Loose Ends - Q&A

Hi there everyone, time for another update.
First off though, we have officially made our first stretch goal! German, Russian and one voted on language supported for release! (We will be sending a post kickstarter survey where everyone will be able to vote for the extra language.) Thanks so much for all of the extra pledging and helping to spread the word to get there.   

Our next stretch goal is only at $65k for the prologue chapter, so keep pushing and we can make it! 

Also, to make this a little easier, we will be extending the campaign through paypal after the kickstarter ends!! ((Which will be on our website as soon as we can.)) Any amounts raised there will go towards the stretch goal, so there is still a great chance we can reach it.  

Anyhow, onto the update!

Since we are nearing the end of the campaign, I thought it would be a great chance to answer some questions that have popped up. 

Q: How long will the game be?  

A: Judging the total game time in the final game is pretty difficult this early and without testing, but I can safely say the final game won’t be a short 2 hour experience or anything like that. In fact, even just the small pre-alpha demo took most people roughly 15-25 minutes to run through… and that was a tiny extra bit added before you even enter the “proper” more open world or have even gained your most basic skills.  

It takes a little time to tell the story and build the experience we want, so we plan to take all the time we need to do it right.

Q: And what is the replayability like?  

A: First off, I expect players to be able to play through the game several times on normal settings and still find it very rewarding. Since one of the biggest features is the ability to approach and handle situations differently, replaying the game and trying something new will definitely give you different experiences.

Beyond that though, we are planning a + mode (after you have beaten the game on normal, for an extra challenge), as well as some more involved ideas (such as the prologue chapter, or other ways to unlock additional content).

Added to all of this is a world filled with secrets and accomplishments…and you have quite a bit of content to keep people busy (as well as a game that might make quite a few completionists happy; what fun is achieving things if you aren't rewarded?).

Q: How does your character grow?

A: Well, the progression of your character depends on how you play and what type of person you are. Instead of more traditional “skill trees”, we like to approach abilities in a more grounded way and provide them through the actions you take (certain challenges, or exploration, or making certain choices).

Of course, there will also be a “core set” of abilities that are needed to make sure everyone is able to finish the game. But we see these more as key story events, instead of real individualistic character progression.

Outside of abilities, you also grow in terms of who you meet and the characters (or items) you have access to which help you on your journey.

Q: Plushy? What does it look like?

A: We are still working on prototyping the plushy, since we want to make sure it is something we can stand behind (well, not literally, it is only 9.5” tall :). 

Our next step is sorting our material and color issues (the ones we have now are simply placeholders, for example, the front is far too dark and the back needs better texture / color), but here is where we currently are to give you an idea of the direction we are headed.

Q: How big is the archival print? And what does it look like?

A: 18 x 24. These are high quality art prints on archival paper. The design still needs to be finished (which when I tackle, I’ll be working on openly and posting concepts or other designs that people can jump in and give feedback on). Keep an eye on our reddit for posts like these.

      @Stavros - lol, I knew I forgot something! :P

      Time doesn't move in terms of game time vs real time scale, instead it moves more in terms of game progression / story (kind of like in the demo, how it took place over several "days" ...but it only moved to the next day when you slept). That way when you finally make it out of the demo area, 5-7 days will have passed, which is just something that needed to happen in story terms to make sure things made sense :)

      Thank you for the update. It is good to have this info collected here. Searching through the comment section for answers is never practical.
      Though now I have a new question: how much time pressure will there be in the game? I like exploring and searching for hidden things, or just fooling around chasing butterflies. Sometimes games don't allow for that though because the world wont wait for you (darn realism). Have you decided how that will be for Bloom?

      Ohhh, I see! I have to admit I only read slightly more than what you posted here and didn't realise what it actually was doing with itself.

      Hand of Fate... That's actually a very clever title, considering how the game works.

      It's very cool sounding, and if I could afford to I'd totally chuck in for the alpha for the sole reason of getting the alpha(and beta) cards.

      As it stands I'll probably have to pass on this one.

      As cool as it and the star team they have sound, and it being an Aussie project(even if it IS Eastern states, it's still Aussie) I just can't.

      I backed the Location Cards decks, which is the same kind of thing, minus items(which is on the list of decks to be voted on for the next campaign) with a Character Deck thrown in, but a physical deck to shuffle and draw locations from.

      It has a deck for Urban and one for Rural and one for game-changing, region-defining stuff(half of which is Urban, half Rural, though some cards work in either setting). I got the tier that came with all four decks.

      So I can draw cards to create an entire region to play in, scatter some NPCs around, add any favourite/cool things I want to include and get playing just like in Hand of Fate. Minus the 3D imagery on a computer screen.

      Which I consider to be a plus! I have enough things that require a screen and something that lets me play an awesome game of endless replayability any time I want(or just draw out something for fun or for later) without needing a computer/laptop(or my phone) on hand is fantastic! :D

      Heh, I'm in on ROM but I've been a but on the fence in regards to Hand of Fate because I backed Chromancer. Which is *entirely* different but also involves cards.

      I guess I'll have another look, since it's an Aussie project, but I don't know if I can afford to chuck in for that as well.
