRADED BY SIX AT LAUNCH. Best of all, you will work with our team to both decorate and choose a tasteful name for an inn that is consistent with our game’s lore for within the realm of your choice. As the master of your own inn, you will be able to buy and resell food, drink, etc. but any currency that you hold cannot be shared with other players or even other characters of yours (sorry, but Mark insists, no game-balance altering items). Your inn will remain your property as long as the game is operating, even if the account goes inactive. As the owner of the inn you will not have to pay any rent on the property but you will be managing an inn and have to maintain a positive cash balance or you’ll have to make up the balance from your own in-game (we are not selling gold, ever!) currency reserves. Think of this as a simple inn simulator. While we guarantee that you’ll have a plot somewhere in your server of choice (based on when you backed this game), not all plots are created equal. Backers will be contacted based on when they pledged for Camelot Unchained and gave us their contact information. In addition, pledge owner receives SIX DIGITAL COPIES OF THE GAME (redeemable at the HERO LEVEL ONLY). This tier will not be available after release.
