John and Cara have lived a lifetime since the mystical battles of their youth, and they've all but forgotten the horrors they faced. Now the memories have come flooding back as their reality begins to unravel, bringing them face to face with their old nemesis: a Beast stalks them patiently as the world slides headlong into darkness. To survive they'll need to take ownership of themselves, their talents, and their role in the war that still rages in the realm beyond the veil. And they're going to need a little help from their friends...
Shadow of the Spire is a dark fantasy novel that begins in today's world but questions the very reality we live in. The heroes of the story are tormented by the monsters of their youth, but they are finally ready to fight back. Their enemy is a demon as old as time itself and his twisted and murderous minions, and their greatest weapon is faith in themselves and each other and the certainty that the future is not yet written.
... with a brief look at our heroes, and through their eyes a glance into the hidden layers of our reality. John is a homicide detective, called in to deal with the bizarre occult cases that occasionally haunt the streets of Boston. His world is at a crucial tipping point between the cancer that's killing him and the secrets he's poised to unearth.
Cara is returning to her East Colorado home to visit her estranged parents and son after years of treatment for psychological trauma. On her way to a new facility that specializes in treating night terrors, she first has to deal with the memories waiting in her home town. And the realization that her son has, in fact, inherited both her talent and her enemies.
And then there's Adinar, warrior prince of the Sidhe, embarking on a quest to explore the dangerous storm that threatens the Twilight Realm and once again navigate the boundary between worlds...
Shadow of the Spire is the first of two volumes recounting the tale of our heroes as they rediscover themselves and the mystical conflict that shaped their lives. The setting is very much the world we live in, but just beyond the veil lies a realm of fey magic and shifting reality - all of it bound beneath the shadow of the Spire at the center of all things.
This story has been a very personal journey for me, inspired by many of the events of my life, people I've loved and lost, and the endless tales spun at my gaming table over the years. It also asks some of the fundamental questions about our role in the world we live in, how we perceive ourselves, and how we deal with the darkness inside. In the end, I believe, it's a story of hope. Of renewal, and of learning who we are and becoming better people in the process.
Some additional reward levels will include special perks for backers who want to contribute a personal touch to the story.
To add additional paperback copies of the the book, add an additional $20 per copy.
The manuscript for Shadow is finished and currently with the editor, and our goal is to publish in time for a launch party at TsunamiCon 2018 in Wichita, KS. The second volume, Veil of Shadows, is about 45 percent complete, and we hope to have it ready to publish by next summer, at the latest. Meeting our Kickstarter goal will permit me to pay the cover artist and my editor and complete a short run of printed copies for fulfillment and sale at conventions. In short, it gets us started.
To be honest, the book will be published either way. The people I work with have effectively volunteered their time and efforts out of love and friendship, and in turn I want to see them rewarded. I'm a huge proponent of the idea that artists and creative people should be paid for their work, and it's more important than ever that we show our support to the people who bring more beauty, heart, and meaning into our lives. In many ways, the force our heroes are fighting in the stories I write is the very same enemy that plagues many of us each and every day: self-doubt, despair, hopelessness, and fear.
But we can fight it, each and every day. And like John and Cara and every one else who seeks the Spire... we can make our rules, forge our own path, and succeed.
Thanks. And thank you for your support.
LIMITED EDITION HARDCOVER ($1500): If we reach this goal, I will add a new pledge level and add-on for a signed limited-edition hardcover copy of Shadow of the Spire.
ARTISTIC VISION ($2500): If we reach this goal, we will expand on the visual world beyond the veil with additional commissioned art. When we get close we will take a poll to determine how we proceed, either with a couple new full-color pieces which will be available as prints or with pen-and-ink illustrations that may be inserted as section headers inside the book.
Risks and challenges
I have run a few successful Kickstarters, though this is my first for a written product. I have edited and published periodicals and short-form fiction, gaming products, and prose, though this is my first novel. The book is written. Potential delays could still occur during the editing process, as well as production, but I am trying to allow for the additional time as much as possible in my estimates.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
