The Devourer and the Space Zombies she creates have destroyed countless worlds.
Those worlds didn’t have the Black Redneck.
This novel is the story of Jefferson Balladeer, an African American who is adopted as an infant by the Balladeer family (A family of white farmers from Picayune Mississippi). When Jefferson is just nine, Ma and Pa Balladeer die in a tragic tractor accident, leaving Jefferson’s adopted brother, Big Beau, to raise him.
Big Beau is large of body and heart, but, at only seventeen (an uneducated seventeen), he’s not the ideal caregiver for the naturally intellectual Jefferson. Big Beau teaches Jefferson the only thing he knows: How to be the ultimate redneck. In an effort to please the big brother he idolizes, Jefferson becomes a rodeo star and an expert sharpshooter. He becomes the Black Redneck.
When Jefferson turns seventeen, he begins to question the life Big Beau has chosen for him, and, when he discovers a dark family secret, Jefferson puts Mississippi in his rearview mirror and doesn’t plan on ever returning.
Ten Years Later...
Big Beau gets himself killed and leaves Jefferson as the sole heir to the Balladeer farm. Jefferson returns to Picayune Mississippi a changed man, well read, well travelled and a successful novelist. He plans to be in Picayune only long enough to turn the huge farm into a subdivision.
His plan is going great until a creature feared throughout the universe crashes into the woods surrounding the farm and begins to turn the teenagers who are throwing a party there into space zombies. (I hate when that happens.)
What Jefferson thought was going to be an inconvenience turns into a struggle for survival against a cosmic horror that has never been defeated. If Jefferson hopes to survive and save the Earth, he’ll have to embrace his redneck roots.
One last time he’ll have to strap on his guns and be the Black Redneck.
This novel started life as a screenplay. The script won screenplay of the month on TriggerStreet and received a lot of attention from a few production companies.
However, no one was able to get enough funding together to make the movie. Apparently, space zombies, armored aliens, and giant tentacled horrors aren’t cheap. That’s why I’ve decided to inject this story right into your brain using the power of imagination.
The novel, about 300 pages, is completed and edited. The cover art is even done. So if you support this project you won’t have to wait long for your rewards. If you like to sample before spending your hard-earned cash, you can read the first 100 pages over at my website. http://www.professional-liar.com/blackredneck-vs-spacezombies.html
If the Kickstarter is successful the book will be published in two formats.
A digital version in both ePub(iPad/Nook) and Mobi(Kindle) versions. PDF will also be available.
A trade paperback version (probably of the 6x9 variety)
Why I need your money.
I’ll use all the funds for production of the book, shipping, ISBN, and other miscellaneous cost. I’ll also be able to recoup the some of the money I’ve spent on editing and the cover art. I'm just trying to break even and get the book out there.
Who would read such a thing?
Everyone! Seriously, this is a fun adventure that’s about overcoming racism and overcoming your unusual or humble beginnings…and shooting space zombies.
I’ve gotten great feedback on this story and won over many who rolled their eyes at the title. But people who like the following will be especially interested.
People who are fond H.P. Lovecraft. There’s lot of cosmic horror and tentacle-ly goodness to be found here.
People who love monster movies.
People who love adventure novels.
People who love to read about unique characters. The protagonist here is one you haven’t met before and the same goes for the monsters he faces.
People who love fast-paced, cinematic novels.
People who like uplifting, humorous novels.
Come on Y’all! Let’s make an awesome, adventure novel.
You can see all the rewards over there on the side, but I wanted to talk to you about the T-shirt.
It’s been my experience in life that people will do anything for a t-shirt, even give blood. What? That’s about saving lives? Okay, but people like T-shirts.
Also, it’s unfortunate that when you read an awesome e-book that you don’t have any physical thing to mark the experience.
That’s one reason people like paper books. They can put them on a shelf to keep them as souvenirs for all the unique places visited. That’s why I’ve put a lot of effort (and money) into producing a cool t-shirt people will like.
This T-shirt will allow you to get the e book, save a tree, and still have a souvenir of the adventure.
As an added bonus you’ll be able to advertise my novel for years to come at no cost to myself. Thanks in advance.
I have some interesting ideas about stretch goals like adding some interior art and chapter icons, both could actually be used to add to and help tell the story, but I’ll post more about this later if we meet our goal.
Thanks for checking out my project and thanks for contributing. If you want to go above and beyond the call of duty, please let all your friends know about the project through various social media outlet to make it a success.
Risks and challenges
The novel is done. The editing is done, even the cover art is done. So, rest assured you’ll get any reward that is promised to you in a timely manner.
The only thing that could slow down production of the novel is if it is so successful that I can afford to add some interior art, but that would be a good thing and probably only set production back by a month or so.
The final obstacle I would like to mention is that I’m offering the e book for the low, low price of $3.00. This is what I’ll ultimately sell the book for on Amazon and didn’t want to charge my early supporters more. I really want as many people as possible to read this book so I’m keeping this price point at impulse buy levels. I’m hoping because of this people will be more willing to spread the word about the project.
