Communique from Buenos Aires!
I have been in Buenos Aires almost a month now! My original return date was October 17th, but I have EXTENDED my stay here for an additional MONTH! One month was simply not enough time!
The city is vast and endlessly fascinating, it has the density of Manhattan spread over an area the size of los Angeles, it just goes and goes. A bit overwhelming, and it takes a while to settle in here. I have executed five paintings and three or four drawings and a bunch of "thumbnail sketches" that will serve as studies for studio paintings that i will paint small versions of here, perhaps, and-or larger versions when I return.
I have attended roughly 20 tango milongas in roughly 15 difernt venues, and have made sketches of the interiors of a few of them, thatcan be used as raw material for paintings. I have done four plein-air paintings and one in my "studio." The paintings are roughly 16X24" painted on linen that is masked off and taped to a foam board. I wll "stretch" these when I return. the paintings generallly required two or three sessions to complete.
The idea is to strecthand frame these paintings when i return (of course there will be, hopefully, many more of them produced in the next month) and then paint a few larger, more ambitious ones around which I can mount a show, exclusively of my Buenos Aires work. Realistically speaking (esepcially with the holidays upon us) the show will probably be in February.
I am also going to attend a "Fileteado" workshop with a master at this craft, Alfredo Genovese (you can find his work on the internet). That is planned for this week.
I will keep you posted on further developments!
