Loss is hard. Loss of a pregnancy or infant can be especially so. We’ve been there, and we wanted to express our thoughts and feelings about this experience in one of our favorite book formats.
So… we’ve created our first two board books - Rainbow: A Little Book About Loss and What Can Come Next and Sunshine: A Little Book About Loss and What Came Before. We’re happy with them, and hope that you will be, too.
Rainbow might bring some comfort to grieving grown-ups (with rainbow babies on the way or still waiting). It is also designed to begin to explain loss to rainbow babies themselves, at the right time. Sunshine is meant to help start a conversation with children who are experiencing the effects of pregnancy loss in the family, even though they may not yet be entirely aware of the reason for all of the big feelings.
We believe that reading and talking about life’s big moments is important. We believe in the value of learning and growing together, and invite you to join us. Let’s do this; let’s launch Brainchild Publishing. It’s a positive pursuit… for the children and adults in all of us.
Rainbow and Sunshine (two similar books with different titles and endings) have already been completely written, illustrated, and designed. With your help ($9,500), we can get them off of the computer, into the real world, and snugly into the hands of parents and children—together or separately. We will use your contributions toward printing and shipping. Eventually, we aim to become not just self-sustaining, but able to donate copies, perhaps in a buy one/give one manner. If these books find a following, it will allow larger runs to be printed—and the price per copy will hopefully come down.
We recognize that rewards are an important aspect of Kickstarter campaigns. We’re excited to be able to send you some fabulous goodies when you make a donation—as listed here on the project page.
Because we have so many ideas (and several other books near completion), we have a stretch goal. With an additional ($16,500), we will be able to print and ship the following titles as well, any of which might make an excellent shower gift for someone that you know and love:
- Yo, Mama: A Little Book about Pregnancy
- Work It: A Little Book about Labor and Delivery*
- Welcome, Wee One: A Little Book to Say Hello
- Daddy Dear: A Little Book about Modern Fathers
*This one also addresses birth via C-section, when it comes as an unplanned event.
As far as timing, we’re ready to send Rainbow and Sunshine off to our US-based printer as soon as the campaign closes. If we reach our stretch goal, we’re committed to having the additional books ready to print within six weeks. Our high quality, small batch printing company typically aspires to an eight-week turnaround, and shipping the finished books to us will be quick, relative to offshore production. This means that we conservatively anticipate rewards shipping by mid-July!**

We love working together, and this venture allows us to use our prior personal and professional skills in a new way.
Kylie studied art, design, and psychology and has worked in the fields of experience design, research, and product management for the past ten years. She has always loved rainbow colors and getting her hands literally and figuratively messy with projects.
Shauna spent almost forty years in the field of education - concentrating largely on literacy, art, and the healthy development of children and relationships, in and out of the classroom. You can find her blog at www.pieintheskypoetry.com, a nice place for a closet introvert to shine.
Thank you so much for your consideration and support. We look forward to finding out what we can do together.
Risks and challenges
These are our first books, so there is a little inherent risk. However, we have already completed Rainbow and Sunshine's layouts, have been in communication with the printer about their production, and feel confident about our ability to deliver on time. If we make our stretch goal, we will finish the remaining two books' illustrations in short order and get all six titles printed ASAP! Our goal in that case would be to ship the four additional books at the same time as Rainbow and Sunshine, but there is a slight chance that they will ship a little later.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
