We’re Team Kamikaze, made with the talents of Alan & Carrie Tupper, and Havana Nguyen. Together we make a Glyph Award-Winning webcomic series called Kamikaze, and we’re working to print our first graphic novel!
Kamikaze is a webcomic that began its life as a pitch for an animated series. With a new update every Wednesday, the comic follows the vision and story of its original iteration. After less than 2 years, and over 130 comic pages, we’re ready to take this work to print! The team has created this project to help fund our first printed book: Kamikaze Volume 1.
Kamikaze Volume 1 will be a softcover, 6 x 9in, perfect bound book. It’ll have 60 double sided pages which include the comic, world building notes, some beautiful splash art, development artwork, and an introduction by Dan Jolley (co-writer behind Dying Light, & comic titles from DC, Marvel, Dark Horse, and more). The book printing will be done by a local printer with over 20 years of experience, which means that we can get these books out to you faster!
The good news is all the hard work is done! The art is finished, additional writing is done and all the content for the book is laid out and ready to go to print. At this point all we need are the funds to get ink on paper!
In a post-apocalyptic future, where food is more precious than gold, feudal corporate houses hoard the last patches of viable cropland from a starving population. When a critical mission is blown, a mysterious covert operation has to find a new recruit to carry out their plans. A young courier intent on escaping her city is unwittingly thrown into a life or death game of espionage from which she may never escape.
Kamikaze Volume 1 is the first installment of an epic science fiction saga, a taut political thriller, and a high-flying action series with an intimate dramatic heart.
The comic is set in a world 200 years after a plague wipes out virtually all plant life on Earth. Survivors call it “The Withering.” The whole world turned brown, billions perished, and civilization as we know it was redefined.
Remaining vegetation came under forceful protection of city-states, lead by corporations that evolved into feudal royalty. Survivors settled around these protected areas to escape stretches of abandoned wasteland where only the most robust forms of life could survive the erratic weather, wind storms, and dust-bowl conditions. City-states jockey for position among themselves while searching for more farmland, resources, and any weapon to destroy their competitors.
For the millions of poor, food is more precious than gold. For the few highborn, information is more precious than food.
The artwork of Kamikaze was created with the love of animation in mind. It uses complex backgrounds, cell-shaded character art, dynamic lighting and expressive character designs which gives it a unique ‘animated’ appearance.
The artwork is created to be as immersive and appealing as possible. Influenced by the works of Greg Weisman (Gargoyles,Young Justice), Bruce Timm (Batman the Animated Series) and film works such as Ghost in the Shell, Blade Runner and Mad Max, Kamikaze has a unique style created as a love letter to some of the best in animation and sci-fi media. When fans say “It feels like I’m reading a movie!” it makes us smile because that’s exactly what we’re going for.

Risks and challenges
This is our first ever book, and first ever Kickstarter campaign. There’s a lot we’re learning as we go along. Kamikaze thus far has been an exclusively digital comic, so there has been a learning curve for us as we make the transition over to printed form.
Fortunately we’ve been able to tap into the experience and know-how of experts. Our book printer has over two decades of experience producing work for a wide range of clients, including comics. Located less than 30 minutes from the team, they have proven to be fantastic collaborators willing to mentor us as we go through the process of getting Volume 1 ready for print.
We’re also very lucky to have access to several veterans on successful Kickstarters. They’ve pointed out fulfillment pitfalls and strategies that will help us get the book and all the other rewards out in a timely, secure manner.
All the artwork has been done. We have the book layout work finished so there won’t be months of waiting. We have a quote in writing from the printer, so there shouldn’t be any cost surprises. Everything is set-up to go once we get the funds.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
