The Hex Terrain Toolkit is a set of configurable laser-cut jigs designed for making beautiful interlocking modular hexes from expanded polystyrene. Ideal for RPGs and wargames, you won’t find a more versatile modular system for natural terrain anywhere in the world.
****Higher reward levels include all the functionality of lower reward levels. Please see the following video for full details.****
The Hex Terrain toolkit consists of a wide array of tools and braces, many of which can be configured in multiple ways. The braces hold the tools in position; the tools give a true guide for your hot wire cutter. Each reward level adds additional pieces to the toolkit:
Hexes you can make with each reward level
Super Pro Maker [UNLOCKED]A new top reward level which lets you cut simpler interlock pieces for the middle of your boards (where the more complicated cog shape isn't needed). It also lets you eject finished slope and cliff pieces without dismantling the tool. All to help you make your hexes faster.
Trench Maker add-on [UNLOCKED]
An extra straight river base tool which will allow you to make straight canals with vertical sides. It’ll also allow you to cut trenches of multiple widths: 25mm and wider. If you have the Hill Maker or River Maker reward, you’ll be able to make trenches of 7.5mm or 15mm depth; if you have the Cliff Maker reward or better, you’ll be able to make depths of any multiple of 7.5mm, right up to 75mm, so you can make them the right size for any scale of miniature from 6mm and up. Maximum of 1 per backer (contact me if you would like to order more than that). Cost: £2.
Basic Hex Tool add-on [UNLOCKED]
An extra pair of basic hex tools so you can get your minions to make hexes for you whilst you do the interesting bits. £5 with bolts and wingnuts included (maximum of 1 per backer) or £4 without (maximum of 2 per backer). If you want more than this, please contact me to check the shipping costs.
To include any add-ons, just increase your total pledge by the appropriate amount. I’ll check which add-ons you want in a post-Kickstarter survey.

Risks and challenges
I have tested every tool in the hex terrain toolkit, refining the design over many iterations. That's really eliminated any risk that the design won't work, because I've used it myself and have made the terrain to prove it.
Where there will be a challenge is in the manufacturing tolerance of the materials. The toolkit is laser cut from 3mm MDF, which has a manufacturer's tolerance of ±0.2mm in thickness. This kind of variance is from sheet to sheet, rather than within a single sheet and the cutting pattern will need to take this into account to ensure that the tools slot together easily, but with a firm fit.
I have kept full records of my construction calculations and have diagrams to enable me to re-create the toolkit with altered slot sizes. I have done this previously during the design process and am confident it would not present a problem.
I have obtained quotes from a number of laser cutting shops in the UK and factored the costs of manufacture into the pricing of the rewards. There should not be many risks here. If the Kickstarter target is significantly exceeded, there should not be a problem in scaling up production.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
