In September of 2012 I was fortunate enough to be chosen in my Junior year to show a mini Resort 2013 collection as part of Mercedes Benz Fashion Week at Lincoln Center. Fast forward 5 weeks & now I am a Senior and have the chance to show in this show again next year (September 2013). What I'm asking for is your help in funding this collection as I do not have the personal resources to create a collection that is as professional & precise as my personal ethic dictates & the real world requires.
As a curious child I always used to take things apart just to see how they were made, so I suppose it would be fair to say that my fascination for construction began nearly from birth. I did not know exactly what I wanted to do with my lifelong curiosity until I left high school & entered Liberty University as an undeclared major. By happenstance, I ended up in a sewing class & realized that there was indeed a path that would allow me to exploit the skill set in sewing passed down from my mother & meld that with my innate curiosity that had been dogging me my entire life... that path was called "Fashion". I had truly found what would soon become my passion.
Always a self starter, I soon taught myself how to make accessories (I viewed it as an exercise in geometry) & it wasn't long until I moved on to garments (soft geometry if you will...). I simply couldn't get enough. Soon I enrolled in the Fashion Design program at The Art Institute of New York City, where I remain today... only 2 months from graduation... yikes!!!
From the moment I was enrolled @ AINYC, I buried myself in my studies & anxiously got involved in everything that I could to satisfy my thirst for the new found, glamourous world in which I was now living & breathing daily. My first professional affiliation was with Williamson PR & Showroom where I got to work on presenting collections during Fashion Week in February of 2012. Inside AINYC, I was honored to be hired as a student tutor in only my 3rd quarter. Next came an internship at Jon Ashe Menswear which lasted a full 6 months. Most recently, I was able to learn the other side of the industry during an internship with TheFashionList where I tracked the Fashion Week schedules of London, Paris, Milan & New York & researched background information for the events that would be used to aid the writing staff in preparing their 300+ reviews for the Fashion Week cycle. I also worked on the social media aspects of TheFashionList & am proud to say, have recently been asked to work with them yet another season. All of this while staying on top of my grades & class work... whew!
As I mentioned earlier, I showed last month at Lincoln Center, and I want to give you, my potential investors, a glimpse at my runway looks. This collection was about the dichotomy of ease meeting structure. I wanted to force the two together with the hopeful result being a relaxed but strong silhouette with the goal being a Resort collection that could be described as effortless. Leather meets Chiffon, Micro Twill meets High-Tech Denim... all accented with Silver Bead Chain that draped around the models' forms with fluid sophistication while adding a dramatic, yet subtle interest as the pieces walked under the white hot lights of the runway. I wanted the collection to be as embody the ease of a well deserved resort respite & I hope you will agree by looking at the pieces below, that I achieved my goal.
What You Are Funding
I am entitling this collection: Università (Italian for Varsity). I have designed it as the embodiment of the casual, carefree life of the collegiate co-ed meeting the streamlined uniformity of office wear. These are the pieces you wear because you can... not because you have to. The injection of Italian sophistication gives the traditional American Sportswear concept a punch of refinement with the result being my Fall 2013 Collection. I plan on making a 9 to 10 outfit Men's & Women's collection so that my vision will know no gender boundaries & allow it to flourish to its fullest potential. My vision of my future is a full lifestyle brand that counts both sexes as customers & reaches out to all categories, including clothing, accessories, scents, & the like. I hope you will join me at this early stage to make this, my first meaningful step in the direction of my larger whole a reality.
Please help me as I continue my journey as a student and aspiring designer wIth the chance to show at Mercedes Benz Fashion Week at Lincoln Center in September of 2013. I would like to thank everyone in advance for your time & kind consideration.
Risks and challenges
One of the risks or challenges that I have regarding this project is finishing on time for my presentation in December. I am creating this collection with two great risks, the first being failing my senior collection class, and the second being ineligible to show at Mercedes Benz New York Fashion Week 2013.
The requirement for our class is three garments, I am making eighteen, at the very least. There is a slight chance that I amy not be able to accomplish all of this, but I have every confidence that I can, if not more.
In all honesty the largest problem that may abstain me from succeeding is affording all of the fabrics, trimming, and finishing required to complete a collection of this caliber. I hope to have your help in that final concern.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
