6 years ago I took a small amount of money I'd received from a recent redundancy and with a lot of hard work we made a success of Flat Caps Coffee. Not only do we have a great little coffee shop we have a reputation that spans the UK and maybe even the rest of the world for serving great coffee.
Its now time to grow and offer more from our service. Our current location has its pros and cons. We're in a very secretive little hide away that once you know about it you can sneak away from the rest of the world for a delicious coffee. However we don't have control of our own opening hours which means we can't offer the full range of services that we'd like mainly training facilities.
We'd like to expand and open a second shop, serving up coffee in our own unique way that we have learned over the years with the added service of earlier and later opening times while also offering superb training facilities.
This is one step in a much larger plan to help put Newcastle on the map in the coffee world. We've already got some great establishments but I think its time now that we started really showing the rest of the UK what we're made of up here in the North.
Risks and challenges
The success of Flat Caps Coffee has been heavily reliant on myself, Joe, being the life and soul of the business. By growing I will need to learn the skill of passing on my knowledge and passion on to staff who have a real willingness to be the best.
I relish this challenge, already training baristas to a very high standard. I think, if anything, having a range of styles, attitudes and personalities will strengthen the Flat Caps brand for quality.
Running a business always has its risks but I've learned from the ground up by starting my business from scratch by myself. I am now confident that if we can achieve the backing of our customers to open our second store we will make a success of that shop too. It won't be easy but one thing I'm not scared of is hard work, we will make it happen.
