Docu-series that chronicles the challenges of launching 4 creative projects, serves as “how-to” tool for entrepreneurs + creatives

Thanks for taking the time to check out LAUNCH.

LAUNCH is a wildly entertaining “how-to” reality show, currently raising money on Kickstarter to create jobs, “launch” the careers of local, talented people and inspire a nation.

GOAL: To create as many employment opportunities as possible and inspire a movement of creative people with a vision to go after it. Launch tests the theory that anyone can find a place to start, even in this economy. 

HOW: Launch will “launch” four independent projects in just 10 months, capture each step of the process for the world to see, and employ as many people along the way as possible.

RESULT: A docu-series that chronicles the trials and tribulations a cast and their Boston-based cohorts find in launching creative projects and ultimately making self-sustaining businesses out of four creative people’s talents. A show that will hopefully inspire a movement of entrepreneurs and DIY’er to create their own career path and find their own niche. A project that will put a small local production team to work for 10 months.

WHY KICKSTARTER? Although the creators have been approached by major networks (3, actually), it was important to maintain the integrity of the “everyone can find a place to start” mantra by pursuing an independent launch. The goal is to inspire people to take big chances. By using Kickstarter, we hope to lead by example and demonstrate that everyone CAN realize their dreams with some hard work, humility, and a little help from the good folks that comprise the Kickstarter Nation.  


FUNDING:

If $150,000 is fully funded on Kickstarter by April 6th, LAUNCH will be able to employ 20 people to create an informative and entertaining, 12-part, docu-series highlighting several of our New England creatives. The number of employees connected to the projects the show will be covering is estimated to double by 2014. 

The Kickstarter will be responsible for 100% of the show’s funding. There are no other investors or grants associated with the project. This will be a yearlong project with many people responsible for its content and success. All contributions will be applied directly to the production (set, cameras, lighting, sound, scoring, etc.) travel expenses for a minimum of 10 cast and crew for multiple city shoots and scheduled interviews, insurances and other CYA (legal), supplemental crew, necessary permits and permissions and a whole boatload of other anticipated expenses too numerous to list. The creators of the show will not be employed with the funding. 

Everyone involved in the creation of the series encompasses the point of the show. The filmmakers are talented young men from New England pursuing their dreams on the side while moonlighting as a bartender at Joe’s on Newbury and a construction worker. 

LAUNCH is on a mission to personally take responsibility for the current unemployment “predicament” and contribute to getting our economy back on track, one small business at a time. LAUNCH hopes to create positive change in the Commonwealth by educating a nation of creative people trying to launch their careers and love what they do.   


LAUNCH | THE SYNOPSIS

LAUNCH is the story of ordinary people taking extraordinary chances. On camera. Shamelessly. A self-proclaimed "sucker" for people with passion and big dreams, Christina Contardo, 40, a Boston-based entertainment attorney, and Kristen Mallia, 32, a freelance graphic designer living in Brighton, Mass., have decided to let a film crew capture their quest to help produce four projects and ultimately make self-sustaining businesses out of four creative people's talents. The result is a real, unscripted docu-series highlighting the day-to-day situations in which they find themselves. Whether trying to launch the career of a recording artist, grappling over swatches for clients with no budget, or having one too many cocktails at the afternoon meeting, this oft-funny, sometimes ridiculous, always educational series will give viewers a raw glimpse into the struggles of the business newbie, the absurdities of “making it work,” and the triumphs and mishaps of dreaming bigger than you dare.

CHRISTINA CONTARDO: Boston-Based Entertainment Attorney 
Skillset: Provides an infinite well of inspiration and guidance, wears the same outfit every day.

KRISTEN MALLIA: Boston-Based Graphic Designer Skillset: Enthusiasm (fire), loud-talking, non-commercial creativity that actually works, awkward dance maneuvers.

JENNIFER GLICKMAN: Boston-Based Interior Designer
Skillset: Style, smiling, teamwork, passion, makin’ tall, Asian, Jewish, and Southern WERQ.

JESSE GALKOWSKI: Boston-Based Boy-Man
Skillset: Coffee retrieval, music and video production, and surfer-style ingenuity. Rounding out a nearly (and totally unintentional) all female cast.

THE START OF SOMETHING BADASS

LAUNCH, unlike so much of contemporary reality programming, will be rich in CONTENT. Aside from the unbelievable potential for some genuinely entertaining television, these ambitious Bostonians possess the mettle to see these projects through to fruition. With a couple of eager (and staggeringly talented) production boys in tow, LAUNCH will capture the ever-fascinating ups and downs that will inevitably unfold before the ever-present camera lens.

The drive behind this series is simple: POSITIVE IMPACT. The result will be a docu-series that: (1) Shows that regular people can find a place to start. (2) Documents regular people overcoming the ever-present human fear of catastrophic failure. (3) Inspires forward momentum in the lives of those with grand ideas, but who aren’t quite sure where to start.

CONTENT: Behind-the-scenes look at brand development, thinktanks, music video production, new-age marketing, music festival culture and operations, music recording, successes and failures in new businesses, interviews with notable people (keep checking back during funding and after for our list of accomplished people who dig our project enough to let us talk to them on camera).

WHEN: It’s imperative that we capture the beginning stages of the projects featured on the show, so we will need to start shooting no later than March 1, 2013, culminating with an EDM festival currently booked for the Lakes Region Casino in Belmont, NH, in August 2013. Each episode will be edited as we go with an aim to complete all post-production by December 2013.

WHERE: The set (our LAUNCHpad, if you will) will be based in Boston, MA. Boston is the perfect landscape for this project - small enough to cultivate intimate relationships with the community while maintaining big city buzz. Location shooting is scheduled for NYC, Belmont and Laconia NH, and Charlton, MA. Additional locations TBD by total funds raised, interviewees and locations.

FUNDING GOALS:

$150,000 (Minimal Goal) will yield 12 commercially viable episodes of LAUNCH. We understand this looks like a huge number but in reality, its only $15,000 per month for 10+ people to work tirelessly 7 days a week for 10 months. We know we can complete the first season of LAUNCH with our base budget. It will be tight, but it can be done.

$500,000 will enable us to add episodes, increase travel budget and secure one set (The LAUNCHPAD) for the entire year, making shooting and logistics far more efficient. Additionally, this funding will increase the equipment budget, allowing for more crew. You get the picture: More money=more jobs=the whole damn point. 

 $1,000,000 + The “Are You Kidding Us” Budget will allow us to not only bring on additional crew, but most importantly allow us to transform the footage into a full-length documentary film. $ 2,000,000 + The “We Have No Words” Budget We’ll start production discussions for Season 2 and in the essence of the show, we’ll pay forward some of our budget surplus to a few other Kickstarters who could use help reaching their minimum goal.

Solution: Since there is already some network interest, we plan to spend the 10 months in production cultivating the relationships we’ve already established to seek guidance to move forward in this area. We're confident we have a credible network to lean on.
