Welcome to the Buma's Pizzeria kickstarter. This project is brought to you by the creator of Jon's Street Eats and Marrow, Jon Kosorek, and his new partner, Angelo Celeri. Buma's will be located in the same location as Marrow at 325 19th Street in Oakland. Marrow was a labor of love and even though it was well-received by the press and the foodie community, it just wasn't the right fit for the neighborhood. It became evident quickly that this location really should be a slice shop with whole pie take-out and delivery.
Buma was the nickname of our very close and long time friend and investor, Bahram Morid. Bahram passed away this summer after a long battle with brain cancer. It will be a huge priority of Buma's to donate 1% of gross sales to cancer research and supporting those battling brain cancer.
Kosorek will build the menu to replicate the pizza joints he grew up with in New York. There may be a twist here and there, but the goal here is to provide a very classic NY-style pizza and great wings, available for dine-in, take-out and delivery.
The conversation has been underway for some time but there are always unexpected delays and costs. To help ensure we can acquire all of the needed equipment and staff and still open in a reasonable amount of time, we are reaching out for your help.
We have tried to keep our rewards in line with your donation and hope you can find room in your holiday budget to help us out a little with what you can.
Risks and challenges
2014 was a very challenging year for me. In January, we welcomed a beautiful baby girl into this world and then in March my mother had to have an emergency quintuple bypass. In May, my business partner and long time close friend (to whom this project is a tribute to) was diagnosed with a second brain tumor. Our world was then literally shaken up by the South Napa Quake that was centered just a couple miles from our home. Then, our dear friend Bahram lost his battle with cancer. It was just too much to tackle all these things and still operate Marrow. So, we had to close Marrow in July to focus more on family.
Six months later here we are refreshed with a new outlook on life, business, personal and professional goals. A great deal of what I always thought was important a year ago has changed dramatically. Now, the way I look at things is like this - If I can take my skill and knowledge base to provide an improved simple product to the general public that they will enjoy at a price point that allows them to come back over and over, then that puts me in a position to run a busy business and build a staff that will in turn also allow me to spend more time with my family and loved ones.
We are almost there, we just need to to get a few last pieces of equipment and complete a few more details to renew our health permit. All other permits and licenses have been acquired. So, with your help we can get this project off the ground by early to mid-January. Then we can share some of the best NY pizza you are going to find in California with YOU. Who knows what the future really holds for any of us; we would like to think we will be seeing more Buma's around the Bay Area and we hope you will join us for the ride.
