About

The Goal:

Provide one place with good solid dependable information. So that, someone can design, build, or buy a good safe multipurpose survival shelter for there family. Including interviews with experts and weaponeers.

Please make a Pledge to get this information.

Engineered To Survive, is the definitive in-depth Documentary Film and eBook Series of a multipurpose Nuclear, Biological, Chemical, emp (NBC) Blast Shelter. Often referred to as a fallout shelter, bomb shelter, or a bunker, but there are crucial differences.

With subjects covering but not limited to: Interviews, design, engineering, construction, installation, operation, troubleshooting, inspectors, food, water, evacuation transportation, and every thorough detail in-between. A massive bank of quality information saving people tons of time, money, and life. Nowhere else is there this level and quantity of dependable information in one place.

About 15 years ago, I first started researching fallout shelters. Every year there is less quality information and knowledge on this subject, as it is becoming extinct. Ten years ago, there was substantially more information on the Internet than there is today. The experts and weaponeers themselves ARE dying from old age. The knowledge that these people possess is going undocumented and lost, in a magnitude of different ways. Servers get shutdown and deleted all the time, taking its data with it. This knowledge must be Documented, Preserved, Archived, and Distributed. There is no one today at any of the national laboratories whom have ever seen a nuclear explosion.

For added thoroughness, I will be locked inside the shelter alone to live for 30 days documenting every moment of it. During the lock-in, there will be systems that have been sabotaged by a few other people and I will have to troubleshoot and repair. I will not know what has been sabotaged, and I will not have any outside help. The saboteurs will be a electrician, plumber, mechanic, and a generator technician. There will also be a second lock-in with a second person, same as above.

A good Read, A declassified Document on Nuclear Weapons

Also another good read, Guidelines for Environmental Infection Control in Health -Care Facilities

Lots of nice photos about half way down the page, just for an idea only.

Most all shelters online are a danger. If the manufacturer does not list the shelter’s designed Overpressure PSI rating and the TRS (Total Rems in Shelter) rating, Do Not Buy. So many have improper air filtration, inappropriate material choices though bad entry geometry. Improper entranceway design will allow an unsafe dose of radiation into the shelter at 1-psi and lethal at 20-psi. The air filtration systems are missing important stages, including the most critical for Biological. Most air filtration systems do not have adequate TEDA carbon for Chemical and Radiological filtration.

Glass inside the shelter will shatter and become shrapnel from the ground shock.  Psychologically, It is important to have a non-glass mirror (mirror is one aspect) inside the shelter to provide a sense of normalcy from the sudden change in lifestyle. Also, to help prevent or reduce Shelter Shock syndrome.

To prevent injuries and protect the occupants from ground shock, a shelter must have seat belts or some form of isolation/damping.

A standby generator or a generator from a hardware store is a deadly choice. To name one of many. There are many types and classes of generators. A generator must have a continuous power rating or prime power rating. What is the designed MTBF (mean time between failures). Never use gasoline anything. Diesel vs Propane. Lots more covered.

Mechanical is much better than electronic.

Different Shelter Names:

  • Bunker: Is not designed for nuclear. If equipped with proper air filtration, could provide an increased probability of survival in minimal fallout area. Lowest rating, but better then aboveground.
  • Fallout Shelter: Is primarily designed to protect against gamma fallout. Rating of 0-1 psi. Must provide a minimum period of 30 days.
  • Bomb Shelter: Is primarily designed to protect against gamma fallout and few blast effects. Rating of 1-9 psi.
  • Blast Shelter: Is primarily designed to protect against fallout, blast effects, fires, ground shock, and overpressure. Rating 10-40 psi or more.

Price differences between shelter types is not that much.  All shelters sold online do not include the subsystems.  The subsystems are where the bulk of cost will be in a shelter.  Over all turn-key cost of two new trucks.

About the author:

I am a college graduate in electronics engineering and computer science. I am the type of person whom has taken classes in nanotechnology just for the fun and knowledge of it.

I have worked on two massive NBC shelter facilities, where I designed modifications for the air filtration system and life support systems for 1,500 souls (3,500 FOS).

A little back history:

About 15 years ago, I first started researching fallout shelters. Found several manufacturers, between them there designs were basically the same. So, back then. I thought and was lead to believe that; 8 feet packed earth cover and a 90 degree turn in the entrance, was all that was needed. Then all that was left to do, is to just go buy two cheap gasoline generators from a hardware store and a large fuel storage tank, food, water, and some entertainment. Then I would be all set. What I know now, I would be laying in the floor puking my guts out, dying a slow horrible death from radiation sickness (or chem/bio infiltration), because of the entrance/exit way and air pipes would allow extremely high radiation levels inside, among other reasons. Both generators would be broken; a hard lesson learned while my family was helping with the Hurricane Katrina clean up. Where each was buying at least one generator every week. But, the silver lining, without the generator or me to power the air filtration, I would die faster from co2 poisoning. Also gave no thought about how to evaluate after the 30 days. Now, I know better.

Risks and challenges

Film production is a challenge, that will be Solved.
Plan 'A' : Goto the local University of North Carolina School of the Arts and hire a Camera Operator, and someone better in front of the camera. Then a film editor from the University or a private professional to deliver finished professional films.

Federal Taxes and State Taxes along with Kickstarter fees are massively driving up the cost of the project that would not be imposed otherwise.

With proper design and planning risks are mitigated. There are some challenges that are in specialized fields and I will have to pay for those services.
