Hello once more friends! Jon and Ryan here again, live from 2014! It's been an interesting year so far. It's also been a cold year so far. We're no meteorologists, and we both frequently slept through our Weather and Climate classes, but we feel confident in declaring that a new ice age is upon us and we should probably start building a new society underground. Who's with us?! We understand if you can't express your agreement due to frostbitten fingers, so kindly just mash your face upon the keyboard.
So, what has January brought us so far? (By the way people, hang in there! There's pretty stuff near the bottom!)
Yes! We've got another loot update for you this month! As of right now, all but a small handful of the T-Shirts and Posters have been shipped. Most of you should be receiving your loot soon (or possibly already have), and the rest of them should be shipped within the next few days. We ran into a minor hiccup with signatures (since we're not currently living near each other, we had to do a bit of shipping back and forth), but it's about resolved now, so there should be little further delay!
By the way, we'd love to see pictures of your shirts and posters! Swing on by to the comments and show us, if you're not too shy!
As always, boxed copies will ship once we've got the game in ready-to-release form. The turn around on that will likely be a few weeks, but we've had people express that they'd rather get the boxes and NOT have to do a day-one update.
Hmmm... what else happened this month?
So, this month, we spent a bit more time on sorting out our distribution methods, both for getting you fine Kickstarter people your rewards, but also for selling the beast.
As of right now, we're still taking preorders with the Humble Widget. This also enables us to generate keycodes for distribution, so our best, simplest plan is to distribute these codes for you all to redeem through Humble. There's also the possibility of creating our own small-scale distribution method, but that would definitely take a bit more time to implement on our part. For this reason, we'd love to hear your input on this issue. As a note: this will be for PC, Mac, and Linux. This may be how we distribute android builds as well, but we still need to investigate this a bit more. We're still working out a strategy for distributing rewards for iOS if possible. Apple doesn't play ball too well with Kickstarter projects, but we'd love to try to sort something out for those that really want the iOS version.
Humble Widget - We will continue selling the game at CityQuestGame.com. When we release, the widgets will be converted from preorder to live.
Humble Store - You may or may not have noticed, but Humble recently released the Humble Store. We were in contact with them pretty quickly, and they've agreed to host us there. We're still not sure if this will be available on first release, but we hope so!
Desura - We've also been in contact with the fine folks at Desura, and they've also agreed to sell City Quest. We're reasonably sure this one should be available on launch, but the details still need to be sorted out.
GoG - This one is not for sure yet, but we've been in contact with Good Old Games as well. The conversation has been favorable so far: they seem to enjoy the classic feel and dark humor, but they need to play a near-complete build to agree for sure. We're confident they'll like what they play, but this is still not 100%.
Steam - As I'm sure you all know by now, we've been up on Steam Greenlight since we launched the kickstarter, and we're steadily inching closer to top 100. At this point, anything could happen here, but most likely one of two things will happen. First, by the time we release, Greenlight maymove to be a bit more open. This has been rumored almost since Greenlight opened, so it's completely unsubstantiated as far as we know, but it's a possibility.
The second possibility we see is that we'll regain traction there after we've released on other platforms/storefronts and people get a chance to play it. We'd still be plenty pleased with that outcome as well!
Now, friends, we come once more to the section for pretty things!
Hmm, let's see. This month lots of stuff happened down on the docks, let's go look at that!
Wooh. Well that was fun! How about these?
... and how about a few more NPCs? Some of these are backers, is one of them you?! Probably not, but look anyway!
Oh, also there's this:
Our composer's been busy lately! We've got some new music for you folks to check out now!
Some of this music is subject to change/update/revision, but for the most part, this is the music that will appear in-game!
City Quest Main Theme:
No longer will you have to endure Ryan's amateur composing! Give this a listen!
Next up is the first music you'll encounter in the game (outside of the main theme). We wanted something that would sufficiently represent boring airport/mall/elevator music, and I think we've got it here!
This was the most recent song dropped, coming in just last night! After the airport, you'll move into the slums (as those of you who've played the demo know!) For this one, we wanted something appropriately scummy and dingy, and we're quite pleased with the results! (Personally, Ryan feels it's very reminiscent of the Casino Night music from Sonic 2... though a bit toned down and less hopeful, which is as it should be down in Hooklyn.)
Lastly (at least for this update, there will be plenty more in the game) is the theme music for the downtown area. For this we wanted something hopeful, something that feels like coming to the big city. Despite our vague descriptions, Akash managed to come up with something great again! Have a listen:
Hello old friends, and here we are. You and us, on the last... wait a second, that was from Doctor Who. Sorry, lost ourselves for a moment there. Rather, here we are at the end of another update! We hope you had fun here today, we know we did. Once again, we'd love to see pictures of your T-Shirts and Posters when they arrive, so drop in and post them!
We'll see you next time!
