STORY: Welcome to the Austin Toy Museum's Kickstarter!
When you see a toy from your past, do you say, "I Had That!"? If so, you are going to say our catch phrase over and over again as you visit the Austin Toy Museum (ATM). We are creating an awesome experience to not only display toys but also to honor the memories of your past toy adventures.
There are four main reasons we are seeking your Kickstarter support:
The first aspect of funding is the start up costs. We will begin the process of creating the museum as a non-profit. We believe that the non-profit status will enable us to have a sustainable future, give us a support system and allow us to physically archive all the toys which have had an impact on all our lives.
Next is getting our location and setting it up for you to visit us. We want you to have easy access in a popular location with enough room for us to amaze you with our dioramas and displays. Families, Collectors and Museum goers will be able to enjoy our collections while having enough room to stay and play. We expect our collection offerings to grow so we want to have enough space to expand and never limit ourselves to what we can share with you.
Did you catch that we will be displaying all these great toys in a massive interactive diorama format? Yeah, that is right. Not a bunch of toys on shelves and cluttered, but dios where everything is viewable and entertaining. Diorama building is our specialty. Just Google us and you will see we are famous for building amazing dioramas. The construction of these dios in our signature style sets us apart from any toy displays you have ever seen. We love what we can build to display toys and have so much inspiration of decades of cartoons, comics, commercials and more. Our displays will be what you would expect from a refined museum surrounded by acrylic glass housing that protects the toys from dust and UV lighting (both of which degrade plastic). We want to protect our toys, but we will always have plenty of toys and games for you to enjoy. You won't be passively looking, but you will be playing so please come prepared to have fun and play for hours.
Lastly, we will be offering scholarship and education for the "Golden Age of Toys" where you will learn more than you could ever imagine about your favorite play things. We have created partnerships with toy experts such as Mark Bellomo (who has authored a series of great toy guides) and various toy database websites. We are very serious about the digital and research aspect of our museum and are creating an amazing database which we hope to share with everyone who collects toys, games, and comics. Our goal is to make our digital archive available to you 24/7 via cloud based technology. We want you to also have access to interactive features with our collection by providing you tablet displays and allowing you to bring your own device. This won't end with just an archive of toys and video games, that is just the beginning. Through the digital experience, we will be documenting the toy creation process and history by showing the prototypes, production material and tools, initial documentation, toy company records, interviews and any related historical data. This is a critical time in history to obtain all this data so that it is not lost. The preservation of these toys and their history is our top priority.
In addition, did we mention we love toys and dioramas? Well, if you have ever wanted to learn how to build dios, restore toys or create your own custom toys then the ATM is the place for you. We will be offering physical and online education on diorama construction, custom building, and restoration so you too can build your own little piece of the ATM someday.
So if you miss your toys...love your toys...want to display your toys..., then you as soon as you enter you will be saying...
I HAD THAT! (Our catchphrase)
MY MOM GAVE THAT AWAY!
MY BROTHER STOLE THAT FROM ME!
I SOLD THAT IN GARAGE SALE!!
Those are the phrases which are most often said when people see what we have to share. Who knows, we might even have one of your old toys!?
The best part of the ATM is that the collection already exists! Our collection consists of toys, comics, and games primary from the golden age of toys which ran from the 1960's to early 90's, however we also have toys as old as the early 1900's. The collection includes some of the most popular toys of all time, from Barbie and Gi joe to My little Pony and Transformers. Our alliance of collectors will also keep the museum interesting as collections rotate in and fresh new dioramas are created to delight our members.
The ATM will feature many rare and unique items including prototypes of action figures that will help educate the public on the toy creation process. Many of these unique toys will be displayed from private collections or are acquired directly from some of the people who used to work for the great toy companies. Not only will the ATM feature action figures, dolls and linked merchandise to all the franchises, but it will also feature over 50 video game systems all the way back to the first home console unit. These video game systems will also be available to play!!! If you love arcade games from the 80's you will be please to know that the museum will feature some of the most popular original arcade games of all time, including Dragons Lair, Space Invaders, Ms. Pacman, Missile Command, Centipede, Asteroids, Q-Bert, Donkey Kong, and Pole Position.
We will also have your favorite board games and comic books. Some of our favorites are X-Men #1 and Amazing Fantasy #15 (First Spider-Man appearance).
We have the people, the passion, the collections and now we need your help to get our location ready for your first visit.
Help us make your ATM a fun destination for families and all toy lovers to enjoy.
Without your help these collections will continue to sit in attics, garages, storage units or perhaps sold off and lost. With your help we will bring an amazing toy collection right here to beautiful and weird Austin, Texas. Just like all cool Austenites, we love to give and share so you will be rewarded for every bit you give, not only from our reward levels, but also from taking part in the creation of what could be the coolest museum in the world! Thanks for looking and we look forward to seeing you all at the museum!
Risks and challenges
The risks: ATM has the toys but the space to display them is the first huge obstacle. Finding the perfect venue for ATM which allows us to accomplish the displaying of the toys, creating a consistent revenue source from traffic flow and events is the main key factor at the beginning, as well as the managing of operations. Like most start up opportunities, how the initial set up goes can make or break it in the following years. With a completely funded Kickstarters, ATM believes this will be enough to cover all start up costs which will help keep ATM financially stable from the very beginning.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
