Update #40. Tom Vasel downgrades Hexpanse

 Dear backers,

After a long time of waiting, the Dice Tower youtube channel finally released it's Hexpanse review, but unfortunately it is really not what we have been expecting: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=68B1-xZORvg

We are sorry to learn that Tom Vasel did not like our game because he has been disappointed by the thematic of game, and did not get what he expected from the Hexpanse. Even if we had pointed out that this is an abstract tactical game, where the goal is to build a given formation while you try to create setbacks for the others, as you have to do in most mages. We believe that the sci-fi world and background we created for the game is not a negative, but a positive feature of the game.

Of course we understand that everyone is ought to have their own subjective opinion, but we have to say that we do not agree with most of the problems mentioned by Tom, and we believe that the game is neither terrible, nor boring. We’ve had hundreds of test games before it was published, and received dozens of reviews from both testers and players, and we have never encountered a critic as negative as this from Tom Vasel. In addition, we have to mention that Tom's knowledge of the rules is not entirely correct, for example the Mercenaries do not get to the recovery ship once they are defeated - as it is mentioned three times in the rulebook. We believe that if he had spent a little more time getting to know the game maybe he wouldn't have found it terrible.

Some of the players may find such things as using the face of our backers in the game, or a dice to represent the warlord's life points to be a bothersome feature, but we would expect a little bore objective point of view from a critic, even if they do not like abstract games. All in all, we would like to ask everyone not to judge the game without first trying it, and to feel free to share their experiences, either good or bad, after they did, so everyone can find a more objective, collective opinion of Hexpanse. We have a BGG page also: https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/204143/hexpanse

Thanks,

Many people like to buy games that Tom V rates poorly. I don't even get why his show got so popular. It's not great or well done in any way.

I was hoping to see Zee from DT to review it as this game is more up his alley. Was expecting something like this from Tom/Sam, as they are bummed out if there is a die they can't roll...

Thank you all for your positive feedbacks, it really means a lot for us, whether it is here on in the youtube comment section under the video.
Unfortunately since we are a small company a negative feedback like this, especially with so many viewers can make a lot of harm for us, since a lot of people prefers to make up their mind about games without playing it, only based on popular critics. The only way to somehow revert this is asking you, the ones who actually played the game but not part of the company, to share their opinions on the matter.
This is why we decided to share this matter with you, and we are really glad to see that the ones who truly tried to play this game have a majority of positive experiences with it. We would like to ask you, that if you had 2 more minutes to help us to share your opinions under his video as well, so others can see them.

I don't mind if folks have a different opinion than I do. Different strokes for different folks and all... I posted on his video comments that there are plenty of people who have played the game and enjoy it. I like to hear all sides of a story before I make up my mind. Don't watch just one reviewer if possible and take their opinion as gospel. Watch and read several. Make up your own mind. Whenever I have an opportunity, which is seldom, I like to actually demo the game myself.
Keep up the good work Korona Games. Don't let one bad review get you down.

I remember a few times when I bought a game, played it a few times with my friends and we had a lot of fun playing. Then I saw that Tom had a review out and decided to watch it. There have been times when I'm listening to him and he either didn't understand something or just completely glazed over some of the rules, more than likely not playing certain aspects of the game correctly. There were actually a few times where I was listening to him and he totally stated information I couldn't even find in the rule book. I stopped listening to his reviews a while back. I like to form my own opinion. I don't need someone telling me what I'm supposed to like or not like.

Tom has a problem with missing rules.

He also has an issue with stating he doesn't like a particular type of game, then he reviews that game and gives it a bad review because he had previously stated he already doesn't like this type of game.

I used to watch The Dice Tower but to be honest people are right; Tom vasel let his status in the board game Community go to his head, and now, in his mind, he rules the roost.

I don't mean to be rude and mean no disrespect to him, but I've learned not to even bother watching his reviews because they come across as incredibly arrogant and often don't tell me too much about the actual game (I've tried watching a good twenty over time to give him the benefit of the doubt). If someone came be bothered to read the rules, that's on them.

I wouldn't take it too personally. You've run a successful campaign with a strong fan base who enjoys playing it :)

I've played some games with Tom before. Sometimes he gets a little too over critical. I mean, games are supposed to be fun, right? He kind of sucks the fun out it with sometimes constant criticizing. I have a friend I used to game with that did the same thing. Needless to say, I don't play games with that friend anymore.

Hexpanse gets to my groups table monthly. Played and enjoyed! Please keep making cool games. I will be watching. Thank you!

The problem is many people who never heard about the game follow his opions like a revelation. Just take a look to the comments below the video!

Tom Vasel is a jerk who let his Z-list celebrity status go to his head, and thinks his opinion carries far more weight than it actually does. I wouldn't be terribly bothered by anything he has to say.
