A new deck of premium playing cards inspired by Fabergé Eggs and Imperial Russia.
ABOUT THE IMPERIAL DECK:
The inspiration for the Imperial Deck derives from the beautiful Imperial Eggs created by the House of Fabergé from the late 1800's to early 1900's. With the goal to create my own unique Egg designs, I decided on different styles for each of the four suits found in a Deck of Playing Cards.
The DIAMOND Eggs all have a Nature/Fantasy/Elfish vibe. The CLUBS are inspired by Greek mosaics, colors and geometric shapes. The Russian Double-Headed Eagle is the focal point for the HEARTS and RED Back Eggs. They also draw inspiration from Ancient Rome. And lastly, the SPADES and BLACK Back Eggs all have a Baroque/Gothic look and feel.
To differentiate the hierarchy of Cards, the JACKS are the "Warrior" Eggs within each suit. The QUEENS are simple, elegant and use light colors. The KINGS are the most decorative and ornate of the Court Eggs. Also, each of the KING Eggs contains a "Crown" at the top.
All of the Eggs, Ace Heroes, PIPS and Border elements are 3d Models I built in Lightwave 3d on a Mac. Each of the 3d elements were Rendered out at Hi Res and went through varying levels of compositing in Photoshop and integrated into the Card designs.

MY DESIGN BACKGROUND:
I have been in the design field since 1995 and work during the day as the Senior Designer with Motive Marketing. My previous Playing Card designs include the ORNATES, the Blue Crown Luxury Deck and the United Cardists Deck.
The Midnight Cards Facebook page contains up-to-date info on my Card designs.
The Imperial's Custom PIPS are made to resemble buttons made of Enamel and bordered with Gold. Each of the Aces contain a Gold "Surprise" element, similar to what a real Imperial Egg would have included within. The "Surprise" elements represent important Buildings (Spade, Club) and Symbols (Heart, Diamond) from Imperial Russia.
RED IMPERIAL DECK:
The RED version of the Imperial Deck is the main version and is how I envisioned the Back Card and Tuck Box in the very early brainstorming stages. The background graphics have an appearance of engraved Red Enamel and the Tuck Box will feature a GOLD FOIL Interior.
BLACK IMPERIAL DECK:
The BLACK Bicycle version of the Imperial Deck has been created solely for this Kickstarter campaign and will not be available after the project is over. The BLACK version will also feature a GOLD FOIL Interior within the Tuck Box.
RED IMPERIAL 6-PACK BOX:
The RED custom 6-Pack Box comes with SIX (6) RED versions of the Imperial Deck and is printed on 24 pt. Stock (thicker than USPCC brick boxes). Each Box will be hand-signed on the Top Flap. The Top Panel is Scored and Diecut to allow the Top to fold into a Display Header.
BLACK IMPERIAL 6-PACK BOX:
The BLACK custom 6-Pack Box is a Kickstarter Exclusive item and comes with SIX (6) BLACK Bicycle versions of the Imperial Deck. Each Box will be hand-signed on the Top Flap and printed on 24 pt. Stock. The Top Panel is Scored and Diecut to allow the Top to fold into a Display Header.
COLLECTORS ART BOOK:
The 20-Page Collectors Art Book is the perfect companion piece for the Imperial Deck. The Cover Spread will be printed on 14 pt. Gloss Cover Stock and the Inside Spreads will be printed on 100 lb. Gloss Book with Aqueous Coating. The Book is sized at 8.5"w x 5.5"h to let the small details of each Egg really shine through!
A Lo Res PDF version of the Collectors Art Book can be found HERE.
Like the BLACK Bicycle Deck, the Collectors Art Book is a Kickstarter Exclusive item that will not be available after the project is over. Each Book will be hand-signed and dated under the Artist's Note section on the Inside Cover.
IMPERIAL 2" COIN:
The IMPERIAL 2" Coin will have an Antique Gold Finish and the design will have a Three-Dimensional curve to the shapes, not the usual straight-edged Bevel. Here's a conceptual Mockup of the IMPERIAL Coin. The photos below are some examples of finished Coins from the manufacturer we will use.
3D PRINTED EGGS:
3D Printing is a fascinating technology that has really advanced in recent years. Using a company called Shapeways, we are offering two unique 3D Printed pieces using 3D Models from the IMPERIAL Deck. The first is the King of Spades Egg on an Egg Stand. It will measure 1.7"w x 2.7"h x 1.7"d and can be printed in a number of great materials. The second is a 2-Headed Eagle Necklace Pendant Egg that will measure .9"w x 1.5"h x .9"d. The House of Fabergé produced numerous small Pendant Eggs alongside the creation of the Imperial Eggs. Our 3D Eggs will make the perfect gift for the Holidays! They will ship out separately, and sooner, than the rest of the rewards, as they are on-demand printing. If you are interested in a 3D Egg Add-On, please send us a PM with the details on which Egg and material you would like. To learn more about 3D Printing, check out these Videos from the manufacturer. A look at the available Materials can be found HERE.

The RED and BLACK Uncut Sheets are USPCC standard 22"w x 26"h and are Uncut versions of their respective Decks. The differences between the Uncuts will be the Back Designs and the Gaff Cards. The RED Gaff Card is a homage to the very first Imperial Egg, The Hen Egg. The BLACK Gaff Card will be VOTED on by Backers sometime during the project's duration.
The Uncut Sheets are only available as items added to your Pledge Reward base level. Extra Decks, the Art Book, Coin and/or extra 6-Pack Boxes are also available as Add-On items. To add any extra items to you Pledge, just click on the Blue "MANAGE YOUR PLEDGE" Button and change your dollar amount to account for the added item(s).
Risks and challenges Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
The key risks in this project are timely printing and delivery by the makers - The U.S. Playing Card Company. I have created decks in the past that were printed by USPC, and while there can be occasional delays, they usually are able to print and deliver a deck consistently in their estimated time frame of 6-8 weeks from when a print run is initiated.
All of the Designs, including our Stretch Goals, are 100% finished and ready for Production. No bottleneck waiting for the designs to be completed!
For delivery, I have teamed up with House of Playing Cards, the producers and distributors of my ORNATE series of playing cards. HOPC has lots of experience with producing and shipping thousands of decks of cards in a safe and timely manner.
Thanks to my great relationship and past experience with HOPC, and their direct line of contact with USPC, any stumbling blocks should be very minor and we are all committed to overcoming any potential production problems quickly and efficiently!
