About this project
PRE-ORDER AND SUPPORT SHOCK AND AWE
A ten-year, autobiographical project examining the relationship between protracted war and homeland decay, Shock and Awe is a meticulously crafted image, text, and found object journal that blurs the line between author and subject, and personal and authoritative histories.
This Kickstarter campaign is primarily intended to serve as a pre-order for the book, an exquisite 1st edition of 1,000 copies that will reproduce the look and feel of the original hand-made journal. Bound in a canvas cover with a leather strap and matching impressed lettering, and utilizing archival heavy weight paper and printing methods, this edition far exceeds the possibilities available through traditional publishing avenues. Somewhere between the Artists' Books tradition and the high-end photographic monograph, these books will maintain the integrity of both the content and form of the original.
These books are heavily discounted for the purpose of raising necessary capital, and also for acknowledging early, much needed support. The financial hurdle and immense time needed to produce a factory-direct edition is formidable. I thank you for your time, and for your early assistance in helping to bring this project to the public.
I began working on this project ten years ago, though I didn't know it for the first five. Profoundly affected by the events of September 11th, and still deep in shock as we began our invasion of Afghanistan, I unknowingly stopped shooting skate videos and began documenting the up-turned social landscape of my North Jersey world. Out of reflex and a need to cope, I became a photographer, and soon found myself traversing the country, to document, collect, and preserve. Unbeknownst to me, this project was born.
Years later, after photographing war and losing several friends to it, I rediscovered this early archive. It held acute personal significance, as it held the remains of my youth; however, I also felt it provided an early view of the national moral and corporeal collapse that loomed around me. I re-opened this project full time, revisiting the country I had once known, hoping to tell what was then the unheard story of an exhausted American homeland drained by its relationship with war.
After a couple of years, the world caught up. The toll of the homeland became the doublespeak of politicians and headlines, and I watched as the noise of the "recession story," diluted and stripped of larger and longer standing causes, drowned out a trauma that, like my subjects, I too could no longer escape.
My subjects are as much a reflection of myself as they are products of this time. But, I too am a product of this time, and it has been my primary task with this project to reclaim my story from the fog that is the last decade. Ultimately, this work is autobiographical and it is my hope that, in my search, you see yourself, too.
HOW THE MONEY WORKS / WHAT HAPPENS NEXT
>>UPDATE: WE HIT 100% What NOW? <<
ALL MONEY UP TO 25,000 WILL GO DIRECTLY TO THE BOOK PRODUCTION: MATERIALS, PROCESSES, AND SHIPPING.
Originally, it was my plan to cap the spending on the book and to use additional funding past the kickstarter goal to support the creation of a traveling exhibition, and to help finance a tour for the book+exhibition. I have slightly modified this plan.
ALL MONEY RAISED THROUGH 25,000 will be used directly toward the book itself, first to improve on the materials and production, second to improve shipping speed. I want to make this edition as exceptional as possible; I will be using all resources from kickstarter (and most likely beyond this platform) to achieve this.
Book sales of the first edition will be used to fund the creation of the traveling exhibition and to carry the books+exhibition around the country. This will also allow for a third chapter to be produced.
I currently have noted bookstores in New York City and San Francisco ready to sell the book (If you know great bookstores elsewhere, please be in touch). I have preliminary arrangements with several DIY spaces and galleries throughout the country interested to host the books and traveling exhibition (I'd love to know more). It is my hope for this work to return to as many of the communities that have participated in it's creation as possible.
THANK YOU COMMUNITY!
