A documentary film on the creation of a sustainable garden project for the Santa Fe Community College Culinary Arts Department
The world is moving at an accelerated rate, with sometimes unhealthy results for humans and the planet. With the advent of global warming, freak storms and weather, rising transportation costs, increasing use of chemicals and hormones in our foods, and the unnecessary output of labor and expenses, we must explore a return to our fundamental, agrarian, societal roles. Sustainable gardening allows us to symbiotically work with our communities to provide support, sustenance, and a secure future. Teaching the next generation how to feed itself is highly empowering, healthy, and taps into our innate agricultural memory. The goal of my project is to promote the concept and tools for sustainable gardening amongst educational institutions, nationwide. We can effect a great change, and today's students will lead this green revolution.
My documentary film, based on currently-producing gardens at the Santa Fe Community College, will give all educational institutions a STEP-BY-STEP PRIMER FOR STARTING THEIR OWN SUSTAINABLE, FOOD-PRODUCING GARDENS. It will also be a vital aid, to assist in obtaining grant and other funding to fulfill their vision. The monies from Kickstarter will be used in the production of the film, making CD's for distribution, materials for advertising, and all costs involved in communication and follow-up with all schools. The film will follow the experiences of the faculty, administration, student body, Visual Arts Department, Culinary Arts Department, and Sustainable Agriculture Department at Santa Fe Community College. It will also provide an overview of the infrastructure process, the construction and erection of the grow beds, and the labors of volunteers and instructors as they perform the initial plantings. This film is one part of the green, Gestalt whole-istic idea that it is preeminent at this time for everyone to reduce the carbon footprint of shipping food thousands of miles, and to start growing food, locally.
Risks and challenges Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
The main challenge of this project will be in identifying, and selling the concept to educational institutions that will be open to the idea of sustainable gardening. In developing this film, I will have to tell a compelling story that has a broad scope, and not just limited to the successes particular to the Santa Fe Community College. The idea is inter-disciplinary, so involving agriculture, culinary arts, visual arts, architecture, and other departments, will require that the documentary appeals to everyone, capturing the imagination of administrative leadership, and ensuring that there will be the necessary investments of time committed toward the project.
Bringing cohesion to the film, from the actual videography, to the interviews of all involved, coupled with the instructional lineage of the construction, and the ultimate editing, will be paramount in the successful translation to my audience. The risk is not achieving this synchronization, and thus
failing to adequately instill an excitement to follow our example, and use our methodologies.
I will be involved every step of the way in addressing these challenges- from the design of the documentary, to the continuous time-lapse filming of the project, editing, and the outreach strategy. And, I will always be conscious of the expression:
'Take as much care in the end as in the beginning, and then there shall be no chance for failure'.
