Pre-Alpha Engine Demo! Ready for Download!

Hey everyone, Dani here, time for our first update…the demo! First off though, thanks so much for all of the support. With your help we made it into staff-picks and are near the top of the games list on kickstarter! We still have a pretty long way to go though, so please keep spreading the word to everyone you can.

Anyhow, onto the demo!

Demo Link (for PC) -

NOTE:: For best results, use a gamepad! 16 direction support in a 2d RPG? You bet!

Over the last 6 months, James and I (mostly James :P) have been building this 2d engine from the ground up to handle the demands of Bloom. What we have now is only the first step forward. This is the solid foundation from which we can expand….so expect everything to get a lot better, with environmental effects, particles, improved AI, full sounds and much much more.

Still, we have included a sampling of various engine mechanics; such as base AI, puzzle scripting, dialog, and even a bit of combat.

Keep in mind though that this is still very early pre-alpha, so you might run into some rogue bugs and errors (and, of course, placeholder graphics). Please visit our help section on our website to see a list of bugs, and how you can handle them if you encounter any (such as pressing J if you get stuck).

Hopefully this early glimpse into the world gives you a sense of where we are headed and the possibilities as we continue. Enjoy!

And, again, thanks so so much for all of the support!

- Other Interesting KS Projects to Check Out -

In the spirit of Kickstarian love (is that a thing?) I thought it would be a good idea to point out some other KSers going on that might be worth a look.

Lords of Xulima -

A 2D isometric, turn-based Role-Playing Game with the depth and challenge of old-school classics and a modern, intuitive interface.

Apexicon -

A puzzle RPG with a focus on story, combat, and world-building. Gameplay influenced from Puzzle Quest, Scrabble, Bookworm Adventures. ((Also doing a Hyper Light Drifter Crossover!))

      tl;dr : Q = inventory item, E = interact.

Gamepad only adds 16 direction support - nothing more - and we are looking at a new control method that would give that to non gamepad players.

Personally tho - i find this sort of game far more enjoyable on a gamepad and would highly recommend it.

I am probably just missing something obvious, but I don't have a gamepad for my PC. Everything works fine and I found movement keys but I can't seem to figure out how to interact. Is there a key mapping somewhere I can look at? Or do I need to spring for a gamepad?

If WinXP support isn't possible in the short term, Ubuntu linux would do nicely...

I guess the demo is Windows only? You should say that instead of "PC" - Mac and Linux are PC platforms also.

Solved the first problem 8) Now it's complaining about d3d11.dll, which seems to be a DirectX issue.

    6. James Johnston on November 8, 2013

@Duskwind : just posted a new release the targets 4.0 instead of 4.5 - This should solve your problem.

    7. James Johnston on November 8, 2013

Just done a bit of research - the game is made using .net 4.5 - which it turns out means XP is not supported. I shall see if its possible to target 4.0 instead - which does work on XP.

I get "BloomCore.exe is not a valid win32 application" on XP.

I've just updated how we distribute the debug versions - and updated a debug revision. If you are getting problems now, download the debugging version - and extract it over the existing exe file. The new debug version will phone home if you crash with a bug report (we only log the errors, no ip etc). If your machine isnt directly connected, it also creates an 'errorlog.txt' file that you can email to me (email on the studiofawn site)
So if you are having issues, please run this new version - the more reports i get, the quicker i can fix up the errors :D

It is AMAZING - I love this backdrop <3

If anyone is having crashing issues, we are looking into it now. Should have that sorted out soon and then will upload a new version.

Glad you like it Gero! :) Just press J if you get stuck (this last week a new bug slipped in where you can get stuck on characters sometimes...and then today, we added the power of J haha).

The atmosphere in your pre-alpha (!) demo is already amazing, even though I got stuck twice while sparring ;-)

The general art style and the soundtrack are both beautiful. I'm really, really looking forward to further updates!
