Our family purchased a small farm in northwest Minnesota last year and have been experimenting with the most cost-effective and sustainable manner to grow orchards, vineyards, and vegetables. 

Despite the drought this year, the growing season has been productive, but we want to grow vegetables year round or nearly year round in a more controlled environment. Aside from providing food "out of season", growing allows increased yield with the same amount of land. And with the population being what it is, increased yields are vital to improving the overall food supply.

We also want to document how someone who is fairly handy with tools would be able to build a steel frame solar hoophouse. This will include pictures and videos where possible, as well as explanations. 

(We do plan to build and document a geodesic dome in the future, and compare yields, but that is a project for next season!)

For the more tech savvy, we want to demonstrate how we build computer monitoring and automation systems to limit the electrical, water, and labor resources required to operate a small greenhouse. Automation in this manner can people who work full-time in urban environments manage their own greenhouse (thus reducing the cost of travel, and allowing them to know what they eat), and especially may help where water is scarce. For us, it's great because farm labor is scarce here in the northern part of the US and is anyway not cost-effective for a project of this scale. Plus, it's great to be able to work your own greenhouses.

So yes, it's a small project with big ideas! But we think it's ideas like these that can make a huge difference!

Risks and challenges

The project itself is relatively risk free--it's really a matter of completing it before winter, and documenting the construction and automation tasks. Between the three of us, we have the construction expertise to build it, we have the equipment to document the information and host it online, and Michael has the necessary skills to develop the website and program the automation functionality.

Once the project is funded, we really will just need to get the project done before winter so that we can focus on the documentation and automation features.
